Benno

edited September 2011 in General Charlton
Just wanted to say one thing that not many people have acknowledged - this is only Bensons 2nd season with us, last year we hardly created chances in the same fashion as what we've seen this year in a handful of games.

Our style of football now will suit Paul Benson and with the obvious link up with Green I for one am pleased he didn't move.

I reckon in this team he is a 15-20 goal man and as much as I used to like euell to suggest he offers a more potent goal threat than Benno is in my opinion wide of the mark.

I think we should get behind Benno and I'm sure he'll come up trumps and play a big part this season....if I remember correctly it wasn't until Andy Hunts 2nd season that he really shone.

Whoever plays let's get behind the boys this year, we have a lot to be excited about :)

  • I am pleased he did not leave too
  • Well said folder agree 100%
  • i hope he stays too
  • Agree x2. If benno can get himself in the team I'm pretty confident he will score us bundles of goals. Getting in front of Hayes and bwp is the tough part

    Good luck benno
  • I was Benno's biggest critic when he arrived with Abbott but he has improved his game, gives 100% and always looks like he might score. Very rare combination at this level. I hope he gets a chance this season.

We love you Benno , we do ...

    etc etc
  • Yep agree with the post.  Always given 100% and has scored more than his fair share.  Not a "glamourous" name but he does graft and finds the net. Think he has always conducted himself well since he's been here and comes across as a decent bloke.

Glad he is staying and pleased we'll see him in a Charlton shirt again.

  • I'm glad he's stayed - he's another option for Powell and, given BWPs injury record, I'm sure he'll feature this season.
  • Like him a lot and did so last season, but still expect him to go on loan
  • I also like him a lot, and am pleased he stayed.  And it's easy to think of a song for him - just sing any song about Jason Euell, but instead say 'Benson Paul'.
  • I'm a big Benno fan too.

Intelligent player, good enough touch for this league and plays his heart out.
Knows where the back of the net is also. What more can you expect from a striker?

  • Yeah - I've always thought his close control/touch was pretty skilfull at times for such a tall feller.
  • I'm surprised to be honest that he didn't go in the transfer window , i thought clubs in this division and in the division below would be queuing up round the block after him , can see him going on loan , or out in the next transfer window though.

Last seasons team was very poor and didn't really create lots of chances for Benno , in this seasons team things could be different.
  • yep very happy he stayed. a different type of striker to our main two. would have him infront of Euell to play upfront off the bench.

  • Had a great game against Reading in the cup til he went off with a busted finger. Glad he has stayed. Proper striker

  • I am very glad he's with us, big players who can drift inbetween defenders' zones are a modern phenomenon that is very effective.  Pretty much like all our forwards previously he lacks physical presence, but he is effective in the box with crosses.  Unlike Moody who had excellent movement, Benno's more often than Moody loses his man and looks sharp.

I know this wouldn't happen, but I'd keep Benno and Euell on the bench.  Taylor is a former goalie, and can cover that position.  But personally, and especially for home matches Benson would be on the bench.  Sullivan for some matches, but with Green's crosses Benson offers a different approach.
  • I'd always have Benno on the bench over Euell. Powell has an annoying tendency to try and protect leads by taking our attacking threat out of the game. Goes 5 at the back and has Euell dropping too deep. It just invites teams onto us and sets up a nervy finish. Having Benno on the pitch means we'll always have a threat up top. Delighted he's stayed
  • I am also very happy he stayed, but unless he doesn't get a decent chance in the team and scores goals (which i think he definitely will with game time) before the January transfer window opens he'll be off. Purely because there's already been interest and by then SCP may be eyeing up another potential target. Id have him over Euell most days too, I also really dislike the 5-5-0 technique we've tended to take on towards the end of games lately, it attracts attacks by the opposition and seriously endangers our leads, IMHO. Offence is most definitely the best defence, and im sure with our current team we could attack well enough to keep the opposition out of our half and save our leads or regain a lead, which would be far more effective than our current tactics.
  • Adding my name to the big Benno love-in.
  • Happy here as well. Intelligent player. Knows how to work with Danny Green.

I couldn't really understand why we were willing to let him go anyway.

  • Well, I been saying all summer that we should keep him and I'm glad we did. If through injury, suspension or lack of form he finds himself in the team, he might be very hard to dis-lodge. He got to get in there first. As to who should be on the bench between him and Euell, well that depends. If there's another midfielder there, such as Prichard, then it's just purely as a striker then Benno would get the nod from me.

  • Chuffed that Benson is staying, think he will be crucial as he can fill in for both BWP and Hayes which I'm not convinced any of our other strikers can.
  • Benno and Green= Goals aplenty
  • Thought he played very well and linked up very well with Euell against Reading so sure he can do what is required if needed.
  • The loan window opens next week ....
  • I like it how everyone expects he's staying! He's not! He'll be off to Bradford or Bournemouth on loan when the window opens!
  • Benno will get plenty of chances to play as will most of the 1st Team squad. The cups will really kick in before this side of Xmas and we ought to be looking to get through a couple of rounds in all of them. The games will come thick and fast, as will the injuries, suspensions and probably some loss of form, so all of the players who aren't currently getting much of a look in will get a go. It's such a long season at this level and we're only just into September.

If I were Chris Powell, I'd be really happy with the squad at my disposal. It has a depth not seen for a few seasons. Two good goalies, four good full-backs, four/five good centre-halves, options out wide, untold midfielders and four/five strikers.

  • Not sure if he will go on loan, the whole point of trying to sell him was he was in his last year of his contract and we could get a fee. Loaning him out is wroth very little to us, unless we sign a striker on loan
  • Why would selling someone with one year left on his contract bring in any less than loaning the same player for a season.  People get obsesed with transfer fees, loan fees are often not reported but they work in the same way and are dependent on contract length etc.
  • Agree with all the positive posts and that given his chance in this team he'd possibly get to 20 this season but there's still a distinct possibility he could leave on loan or in January. That said, the Elliot money might enable his "replacement" to come while he's still around.
  • glad he stayed but only because we'd be up shit creek without a paddle. Still believe he'll leave when the loan window opens on a loan deal being made permanent in January.
