Response from a Wednesday fan aimed at the more literate and balanced Charlton fan, as oppossed to the foul mouthed stereo typical poster above. The reason for so much optimism at Hillsborough is a recognition that we are not the finished article yet, but we can see things coming together after 10 years of hurt.
Our squad has depth of sufficent quailty to see us through in this league, The key for us will be our ability to retain Ben Marshall in January , who has been our stand out player so far.
We are confident because we are just two points behind Huddersfield who have been on a once in a lifetime run, and for whom the pressure will be enormous after two years of play off dissapointment.
Many posters on this thread have a view of Wednesday, based mainly on our visit to you in September. We have made much progress since then, when in case you forgot we drew.
So my question to you is, What depth is there in your squad?, and who scores the goals if BWP gets injured? Sensible responses please, not all northerners wear flat caps any more than you wear Pearly suits.
It is interesting that you say that they key for you is the ability to retain Ben Marshall. For us, I honestly do not believe that there is such a key. Our first team is fantastic to a man and those that are knocking on the door are pretty darn good to. It seems at the moment that our squad is so strong, we are not dependant on any single player. Sure, we would miss any individual if they were injured, suspended or got a better offer elsewhere but not enough to cost us promotion I think.
Gary Manilow read the post again, it was a question not a criticism.Take your point about the depth of squad, dont look too closely at our share of goals, Madine has been our only fit sticker most of the time.I am sure Lowe would have had many more but somebody hammered him , with a horror tackle!
Any way good luck for the rest of the season, see you at Hillsborough, up the owls
I think you can be arrogant on your own board -argue with your own fans- If you are going to visit another board, be polite and not disrespectful. As for our squad depth - (Hamer) - Sullivan -not much between them, (Solly) -Hughes - Hughes has been terrific in midfield following Stephens' injury but unproven to us a right back, (Wiggins) -Wiggins is a class player, Evina is raw but fast and dangerous going forwards - we would miss Rhoys but Evina would get into most League One teams, (Morrison, Taylor) - Cort, Doherty - Cort looked decent the few times we have seen him, The Doc lacks pace but can do a job - got promoted with Norwich, (Stephens, Hollands) - Pritchard has looked like a star in the making, Hughes has been excellent since Stephens got injured, Euell -was playing in Premiership last season, Alonso has played at highest level in Spain but has struggled with niggly injuries since joining us, (Green) - Waggy would get into most League One teams, (Jackson) - JJ not really a traditional left winger and both left backs effective attackers -we also have Harriot who is an exciting prospect- could be replaced by a midielder or Waggy. (Kermogant, BWP) - BWP best in division and Kermit is class but Hayes played consistently at higher level and unfortunate to lose his place to Yann, Euell - maybe more a midfileder than a striker now but can do a job in the odd game, Benson - Solid League One striker. Think we would bring a loanee in if BWP got crocked but we do seem to be ok strength in depth wise.
Our friend the Owl should simply look at the statistics. Goal difference of 8 for instance says it all when you look at the top two. However promotion will be won on the pitch, not with brave ( if somewhat foolish ) words.
Stay on this blog Mr. Owl, because we are having a HOOT !
Points we've won where BWPs goals have been vital amount to 8, so for anyone (weds fans) who make the point that if he gets injured it'll be the end of our challenge. think again !
The Owls would be 12 points down without Madine's goals.
Huddersfield would be 9 points down without Rhodes's goals.
So it seems we are in fact the least reliant on our top scorer out of the top three clubs.
I think Prutton and Semedo do a good job for Wednesday which is effective against 95% of the teams in this league. I think we know that they are going to be up there but I honestly think that we offer so much more from midfield than what they have. I think this is totally tied in to the philosophies of the two mangers. Megson perhaps because he was part of Howard Wilkinson's successful long ball Wednesday team of the 80's has never moved on from those tactics. Powell gives people like Wiggins the license to attack that gives us goals across the board and I think makes us more than a one man (BWP) team. I still don't like to see Wednesday fans slagged off as they've stuck by their team through a lot of shit and still turn up in numbers.
This.
Living in Hillsborough i know that Wednesday fans are hurting from a few years in the lower leagues, but although they may be deluded and a bit fickle (just listen to 'Praise or grumble - Radio Sheffield, on a Saturday night) they do keep going to games in numbers and respect to them, they wear their team strip on a Sunday round the supermarket, win, lose or draw.
I don't really care what they do this season as long as it doesn't affect our promotion.
