Whats the problem at The Valley

edited October 2011 in General Charlton
Its been going on for a few years now but what do you all think the problem seems to be for Charlton playing at home, they look a far better side away. Is the expectation of the fans a problem or do we just not prepare properly tactically. Yesterday I thought Tranmeres tactics (not the timewasting) were spot on and they thwarted everything we tried to do in the first half, surely with the players weve got we should be able to tear these teams apart or is that too much to expect ?

  • Bit like England playing at Wembley
  • Teams can come to the Valley, play 4-5-1, play defensively and waste time, take a point and their fans by and large will be satisfied and see it as a point gained rather than two lost. They know how to play against the better teams in the division because every year there's at least one or two big clubs who drop down and are expected to dominate the division.

Of what I've seen the standard of football and footballer isn't that bad in L1 (I'm not saying that it's good), but there are quite a few teams who are well organised and exhibit some genuine team spirit. Most are destined to stay in this divison, with the odd foray in the CCC or L2 but their ambition is survival. If you underestimate them or switch off then you can end up paying.

  • Teams flood midfield stop us playing.

Was gonna type 'This' above but think
    'This' should be banned!
  • We all go to the valley expecting that today's the day when we are going to totally dominate and destroy the opposition. Our expectations are greater at home because we can remember that not long ago we were achieving these results against much bigger and better teams. We are still considered a big scalp in this division especially at home.Yesterday wasn't a good performance ,but we remain unbeaten and top.
  • "Probelm"? What problem?

    That
  • It's not the biggest pitch at home, it helps opposition bank up and make it difficult - were a big scalp in this league especially at home so if u have a well organised, up for it side it can be tough, it's all about patience and quality to get points.

  • Aside from this season our away form is usually dreadful! Last good season away I can remember was the Championship winning season of 1999-2000. I'll go with the shut up shop mentality of the away teams.

  • Our away form is better because teams don't want to defend at home, they want to go out and win. We are better than the majority in this league so we will almost always win when they play like this.
  • I would be very surprised if, up until this season, there hasn't been a single manager who's come to the valley and not said "Let's frustrate them for 20 minutes and let the crowd get on their backs".
  • The thing is this season I don't think the fans have got on the players backs when things have gone slightly awry. I really do think any pressure on the players is self inflicted, the poison of the last few seasons seems to have abated
  • Quality graph action there Stig, top work.

So, basically, no real "problem" at home then, it's just that this year our away results have been brilliant and have literally almost gone off the graph!

How have you done that stig? Well done.
Gone off the scale at the end.

Thanks very much.  It's just a matter of dividing the points we got by the points we could have got and multiplying by 100 to make it a percentage.

For for example, our away form so far this season is won 5, drawn 1.  That means we've picked up 16 points from a possible 18.  16/18=0.889 X100 = 88.9% I just had to do the same calculation for home and a away points for each season, which was pretty easy with the help of a spreadsheet.

The one thing that this really says to me is that it was our away form that really cost us in our relegation seasons.
  • It is related to the fact that this season the away support has been unremittingly positive. People moan at the Valley. Either the moaners don't travel by and large or they stop moaning when they do. I never understand why some people think yelling "get him off" inspires the players to greater things.

That and the fact that we now have much better players than the divisional average.
  • Our home form represents 2 points a game. If we avergare 2 points a game home and away we will be in the top 2.

    Lets keep things in perspective

  • booing the team off (albeit for 5 seconds) at half time was a bit harsh

yep exactly ... no panic here please

Lets not pretend that this is something unique to the Valley, it's no doubt said by most away managers at most grounds in the country.

Evidence from the media says that is a complacent view. Wasnt it Eddie Youds who was recently reported as highlighting the Charlton crowd's impatience as a weak spot? And only last Saturday on Radio London Phil Parry and Clive Walker discussed "the Valley Factor", and highlighted crowd impatience as an issue.
  • Boo boys down the valley! After 10 minutes the bloke behind me was shouting in desperation like the team should have been winning by now. In Jackson’s interview after the game he said that there is a lot of pressure when at home from our fans. We need to give them a break, be patient and remember we have 90+ minutes to win<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

  • I think at the moment we struggle slightly if Hamer can't distribute the ball to the full backs.  Teams play 4-5-1 but the two wingers push up onto our full backs when Hamer has it so we have to hit it long. We are also left with 3v2 in the middle.  As previously mentioned, teams are more likely to employ this away from home.  Sometimes I think it might help if we could match up the formation againts a team if they are doing that, or one of our strikers needs to drop towards midfield so we can work the triangles!
  • The pixies do not attend our away games and so are unable to affect our performance.

..is this for elf and safety reasons?
  • There is no problem. We are top of the league.
  • The most disappointing statistics for me showed that Tranmere had 3 times as many shots as us, and 4 times as many on target. How do you blame that on the crowd ?

When they announced a start for Kermorgant and Green, I said to my Grandson, I reckon this is our strongest team. Kermit went on to achieve more headers than I have ever seen an attacker produce in one game, but not one as far as I can remember was aimed at their goal. Green did not give his full back enough problems, and thereby did not produce the crosses that we were hoping for.

At the moment the report on our coaching staff should be like most of my School reports, must do better !
