Chris Powell's management style is based on Curbs

edited October 2011 in General Charlton

1. Cautious at the start if the opposition is tough.

2. Loyal to his players.

3. Subs come on late rather than early.

4. 11 men back to defend corners

5. If you're ahead in the game, keep what you've got, rather than attack too much.

praps, wont be exciting enough for some
  • Was thinking the same thing but didn't want to burden him with the "true heir to Curbs" mantle.

Even if it might just be true.
  • he learnt from curbs, so there are bound to be similarities.
  • lets see how we do in the FA Cup.  IF we change our line up to match a lower division side and still go out then he's our man : - )

I did think it was odd that in the press he is always quoted as learning from SGE.  Sure he was a coach under Sven and only a player under Curbs but AC doesn't get much of a mention.

It might just be the non-Charlton press who see SGE as a better story or maybe he does see Ericsson as more of a mentor.

CE, if Powell comes to Bromley in March ask him that question.
  • 6. Signing only players who fit in with the Charlton ethos.

And I think we can add:

    6. A meticulous, planned approach

    7. Ego firmly in check

    8. Takes responsibliy for what happens on the field

    9. Proper understanding of the club's culture

    10. Recognition that at a good club managers are  custodians as much as 'bosses'

I suspect the reason Powell talks more about SGE than AC is that he's smart enough to realise that being saddled with the 'new Curbs' tag  we've now foolishly bestowed on him might turn out to be a mixed blessing. It would be like like someone taking over at Old Trafford or Anfield and claiming to have modelled themselves on Busby or Shankley!
  • 7.  Stability and a long term plan behind him at board level.

  • 92. Similar post match interview style.
  • I remember reading an artical on powell when he first came in as manager and reading a bit from curbs saying powell was the man to take us up
  • 3,073. BWP = Bent

  • Well no wonder we're not in Europe yet if Chris bases his management style on Curbs - time to go Powell, we need to push on!

And let's hope the similarities stop next March. We can't have Powell's team taking the last two months off, as they were prone to do under Curbs!
  • And let's home the similarities stop next March. We can't have Powell's team taking the last two months off , like they uised to under Curbs!
Why do people think that happened, I heard Matt Holland say on the radio that he thought the players used to hit a wall after Xmas, so what's the secret, sign another team in January?

Secure automatic promotion over the Christmas period?
  • Don't forget that he served under Nancy Dell'Ollio's ex as well, an ultra cautious manager. If CP is half as good as Curbs I'll be more than happy.
  • At Corners.....

    "LEAVE SOMEONE UP!!!!"
  • no way he is his own man with his own style,

the only similar things i can see is

1, we have a board and fans in unision behind the mgr and board

2, shrewd signings at pivitol times

3, he was a well respected player befor he became mgr

  • I think the fact he has some Charlton history helps, that always seems to the case when ex-players progress into management. Chris has no doubt picked some things up from working with Sven, but he comes across as his own man in interviews, he has the backing of the board, and this summer he seemed to be signing players with experience at League One level and does seem to have built a squad capable of getting them one step back to where some fans think the club should be. We were stable in the Premier League for several years and then one bad season blew it all to pieces. I do hope Powell and his squad can keep it going for the whole season.

    :-)

Think he learned from all his managers - Jim Smith would have been an influence and Sven. An intelligent bloke like Chrissy will take the best from each and also learn from his own mistakes. We now know how lucky we are to have him. I am genuinely excited to where he will take us but I suppose we just need to focus on this season first.
  • We'll know if Powell really is the New Messiah or just Her Dummy Royal Highness, when .........we are losing 4-0 at halftime,
he brings on 2 more  defenders.

    ;o)

  • 37. Channel balls
    38. Plenty of shots come on shots!

Seriously Chris is his own man but clearly he has learned from some great managers (except Pardont)

I am not going to over analyse his style. To me he is just a top bloke, a credit to his profession, and I am just happy that so far, the good guy is succeeding.
  • He actually learn't a hell of alot from Pardew. How not to treat your players, leave their wives/girlfriends alone, Don't think you're bigger than the club itself and that the world revolves around you and hangs on your every word.

  • He hasn't signed players just because they can play in five positions yet, though.
  • He does seem to believe that the highs aren't too high and the lows too low...

    5. If you're ahead in the game, keep what you've got, rather than attack too much.

Taking BWP off too early invites unnecessary pressure, why not keep attacking and kill teams off?

    Look at Huddersfield.

    Just saying.

  • Gaz looking at huddersfield is a great point, by playing like that they have been stuck in this league as long if not longer than us , maybe they should look at us and not just play the keegan way of keep trying to score, I mean keegan won nothing with Newcastle that way

Maybe if Clarke had more to his philosophy they would've gone up by now
  • 13.   Get the players in a huddle and talk to them on the pitch after the game, but slightly diguise it after a win and not a loss.
  • He hasn't signed players just because they can play in five positions yet, though.
    Andy Hughes? ;-)
  • I was playing an old Charlton live pod cast the other day and in an interview with SCP they asked about managers he had played under and he said that he spent so long with curbs that he was the one he would of learned the most of.

Even went onto say he now understands why somedays Curbs lookd so tired.

  • I would be more inclined to say influenced by Curbs. Turning things around however, I am pleased that CP does not show Curbs tendency to fall out with players occasionally, and I believe that Curbs in general failed to see the benefit and potential of the youngsters we had such as Michael Turner etc. I do have great respect for what Curbs achieved for us, but I just happen to think that we might just find one day that Chris achieves something that Curbs always missed, the England Managers job ! What price that one ?
