  • It's good that he'll be getting regular games, but I'd rather he was playing in League Two.
  • What was the point in giving him another year on his contract?

Are we making a profit from loaning him out? .. unlikely

WHY bring in Cort on loan and then lend out Mambo.

  • @Lincsaddick

Because Cort is, right now, a much better player?
  • If you are going to send him out on loan then send him to a league 2 side. Gillingham or the Daggers maybe? Can't send him to non-league again!

so why not sign Cort on a free during the break (he was available) and give Mambo a free transfer ? .. I would presume that if a manager has faith enough in a player to grant a contract, then said manager intends to play said player in the team and not merely farm him out to some backwater club where the player will learn nothing. Reports suggest that Mambo did OK against Reading. He should be first in line, in front of Doherty, to replace Taylor or Morrison should either get injured. I repeat, there is absolutely no point in giving Mambo a contract and then in effect saying he is not good enough for 1st team consideration by allowing him out on loan

I think there is every point.

Jenkinson wasn't ready for the first team, was given a one year contract and loaned out to a non-league club.  He made the first team and was then sold for big money.

One more year gives him another 9 months to improve and prove himself.   A league two club would be great but do they want him?   Ebbsfleet is only 2 leagues below us and in the same league that Bradley Pritchard was playing last year.  It would also be a step up from Welling where he was last year.

The Mambo and Jenkinson comparison doesn't hold water. Jenkinson was sold after rejecting a new deal with us and after making several first team appearances. If he had not moved, it is pretty certain that he would be a CAFC 1st team regular. Parkinson did not fancy him for the first team and it wasn't until Powell's arrival that he made a breakthrough.  He was an established international at youth level. Also, it is supposed that he and his family are closet Gunner fans. For Jenkinson it was a move made in heaven and Arsenal got him on the cheap. On the other hand, it doesn't look as though Mambo is in Powell's thoughts as a regular first team player any time soon , why else would he have signed Cort and had him on the bench in preference to Mambo?.. Mambo has no international experience at any level, has made only a handful of first team appearances and, unlike Jenkinson has never been given an extended run in the first team.

I repeat, why sign Cort, Morrison and Taylor after granting Mambo a 1 year contract? .. This, to my mind, smacks of inconsistent and muddled management

I hope so and hope that he has a blinder. He should not not be out on loan, he should be here, on the bench awaiting his chance at first team football. Gravesend will be Mambo's graveyard if Powell is not careful
  • Mambo needs to play v Preston and prove again to Chris Powell that he is 1st team material.

  • Mambo needs a run of games at the highest possible level . Like others I would have hoped a Barnet , Daggers,Gills or Southend might have been interested , but if not why not Ebbsfleet ?

The comparison with Jenkinson is valid as he went from Eastbourne to Arsenal , maybe Mambo could similarly improve with a run of games at this level.

He didnt go from Eastbourne to Arsenal, when he moved he was a first team CAFC regular. Parky sent him to the coast, Powell brought him back

  • Parky called him back to make his debut against Brentford in the JPT.

I was wrong then, but my basic contention still remains

It is surely that Powell believes Mambo has more to learn before he can be relied upon to have a regular run in the first team, which he would get if anything happened to Taylor or Morrison. And if that's what Chris Powell believes, and the Board back him with enough money for experienced cover in two key positions, then that's good enough for me.

I take your point but remember that Doherty is still here. I hope that Powell's intention is to 'educate' Mambo by sending him on loan and not that Mambo was re-signed on a whim. As to 'the money' position, rumours abound of Francis and Benson being allowed to go as well as Mambo. This strikes me as cost cutting as well as giving callow players experience. Whatever, Cort in and three contracted players out is a muddle, though I suspect that Benson and Francis are just not to Powell's taste and that Mambo was re-signed almost in error.

    @PragueAddick

Exactly my reading of it.  In the long run, Mambo may be the answer and Cort, at his age, is not.  But in the short term Cort offers a more experienced and reliable alternative to Morrison, Taylor and Doherty.  I don't see the problem with this, and it certainly doesn't, on the face of it, represent any kind of misjudgement on CP's part.  Good on the board for funding an experienced squad.
  • @Lincsaddick

I suspect you've answered your own question.  He's being sent out for his education, and to get experience in a place where any mistakes won't be costing us.

earlier you suggested that Cort is a 'better player' than Mambo, my contention is that if that IS the case, then Cort should have been signed in the close season and Mambo released or farmed out at the same time and not at this delicate phase of the season when new players are bedding in and team spirit is essential.

  • We've had trouble acquiring good centre-backs over the last few months, despite the wheeling and dealing elsewhere on the park getting in a fourth CB took the longest time to sort out. CP must see something in Mambo, and presumably wants him to get more experience, hence the loan, but I'd rather he was playing at a higher level than non-league and getting a stronger test.

Mambo isn't 'bedding in'. I doubt he was ever intended to be. He was fourth choice centreback, and now the fifth, I suspect by a considerable margin. I doubt Powell ever thought Mambo would make the squad except for cup games and had planned to send him out on loan at the earliest convenience.

Maybe Cort wasn't available in the close season. Perhaps Burnley were waiting to get reinforcements in before letting him go.
  • Its not up to us to second guess what Chris Powell is thinking......

But for what its worth Chris, please play Mambo v Preston , give him a chance to shine / see how he copes, against good opposition, then find out whether is he part of your longer term plans.
  • I don't understand the problem here. Mambo isn't good enough for this level, but he was given a contract based on Powell's view that he has potential. He's sending him out on loan to play first team football and see if he looks like improving up to first team level. If so he extends the contract, if not he's released. Cort is there because he has the ability right now which is what a promotion side needs. I imagine Cort wasn't our first choice back up defender but on missing out on signing some targets permanently we moved for a year's loan.
  • Lincs - You seem to have little understanding of the differences between the "friendly" games (that serve to occupy those members of the 1st team & development squads) and playing real time competitive football.

Mambo for his development needs a long run of games in a competitive environment. He was given another 1 yr contract because of his potential to develop but is still considered a "project", just indeed are Pope, Gough, Bover, Pritchard and Smith.

His performances this year I believe firstly at Bromley and then against Reading shows he has developed from last year. He is beginning to show that he might make the grade but is not going to improve just sitting on the sidelines waiting for occasional JPT/Carling Cup games.

Cort on the other hand is a veteran professional who can provide immediate cover and real competiton to Taylor and Morrisson. The fact that he was not signed until just before the close of the windows was a) he was probably not the clubs first target b) a matter of negotiating just how much of his no doubt hefty Burnley contract would we have to pick up for the year.

Indeed I suggest it was the size of his Burnley contract that precluded many clubs from even considering his signing on a full time basis. However we now have a decent experienced central defender at a price we were willing to pay with the possibility if he performs and we secure promotion of offering him terms next year.

Sounds like a win - win to me.

It's interesting that Carlisle (Clarke)  has also been 'released' by Burnley as well as Alexander, they at least are going for youth over 'experience'
  • Agree entirely with what Grapevine said.
  • would rather he got his experience at a full time club but be good for him to get some games under his belt
