  • Right, Choice, seeing the way the Simon Francis thread has gone, can you ask him from me; does he think that in recent years our crowd has become less patient with the players, did he notice the pre-match booing of Simon Francis? Does he think we are now worse than other clubs for this type of thing, or does he agree with AFKA that its just standard around the country?. And what effect does he think the crowd had on Francis' performance?
  • I was going to suggest something similar to PA...may I add a couple of questions...

How did he feel if and when the crowd got on his back? Did it encourage him to up his game and prove them wrong, or did he become afraid to make mistakes?

Will do. I actually just asked former 60s Charlton Cliff Myers the same question about the booing and he covers that during his interview...but will also ask Brownie for the modern day perspective

Well I’m not even a CAFC fan, I’m Col U. My mate who got me onto this site always used to say “What has Curbishley got against Brownie?” He said it so much when you was Prem that it used to make us laugh. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I love football and I know of Brownie, remember the big deal when he got sent off with a broken leg etc….

Did Curbs have a grievance against him?

Interesting, did anyone else think that AC had a grievance with him ? Although versatile I felt he always did a good job wherever he played (including goalkeeper). Does anyone think SB liked being a utility player and was it a compliment from Curbs to play him out of position
  • Another one: What does he remember of THAT tackle at Wembley which also magically put Steve Jones away to cross for our fourth?

And being in goal at Villa, what are his memories about that?

Blimey, what a living legend the guy is now I think of it.

But just to make sure its not a complete love-fest, ask him also if he remembers Southend at home one midweek night. We lost 3-0, he was absolute pants. In the context of the Simon Francis thread, can he explain, how does it happen, especially to a player as consistent as he was?
  • I dont think SB thinks that highly of AC.  If my recollection is correct.
  • A comment and a question. Brownie was one of my all time favorites and the best centre half  I've seen in a Charlton shirt (been going since 67). His positional sense, tackling and distribution was superb, not to mention his 110% commitment.

Question: I was also convinced that Curbs had a grievance with him. On numerous occasions Brownie would turn in MOM performances, only to be dropped the very next game in favour of Carl Tiler. How did Steve feel about this and does he know the reason why?
  • You should have gone to City Addicks Queensland... but ill let you off considering the distance!

I'm pretty sure Curbs had a grievance with me yes

  • It used to annoy me that however well SB played (and there were many great performances) he never seemed to be far from getting dropped. There was one game when SB was subbed after putting in another cracking showing and the crowd booed the decision, curbs turned and shouted 'he's injured' or was it 'praps he's injured' I can't recall, but anyway I couldn't see much wrong with him and it showed what the crowd thought of SB.

  • Just ask him about the tackle he did that led to Mendoca's 3rd - only a player like Brownie would have the balls to go for it, and win it.

The next couple of quick passes led to the goal, and hence the springboard for several years of top flight success.

Top man SB - he won't have to buy a drink in any bar I ever meet him in.

As a change from talking about booing, did he enjoy hearing 'Oh Stevie Brown..........' ringing out. I think it was one of the few songs that most people joined in with, not just the N Upper.

Also, a while ago my son gave me for a birthday present the framed Inter away shirt worn by Steve in the re-play against Dagenham & Redbridge, signed by the man himself. Did the team have any serious thoughts themselves about the proposed 'Italian connection' or was it treated as as a small diversion from the serious business of the Prem?  (And would it be alright to flog the shirt on e-bay if I get a bit skint?)

  • What a legend.

Although he only got 9 goals for us, what was his favourite? I remember the belter against Bradford in 97 and he got one against Arsenal in that 4-2 away win.

You are either a. mentally unsound or b. Steve Brown
  • Does he keep in touch with any of his ex team mates ?
  • Why did we always seem to lose against Millwall? (Apart from the Anglo Whatsit cup.)
  • How is Malcome his invisable friend??
  • Why did we always seem to lose against Millwall? (Apart from the Anglo Whatsit cup.)
We didn't play Millwall from 1996 to whenever Brownie left the club (approx 2003??) - so for the best part of his career with us. And we did the double over them in that last season so I doubt he actually remembers our record as being too bad against them.
  • Ask him
Did he ever let us down?

    Three questions for Brownie:

    1. Who was your favorite keeper to play in front of and why?

Bolder, Salmon, Vaughan, Deano, Royce, Amman, Petterson or Ilic?

    2. When Ilic was in goal during the 98/99 the Premier League season his form dipped massively but Curbs took ages to drop him when he had made so many errors. Does it have a massive affect on your game when you have a nervous/low on confidence keeper behind you?

    3. Were you nervous when you walked up to take the penalty at Wembley in the shoot-out and were you confident you'd score?

    Thanks!

or c - a mentally unsound Steve Brown
  • Did Steve intentionally set out to do a diving header in every game he played?
  • When he took a paycut  to re-sign for the team, was it in the contract or did the board up it again when he became a first team regular?

As an aside I remember one match, when we were in the prem and I think it was the Tiler/Brown partnership who looked excellent together and Curbs' surprisingly brought Brown off in the second half.  Brownie had played well and got a massive cheer from 'the whole ground'.  I could see Curbs turned to Day a little bit peeved.  Had it on good authority from some fans behind the dugout, Curbs said something like he always plays to the fucking crowd!!??

Strange isn't it that Tiler went for a few big money moves before he came to us.  The Brown/Tiler combo was excellent, but Tiler wasn't a patch on Brown as a footballer and Brown looked a lot better at centre half.  Whilst he was a good right back, moved inside his passing and reading of the game really shone out.  Football's all a game of perceptions.  Yet we can all see Brownie was a better centre half/player than Tiler, Chapple, Faye, Traore and El Kak.  But just because some moron signed one of those players for a lot of money on big wages once, another moron like 'Appy 'Arry will buy again:  Chapple aside.
  • That's an interesting insight, ColinTat. But did you mean Phil Chapple in your list? He didnt cost much. We signed him when we were still skint.

I'm really looking forward to this interview

I think, from memory, that Chapple cost 100,000 from Cambridge United.

This isn't a question...but just a general point about what i great man SB is....

He used to live near to an old mates of my dad in Brighton. As a young kid I sent him a battered autograph book for him to fill up. Apparantly he lost it but to make up for it, he sent me a signed team photo and a signed football. They both still adorn my wall and the older i've got, the more treasured those two things are.

Can you just tell him that I definately owe him a pint (or twelve); the man is a hero.
