Selhurst 1968 my first away game.....brilliant for an 8 year kid, and then onto Highbury. The tube broke down mid tunnel and I was frightened we would miss the game......the place was heaving with Charlton that day.....I sat in the seats and was mesmerised by the Charlton fans fighting in the northbank, and afterwards as we walked away I swear my feet didnt touch the ground such was the size of the crowd.

Manure away was a very special day I took a coach full from West Kingsdown...Bristol for the skip antics afterwards and the brilliant photo someone posted of the crowd on here......Ipswich 6000 back in the eighties.....the 5000 at Wolves 76. Great memories. Also for an impressionable 14 yr old Chesterfield away circa 73/74...if you were there, youd know what I mean.

The people who dont give a shit about the FA Cup should reflect on the amount of first class memories it generates even if we are kak in it.

    Tel,

Chesterfield away, was that the one where the entire Charlton contigent ran across the length of the pitch to get into the home end and the police chasing us gave up?

Some great memories in this thread, think i have been to every one listed in the last 20 years.

    Standout ones for me:

    1. Ipswich Play Off - The atmosphere was electric. I remember the PA man before the match going round all four stands getting them to sing 'Singing the blues' and us drowning out all four of them with VFR

    2. Boro away in the cup. Yes, cheap travel was laid on, but to take 5,000+ for a midweek match the other end of the country was superb, and the backing that night was great. If only.

Though i wasn't there that night, i'm suprised Arsenal away at Highbury just after it was announced we were going back to the Valley hasn't been mentioned.

Man U and Bristol C in the cup were great for numbers, but atmosphere wise at both was pretty poor.

Arsenal in the cup 68/69 season. to a 11-year old it seemed like the whole crowd was Charlton. I was with my Dad and about 10 of his mates. I spent half the match looking at the thousands of Charlton fans in the NorthBank surrounded by disbelieving Arsenal hoolies. They estimated that there were 17,000 Charlton there in what was Arsenals biggest gate of that season.

Also Wolves in the cup 75/76ish. Gliksten refused to organize a special train as he said we could not fill it. He caved in after a fans protest, in the end we filled two trains and many fans went by scheduled trains as well. There was rumours of around a 100 coaches.

Yeah went to that one was a wonderful day never had seen so many charlton fans at an away game. didn't matter we lost had my flag wrapped around with pride.

Cov FA cup 2000. 4k of us and what a game.
That was when some tattoeed Coventry nutter stood up amongst us in the away end and got a few "hellos" if I remember ?  Pub near the ground had one home bar and one away bar.

The only time I have lost my voice was the 2-1 win at Birmingham in the Play Off decider against Leeds, but we were heavily outnumbered that night. I guess Palace away in the FA Cup was a special night - can still picture Treacy's goal.

Palace away "we'll never play you again"

Loved it, I was working in Croydon at that time. One of my nigel friends was at that game and hated it.

On the radio that evening a Palace fan was complaining about the abuse fat bird was getting on the pitch. I think it was Andy Townsend who told the caller "it only bit of them getting the own back" but you could tell he trying hard not to laugh to loud.

Life is made of happy times like this

Palace away (the night game).. we lost 1-0 but was a good going down there on train from London bridge.
Boro away in FA cup.. agree with others the day and night was good apart from result!
Blackburn operation Ewood was quite loud. Messy in the local pub.

Am I allowed to mention the Play Off Final at Wembley ? 30,000 of us I think, Mendoca's cool finishing, Rufus's equaliser. A spectacular atmosphere made better by the fantastic Sunderland fans, so sporting as they actually applauded our Coaches as we drove away at the end. That truly was a day that you will never forget.

Palace 68/69 in the league when we walked from Charlton & filled the Holmesdale

Palace 68/69 in the cup practically filled the ground .....OK slight exageration but we were everywhere that night & as somebody has mentioned not much left of the trains afterwards ;-) .....one I was on people were trying to set fire to it .......strange behaviour when the only escape is jumping out onto train lines !!!!!

Arsenal 68/69 Fantastic day (in a young boy kind of way), meeting at Charing Cross, hundreds on tube, wonder if anyone paid? Chasing Leicester coaches down Holloway Road on their way to smallwall. Looting big time, Jewellers, off licences, clothes shops  all the windows going in & being relieved of their stock. Thousands on the north bank fighting practically the whole game.

& all the others mentioned wolves cup ipswich cup & play off, manchester, bristol, chesterfield too many to mention really happy days .................somewhere along the way i sort of grew up lol

Middlesbrough away in the cup. An awesome day even though we lost. I remember Middlesbrough being the weirdest place I've ever been. There were no locals anywhere and we took over all their pubs. It was a no drinking train up there yet all I could see was hip flasks and the guy at the bar was only selling cokes really as we were all topping them up with whiskey. I got off that train absolutely hammered

Best atmosphere I've ever experienced at Charlton was against palace at home in our first Championship season, it was purely electric and when Varney scored both his goals it felt like it lifted the proverbial roof off the place!

A close second behind that for me is the Swindon playoff at home.

My mates are going on about how they (west ham) are taking 7000 to coventry at the weekend which i thinks incredible. Its not a fixture that stands out, so i assumed it was a one-off. But to be fair they've sold out every away game this season. 5000 to doncaster, 3000 to forest for a game that was on sky aswell.

I know numbers aren't everything, but them and leeds have incredible away support for their league status.

Tracey's goal against palace in the cup had us all going mad.
Millwall in the snow, we didn't stop singing.
43000 at the play off final was the greatest without doubt.

remember it well, Standing on the terrace when we scored and everyone went mental. Never hugged a bloke like that since! Those were the days.

Been to most of the games mentioned but was wondering when was the Yellow game against Forest?. I know it was for a promotion party but can't remember the year.  I was on a coach and remember the final part of the journey when there was nearly a 100 coaches with a Police escort to the ground. I had goose bumps..... Some of the coaches crashed, as I remember

On the snakebite & black that night, God I had a bad head during the game with all the noise. When Macca scored the second my head hit the roof.

Pretty sure palcafc that it was towards the end of the promotion season 1999/2000 think we drew and had to wait a little longer for promotion to be confirmed and yes a couple of coaches were involved in an accident.
