Train Penalty Fare!!

Everyone's usually pretty helpful on here so thought i'd ask.

This morning I got on at a station that has no ticket machiene or office, as usual expecting to buy one on the train when a ticket man come, however he never did. I arrived at Maidstone East (where I work) and there was a few southern eastern workers checking tickets before they let anyone through, I tried explaining to a woman the situation and she was having none of it, apparently I was suppose to walk through the train to find the ticket man!? She then tried giving me a fine, and told me to write down my name and address on a pad etc... I wrote my name and the first line of my address then had a change in thought and said theres no way Im paying £20 when I did nothing wrong, I refuse, she then thought she was funny by saying "oh well your have to get the train back home then" so I walked of slowly and went round the corner where there is a metal gate which they had locked so no-one could leave but clever old me decided to run and jump over without anyone noticing from southern eastern.

I was just wondering if you guys think they can fine, or find me with the details I gave?

I know I probably shouldn't of done it but I was late for work as it was and I'm struggling for money as it is!

  • Depends how bothered they are I would have thought- write down your name and first line of your address in google to get an idea how easy it is to get the rest.
  • 'Not known at this address' on any envelope that turns up (used to be pre-paid from Portsmouth).

Don't think it will though, as they don't have your signature. Well done for standing your ground. Pathetic jobsworths like that will always go for 'easy targets' who are willing to pay rather than people who look like troublemakers, leary youths etc.

  • I actually got a fine once for trying to buy a ticket. The que was to big a my station so I jumped on the train to charin x. I walked up to the fares to pay bit and spoke to a middle aged African man. I asked if i could buy a ticket for the journey i just used and he wouldn't listen so issued me a fine. This ticked me off so much I decided to start buying a single to Waterloo from charin x. Got caught a few times and ended up with a court case. I laugh about it now but it was £180 out my pocket for the courts.
  • Frustrated me so much! The fact I had the money and explained was willing to pay my fare!

Just hope nothing comes of it and I lose no money!

  • and the google trick, the only thing that does come up is my twitter! lol!
  • Try 192.com and put name and area this gives you everything and who you are associated with and phone numbers
  • And also... British Transport Police would have access to that info.  if she really wanted to pursue you, sorry.
  • He only wrote his first line of address so will be fine.
Unless they caught a hilarious bit of cctv of you jumping over the gates.

I can't stand those t)-ts in their silly hats waiting at the station as if they own the trainline.
  • And his name tho Mendonca ?  Really could they not find it?
  • I appealed my fine i recieved back in August and got the money back. Complained the guy was being a pushy tosser aswell and they said they apologised for the experience i had and would look into it. I was actually surprised by how decent they were.

Anyway when i went to pay some of the money the guy said if i don't pay something it could go to court (not sure if that is true or not). So it might be an idea to call the company, make up some bull about how the woman started writing a ticket, but you found your ticket so she stopped putting it through but you want to confirm the fine is not being proccessed. If they say you are clear then happy days, if not then pay it off and get the appeal letter done.

  • Towards the end of last season I was on the train up to the Valley from deepest darkest Kent, when it was pointed out the Network Card I had was a day out of date.  I apologised to the ticket inspector on the train and got ready to hand over the difference in fare, but oh no I was charged again for a full ticket price as the ticket I had could not be upgraded as it was "illegal".  Disgruntled I handed over the money and he explained I could get a refund from my home station  on my next visit.  Fair enough I thought but then the bloke said he had to destroy my Network Card to stop me trying to use it again, at this point I got less docile.  He got angry when I pointed out that the card was evidence to obtain a refund and he threatened to stop the train and have us ejected, the stupid thing is that I am the most easy going person you could meet but everyone around us was acting as though we were proper hooligans.  In the end he gave up and moved on as he seemed to decide six 30 something blokes were not the easiest of targets.

Stupid thing is I had presented the very same card to get my ticket 15 minutes earlier, I was also informed by my home station that they could not give a refund as I had to apply for one in the post and that the guard had acted incorrectly.  I should have been able to upgrade
  • Whenever I've travelled before if there is no ticket machine or counter, it's your responsibility to pay at the other end.  I've never heard of having had to find the ticket man.  They have no proof that you didn't subsequently buy a ticket?  Maybe explain the situation to the ticket office at Maidstone East, and if I remember rightly they can issue a ticket from your destination.  Keep the ticket, and if they do contact present that as proof that you did pay.

