Welling 0-3 Charlton - Post match comments

3 nil and a decent run out for nearly all the players.

Freddie Warren MOTM for what it is worth.  Seemed very assured at RB

Wiggins good going forward less so defending.

Green a ball of energy and a great goal

Trailists Andersen and Williams both did well.

Morrison looked very assured and hollands useful.

Can't read too much into it especially as Welling were tired out 2nd half having to play a whole new side but promising signs at least.

Good to meet Tangoflash and a few others.  Thanks for the extra shirts to auction Jim, some real classics there.

  • warren looked really assured
hollands morrison and taylor looked top draw to me.

hollands delivery and discipline to sit and just spray was top draw.
and morrison as true to recent reviews read it very well
and taylor would head away everything

and danny green was just dangerous. every time ball was at him you thought something would happen.
  • Positive start to the season, some good new players if only i knew who they were

  • what were the shirts henry?
  • Went expecting the usual pre- season bore fest but was pleasantly suprised.

Players seemed up for it and got stuck in which is good for friendlies as it instils a winning mentality.

Was most impressed with Bover. Excellent technically, great use of the ball and strong with it.

Was also impressed with Sullivan as was behind our goal and he didnt shut up, barking orders, organising the players in front of him and constantly motivating.

Doherty looked solid and would love it if he can find some form. Now he has competition it might kick him up the backside.

Came away pleased and didnt expect the result or style of play from a group of players still learning each others names.

    Good day.

  • Anyone else think Morrison looks like Vidic?
  • We looked very good 2nd half ... Danny green very dangerous

Henry ... Saw you slumming it behind the goal as I sat in the old stand ;-)

Charlton numbers seemed less than usual especially in pub before and after game
  • Also agree with Rodney ... Sullivan very much in control and giving orders ... Nice to see

You're welcome mate. Besides, my mid-life belly won't squeeze into them anymore.  I was wondering who the RB was in the 1st half. thought he looked the best player, certainly in the first 45. Can anyone tell me, was it Morrison who got the 2nd goal? I happened to look away and missed it. Green scored an absolute belter. was also impressed with Hollands (the bandiest legs i have ever seen though). I'm not going to jump on the "Elliot not good enough" wagon, but thought he was poor and seemed to be lacking confidence today. all-round, a good run-out.
  • what was people's views on the "new style" of football? i know it was first game of pre season and all that.....just was there any signs?
  • "new style" of football?               you mean winning?  Well, I could get used to it. ;-)

  • Second half especially, evidence of the midfield linking up with our defenders and attack and when we did go long it was usually a long diagonal ball rather than an aimless hump into the channels.

If that's a taste of things to come then it bodes well.

And yes, I know it was only Welling.

  • Others may disagree but the style seemed to be positive and playings were always looking to find space and although there were the odd cross field passes and hoofs out of defence there was a lot of nice intricate passing at times.

Difference for me from charlton sides of recent seasons is that the players seemed to want the ball and more importantly knew what to do with it when they did and found space/ got into position when they didnt.

  • The dip in Danny green's shot as it went over the keeper was excellent
  • First half: Wiggins, Stephens, Warren and Bover impressed me.

Second: The whole team in general was good....stand out performance was defo Green.

Don't worry Rodders, we'll soon knock that out of em. ;-)
  • Ha ha, hope not.
  • Thought the programme was a total bargain at £1.50
  • Missed todays game as was at Silverstone watching a pretty deflating effort from LH and JB.

Any news on why BWP didnt play?

    At a wedding apparently.
  • At his dad's wedding, no less. Will be interesting to see how BWP and Alonso both play in Spain

  • Does someone we whole gameknow put the teams up for each half. I spent the wholw game trying to work ou who was who

Good workpout will be lots of cmpetion for places but the extra urgency of Green and Solly impressed as well as a couple of others who i'm not sure who they were !

  • Solly was very impressive I thought, he and Green linked up superbly at times. Was at the wrong end to see much of Warren but he seemed to do OK
  • i agree with others, warren really stood out, really composed and effective considering hes normally a centre mid, stood out at u18s there when i saw him, but did well at rb today - didnt seem out of place.  Really impressed with bovers touch and awareness too, clearly got a great talent and always wanted the ball, need to make sure CP uses him wisely though.
Though morrison was the most assured of the centre backs, although the german trialist grew into the game well, and i also thought mambo dominated in the air well and brought it out from the back well - if we can develop his positioning then he could become top drawer.  Still believe if we can get osbourne or okuhungae - would add pace and power to compliment morrison and taylor.
Definately needed hollands in the middle of the park as the gap between defence and Bover-stephens in the first half was too large and thats what left the defence exposed more than in the second.  Hollands was comfortable and tidy in posession and could work effectively with an attacking mid like stephens who passed quite well but did not sit, interesting to see how alonso performs too.
  • A solid performance. Drinking before the game was with good company at a decent pace, continued post match. left phone in a taxi two Saturday's in a row.

As for the game, whatever !
  • Thought I'd mention it again here as it seems to have gone un-noticed in the other Welling thread and I think it may interest some fans but Carl Jenkinson was at the game today sat by the Welling dugout.
  • Danny Green and Mark Morrison looked standout to me. Morrison looked collosal at the back. Freddie Warren looked excellent.
  • thanks you guys!
  • forzajuve_27 Jenko is good mates with Welling skipper Jack Parkinson and of course played for Welling On loan.
  • Guys can someone go down the first names of the charlton players for me first half and subs... Im trying to sort out the highlights and your site just has first names. ta
