I like the idea of Juventus playing Notts County as it makes it a pretty historical match, the only thing that I don't like about it all is that a scumbag like Lee Hughes gets to play in a glamour friendly when he doesn't even deserve to be visiting the likes of Scunthorpe at the weekend, let alone one of the biggest teams in the world and to play in what looks to be an excellent new stadium.

Maybe Juve will sign him as his character seems to suit the club. :-)
There's something really warm and good about this ....... Juve could have picked a top European or South American club, as many would have expected.
But they didn't. They went back to their roots and recognised that the oldest club in the world had played a major part in helping Juve become the club they are today, despite Notts County no longer being amongst the elite these days.
And what a wonderful chance for average Third Division journeymen players to take such a major part in such a glamourous occasion.

Fair enough, J Block, Sheffield FC were founded in 1857 ...... but played 18-a-side. They have never played in the Football League, because they insisted in playing to their own rules - or something like that.
Did you know there was a 'Sheffield Thursday' .......? I kid you not; some of the Sheffield FC players called themselves Thursday Wanderers and, erm ...... played on a Thursday.
I'm not condoning what Lee Hughes did but just out of interest, what do people think he should be doing? People (especially on here) seem to talk about him as if he's Ian Huntley or Baby P's parents, always makes me wonder what you think should have happened to him?
Personally I think he should be rotting in a cell for at least another 10 yrs. The man's a murderer, pure & simple. If you get pissed and get behind a wheel then you pay the cosiquencies of your actions.
cheers henners, im sure when i did a topic on charlton when i was a kid at school i read somewhere forest gave us there old strip but maybe wrong, must have been the gunners as they were just down the road, i cant see why we would have chosen to have the same strip as our nearest rivals (distance wise) of the time.

Because they weren't rivals.
"we" were 14 year olds boys starting a team while Arsenal were a league side.
Now, don't start me on Charlton Rovers of the British League who also played in red.............

Totally agree, when I heard about it I felt the same. Can you imagine one of the Sky 4 opening a new stadium with a match against a lower league Itaian side if they shared a similar historical link...

That's a pretty stupid statement to make.
Coming from someone who thought our squad last season was as good as Brighton, I'll ignore you, if you don't mind. Hasn't the school term started yet?
Funny that, that statement didn't look out of place until after January with many other fans on here at the time also agreeing that player for player we were at least as good as them so I think that is a valid point that I made at the time. Typical let's try and insult someone I don't even know by making reference to their age which I don't even know, maybe if I actually was a school kid you'd have some decent ammunition there but as that is not the case that's a very poor form of 'insult'.
I think it is very stupid that you try and compare someone like Lee Hughes who has ran over and killed someone under supposed influence of drink and drugs then fleeing from the crime as to not get as bad a punishment and who now seems to show little or no remorse over it to supposed match-fixing (which I am assuming is what you are alluding to). And just to clear it up for anybody the facts are now is that the head of the current Italian FA has publically said that the former President was wrong to relegate Juve because they were never found guilty of bribing refs just selecting two refs which they deemed to be 'favourable'. Graham Poll for a one-off Champions League qualifier, and a Serie A ref who officiated Juve 5 times and their results under him were 1 win, 2 draws and 2 defeats.
Either way my main point is that I find it insulting that you could suggest that my club is on a par with a such a scumbag like Lee Hughes.
We wear red because Arsenal gave us a set of their old kits when we were a youth's team.
Not according to Eddie Marshall, one of the boys who founded the club in 1905 and who was the club's original centre half: "Our shirts were made of red flannelette. We bought some yards of the material cheaply at the drapery store that used to stand at the corner of Hare Street, Woolwich".
This was taken from an interview by Harold Deacon that appeared in the 1955 Jubilee Handbook. If I get the time I'll copy the rest of it elsewhere on CL.
As for Arsenal, they got their red kits from Nottingham Forest.

Disagree slightly on this. Yes horrendous thing that he did, but many people have missed being in the same situation by a whisker, what I think demands a long period of incarceration is the fact that he ran away and tried to get away with it,i.e. not take responsibility for it or remorse about it. On the other hand the Plymouth goalkeeper caused an awful event, but he did not try to hide or runaway and whilst the sentence is not as long as some of may have wished,I have no qualms about him returning to a football career after he is released.

I suppose one of the reasons they chose Notts was because they'll want to guarantee a victory in their first home game.

We've already argued the Lee Hughes case until we are blue in the face.
This thread is about Notts County's game with Juventus.
I don't think anyone ever gave us a kit. Never seen any reference to that in any of the histories.

a few of the teams joined the Football League as I remember from the article in Voice of the Valley but most disappeared.

Forza juve will not be happy that Lee Hughes scored an 87th minute equaliser.
