HP touchpad firesale

edited August 2011 in General Charlton
Any of you techies out there will probably have seen this already but HP are making there version of the ipad (the HP touchpad) obselete even though it's only been out a short amount of time . In the states , Australia and Canada so far the retailers are selling them reduced from $599 to just $99!!!

The only thing is the operating system is being made obselete as well which means it will work but there will be no further updates.

Hopefully the UK will be next as at those prices it's the perfect device for people who don't want to shell out on the ipad

  • Them looters must be kicking themselves they didn't go for the i pad instead..................
  • Spoken to HP and they are going to drop the price on their UK site, but they don't seem to know when or to what. The guy said to keep checking the website today and tomorrow. If it drops to under £100 I'll probably get one, going to be fine for email and web surfing, plus there's a kindle app available for books.

I'm hoping that HP will open source WebOS, much like Netscape open sourced their code and Mozilla was born.
  • Think they'll go for £129/£159 would be my bet

Unfortunately, partial though I undoubtedly am to a bit of crApple hate, HP's tablet is absolutely dire. Using it is a horrendous experience. If WebOS goes open source i'll get one. If not, I won't bother, as I'd sooner poke out my eyes with a blunt shitty stick than use it.
  • I don't see the appeal of Ipads or any of related ones tbh
  • Glad I don't get involved with all this keeping up with the Joneses lark, just wish I was the one flogging it to the mugs...

me either. The ipad is a hateful thing - just use a frickin laptop already! The ultimate 'must have gadget not because it does anything useful but because Apple tell you so'

There's a niche market where tablet computing is useful (medical profession, some teaching environments, stock inventory etc) but all that is utterly rendered useless by Apple's 'we tell you what you can run on it' approach and their insistence on you using The Worst Piece Of Software Ever Written (iTunes) to install/sync it.

If MS ever pulls its finger out of their arse and develops a tablet os that doesn't suck donkey balls, they'll blow crApple out of the water. No-one in corporate IT who has to manage devices ever wants Apple's jank anywhere near their network.

Really that bad Leroy? I've heard mixed reviews, but they all agree that WebOS is the good part of the package.

£129 is a bit borderline, it's too much to be an impulse purchase, and if I think it through logically I'll probably wait for the Amazon tablet that's rumoured to be out towards the end of the year.

As for the appeal, I'm a self employed software developer, I'm on the web pretty much all my waking hours either working or getting emails from my US based clients. A pad of some sort would be better than my phone for web browsing and emailing.

Now I may find that once I have it I don't use it much after a while (which is apparently what most iPad owners find, they use it like crazy for a month or two, then it sits there gathering dust), and that's why I'm not willing to pay out the crazy prices they generally want for one.
  • WebOS is a lovely, don't get the fanboy vitriolics about it from Leroy, I think the best description of the hardware is a 'chubby ipad'.

No fanboiism here. All tablets are crap and pointless, even the Android ones. WebOS is just clunkier than an extremely clunky thing that has just had some clunky bolted onto it.

Had an Ipad for a year and it gets used everyday. I rarely bother firing up the laptop unless I need to do some work or really want to look at a site that uses flash.

Having said that I got it free from work and would never spend £600 on one. A tablet for £100 or so I would definitely have snapped up though

  • Ok - looking to get a tablet for under 200 quid.
Basically moving our computer from downstairs to spare room as MrsTwoLungs is student nurse and needs to study away from telly and screaming 9 month old baby.

Will only use to really surf internet, read emails, and maybe download some apps/stuff for baby to watch and learn.
Any steerage in right direction would be appreciated - should it definitely have Android and what is the minimum version etc. Oh and really want a capacitive screen for some reason as feel I have missed out by not having one on my phone !!!

    Cheers all

Teacher, so use mine every day too. Watch films, read books, use Internet, email, games etc. Also rarely fire up my laptop.
  • Got myself and Rothko one each of the 32gb ones for £115 each from carphone warehouse. Seems like everywhere else that has lowered prices has sold out.

Not something if have ever been that bothered about at the full price but worth it for that
  • for the money it's a steal, and even better that Buckshee got in there before the CPW website died!
  • Lucky buggers!

Got it in my basket at dixons.co.uk, then the site crashed
    Same with CPW

Got a couple of numbers to call first thing tomorrow as more stores are supposed to be lowering their prices over night.
  • Got an iPad 2 when it was launched and like others use it every day. Never go near the laptop now unless I have some serious work or want to burn something.
  • do you have to pay monthly for connection on these things?

Only if you want a 3G version. WiFi there is no charge of course.
  • HP is wi fi only Suze.

  • Sorry to be a pain.
Does the HP have many apps to download ?
  • Just got staples website to accept and order at £89, though I'll believe it when it arrives at my door! Last night was so frustrating, so many companies with websites that just can't cope properly.
  • Ordered one from staples at full price this morning, I'll return it if they don't give me a discount. My credit card has been charged but have no order number or confirmation email. I rang them up and they said they're not guarenteeing any orders.
  • Got a reply from staples, out of stock, order cancelled :(
  • get the feeling that the same thing will happen to the two that I ordered for rothko and myself. Oh well

  • I'll think you'll be ok, it was a mass mail, so if you didn't receive it yesterday you should be ok, unless their fulfilment system really screwed up
  • I was talking to someone who got lucky with one from there and they reckon that if you got the original email then you'll get one so fingers crossed.

Next thing they are doing is selling the pre 3 phone for £46 which has only been out a few days and was expected to retail around the £300 mark.
  • I have a friend who works as a buyer for Dixons, she has been told that they'll be sold off at £89 a piece
  • My staples one is out for deliverys today albeit at the original prices of £350. I don't want it for that! Have been told over the phone that the difference will be refunded, time will tell
  • Same as Kiely - I got one through work and its use now exceeds the work laptop. Only use that for word and picture processing now. There are things that drive me mad about the iPhone and iPad, but to dismiss them as pointless and useless Leroy, to me, means you simply don't have a point or use for them. Fair enough, but many of us do...
