Steve Brown - Any Questions ?

  • And IIRC Pardew employed him at West Ham as reserve or youth coach, before Curbs arrived and sacked him...
  • Probably Pards then...NOT.
  • Good point -just Curbs and Pardew -bad question lol
  • i thought brown was as committed as anyone i've seen in a charlton shirt but his lack of pace was a big worry in the top tier but his reading of the game helped him out
as good as he was rufus was a lot better as a defender and (unsurprisingly) top flight wise i agreed with curbs view on his playing situation

did anyone bottle it/try to hide from taking a penalty in the play off final

Yes, his lack of pace always worried me which was a shame as I think he was a terrific player -and to be fair the fact he could overcome the pace issue and he wasn't the tallest either (for a centre back) is a testemant to what a good player he was. He could be aske dabout his injury and how he thinks it affected his career. I always felt with not knowing the full details that withouit it, he would probably have become a top top player.
  • He wasn't the fastest, but that was more exposed at right back than centre half. His positional sense and reading of the game was such that he was rarely stripped for pace through the centre. I remember one home game against Man U where he was absolutely outstanding and almost single handedly kept them at bay for about 92 minutes until Dwight York finally equalised right at the death.
  • Reduction of Substitutes from 7 to 5.

What's Steve opinion of the change.

Currently Chris Powell, has put in Hughes and Euell who can play in different positions. Hughes in particular is a utility player. Does Steve think that it is worth sacrificing creativity for utility.

Does it depend on circumstances and the match ?  Did Curbs ever have a team without a goal keeper on the bench?

In terms of keeping an extra goalkeeper on the bench, like Steve, we have Mat Taylor who can play as goalkeeper, is it worth, (in some games), freeing up the bench space for another creative or attacking option ? Or is it safer, better and fairer to keep John Sullivan on the bench ?

  • Brownie always reminded me of a younger Gritty, mainly down to his ability to play in a few positions.

I also admire the man for his honesty. Whenever he's been commentating for us, if we're playing shit he'll say so.

Probably too late to ask him but wonder what his best moment was for us on a personal level.

Gritty was Gritty - He played everu position for us- was a limited player but used his abilities to the maximum and competed and competed well in the top division. Deserves the upmost admiration and respect. I think Brownie was always a defender though didn't he play in gaol a few times too -I cant remember 100%.

I remember him getting the gloves on in 99 away to Villa in that epic 3-2 win. I was soaking wet thinking 'here we go'. But from the freekick Petterson gave away and got sent off for, Brownie pulled out a brilliant save to keep it out. Top class act.
  • I think I recall Brownie slotting in as a def mid on one or more ocassion, just don't quote me on that.

Think it was 4-3, Mills whacked in a free kick at the death to keep us up. For a week.
  • Oh yeah of course!

It was Watson who got sent off for hauling down Pringle when he was clean through for that freekick. The reason why i hate him with a passion to this day, even though we scored. Good will triumph over evil!.....for a week at least.

This is the game that sticks in my mind for his performance, he was as you say absolutely outstanding, especially considering how strong that united team was.
  • I'm pretty sure that we lost that match 1-0 with that last minute header?

Terrific Charlton performance that day though; losing was total injustice!
  • I think you're right for once Oggy lol. I can still visualise the ball hitting the inside of the post and bouncing in. It was a real sickener considering all the effort Brown and the team had put in.
  • And I think that was the day free Yorkie bars were dished out on the way in. Fate!
  • Best memory of Brownie for me was the 3-2 home win over tranmere when he was instrumentsal in our half time turnround from, I think, 0-2 down.

I'd taken a Dutch guy from work (trying to ingratiate my employer with Shell) who had never been to Charlton before butnknew quite a lot about english football, and couldnt believe he'd never heard of a player that good.