It seems that you're paying daily.  So taking a guess it appears you're quite often jumping the train.  I think a lot of us did it in our youth, and I personally wish more people would do it en-masse considering the service and the price we pay for shit.  I used to buy a five day return, which can cover you on your return journey.  But they're not usable at peak times, they're may be an alternative like this ticket that you can use during peak time.  Worth asking about.
  • I hope that nothing does come of it, as I didn't even write it on the fine form! It was on a post-it note size bit of white paper!
  • And his name tho Mendonca ?  Really could they not find it?
I would think of it being similar to a case where somebody gives a random mate's name and address, without the full postcode and signiture to complete the signoff process?
  • If they do find you, deny it was you and say it was someone who gave your details. If they say they have photo evidence it was you, say you'd like to see it and if it does turn out that they have any cctv images, just say you had alcohol issues at the time and were often in a confused state and then just pay the fine. I doubt you'll hear anything else about it to be honest.

Thats is seriously scary.  Name, full address including post code, phone number and even the price I paid for my bloody house.
  • An example of broken Britain.

People suggesting illegal fare dodging and Mart using an "I was drunk" excuse (not for the first time I suggest).

  • Just seen South Easterns Twitter feed.

Are you Jack Willmore, 32 Marlborough Crescent ?
  • He isnt, but I am, and so is my wife.
  • I got done coming out of Dartford the other week as I didn't know it was outside the zone.

This is despite the fact I have a 2-5 season ticket, plus because I've moved from Canary Wharf to Kensington I now have to get a 1-2 extension for an extra £30 a week because they don't just do a Zone 1 extensions. Thieving robbing bastards they are!

  • It is true....well it was 11 years ago when I was on the railway.

If you can not get your ticket at your departure point, you must make an effort to find the conductor while on the train. All mainline trains have them, and some local trains have them, so not being able to find one isn't an excuse. If this isn't possible, should you change trains, then get a ticket form the ticket office at the staion you change trains.

The ticket inspectors are able to check if ticket offices and /or ticket machines are not open/working. So, don't try to use that as a reason for not paying. One of the main things that gets them going off on one is saying that you was running late and the ticket office had a long quee. It is not a reason to not buy a ticket. You wouldn't turn up at Charlton at 3pm without a ticket, see a long quee for tickets so just walk into the ground.

As for tracing you and your address. They do have a very good system of address checking. Im not sure who they use, but its a system almost if not as good as the police. I used to know a few who would not let anyone get away, and also some normal ones who would understand the problems involved in the rush hour so showed some understanding.

  • Buy a car.

  • I've been communting for over 25 years now on Southern Region, South Eastern, Connex and all the other names that have run the line from Dartford to London. I have never had any trouble. I've forgotten my ST or let it accidently run out on many occasions or not been able to buy a ticket etc loads of times. Whenever I've got to London Bridge or Cannon St etc without a  ticket I have NEVER had any bother. Just be honest.

  • Best laugh with tickets was when I worked at Plumstead Station and the single fare from Charlton was 50p,all these jokers with somberos on,toy donkey under their arm, suitcase and duty frees clanking would get off and pay from Charlton! Then the fare went up to 60p and it was 50p from Woolwich Dockyard and the amount of people who went on their holidays to Woolwich Dockyard was amazing!
  • Fare bunking used to be a big part of my life but it's too difficult now they've got barriers. Spent many an evening journey home, carriage hopping in order to avoid the gold tops.
  • It seems ironic to me that people criticise the cost of the tickets then they travel without paying if they can get away with it. It's no wonder the fares are so high is when so many fail to pay.

I have been aware for years that travelling without a ticket incurred a fine. If it didn't then it would encourage people to travel without a ticket - if you get caught you only pay what you would've have paid upfront, and if you are not caught you travel for nothing.

I, personally, can't see any justification is jumping over the fence to avoid paying, but that's just me.

    Scary indeed.
  • to be fair i think he wanted to pay but then objected to being fined when he hadnt had an opportunity to buy a ticket - unreasonable in my book  - what are you supposed to do search for a ticket inspector.....
