I remember watching the Liverpool Soccer 6 game on Sportsnight, or whatever it was, and not knowing the score before the game and being a bit embarrassed when we went 0-3 down, only to come back and smash 6 past them. And you have to remember that although this was 6-a-side football, these were the days when Liverpool used to win absolutely everything and were the English Champions. And little old Charlton took them to the wood shed. Brilliant.
Also, watching the Watford game again reminds me just what a "first class playing surface" there was at Shitehurst Park.
Can't wait to watch the soccer 6's at lunchtime. This was the reason I started supporting Charlton. I was 6 watching it on the smallest tv in my bedroom and said to my Dad "This team is good" and he said he'd take me to a game. Since then there's been no looking back.
Seems crazy now having an indoor 6-a-side tournament during the season. This was played November or December 1988? No way they'd do that now. The nearest one now is The Masters we've had with the ex-pros over 36. Remember watching Charlton win the London Masters one year at the old London Arena in Docklands...Colin Walsh stroking home the vital penalty in the shoot out against West Ham after a 3-3 draw in which I am sure we were 3-1 down!
Watching those clips have bought a tear to my eye!!
I know the crowd against Everton was about 11,000 and against Watford no more then 6000 but if you didn't know that you would have thought there was 30k + on noise alone may I add ;-)
As we were the defending champions and thought we could win it again me and about 10 or so pals sqeezed into my mum and dads livingroom to watch it .We lived at the time on the 7th floor and had a right plank living below us on the 6th who used to beat up his girlfriend (Propper scum)
I think there are few who post on here that were there that night so if I miss anything they can correct me?
My dad was in the livingroom watching the football with us while my mum was in her room reading a book with ear-plugs!! The drink was flowing and every now and then if someone wanted a fag they would go out on the landing,
Can't remember who it was but they left the front door on the jar!! Charlton wasen't do too good and noise level was rising the next thing we knew was the livingroom door burst open and there was the scumbag with some kind of tool in his hand!! The only thing he didn't account for was a dozen or so teenagers and my old man who was always a bit handy if you know what I mean? The fella's face turned white as he wasen't expecting that..LOL
Before anyone could get to him my mum was standing behind him asking what was he doing in her flat? With that he legged it to the front door with all of us right behind him with my dad leading the charge! The scum just made indoors before we got to him and as he had a little girl we left well alone as I think we had made our point?
We all went back upstairs to watch Charlton bomb out the compertiton at the early stages but it turned out to be one of those nights that still gets talked about today!
My mum RIP had no fear telling the scumbag to get lost. The look on his face was a picture he must have thought there were only 2 or 3 of us in there?
A month later they moved out but everytime we saw him he would say nothing a bow his head.
I too, remember this as if it was yesterday, despite being about 8 at the time!! Was it the very next week that we beat a Gary Linekar inspired, Leicester City at home 2-0 with Jimmy getting both again?
We did beat Leicester in the next game (the following week) 2-0 at Selhurst but your memory is playing tricks regarding some of the facts!
Melrose's most notable contribution against Leicester was to be elbowed by visiting captain Steve Walsh who was sent off for violent conduct.
Gary Lineker did not play for Leicester that day, indeed he had already buggered off to Barcelona!
Both Charlton goals came in the second half and were both scored by Mark Stuart.
Following that game we went to West Ham and won 3-1 (the famous 9-second goal) but then lost our next five games in a row and did not win again until December 28th when we beat Man City 5-0.
Cheers Ormiston,
Bloody right memory all over the show now you mention that! remember the Leicester game, although for some reason thought Melrose and not Moira/Amos, got the goals! Like I said though was only about 8 at the time!
Always remember at school kickarounds and playing for Orpington Rovers, I always said I was Jim Melrose after that Everton game and the nine second goal at Upton Park. All the other kids would go 'who?' as they run around pretending to be Ian Rush or Lineaker or whoever!
That Man city game sticks with me quite well as well, can still picture Walshie's goal in front of the Holmesdale where he cut it accross the face of the goal and it seemed to hit one post then roll along the line before hitting the other post and going in! Or is my memory of that all over the shop as well???? Amazing what you seem to remember from your childhood days! Obviously before booze and other things get hold of your memory!
One other thing was that Adidas kit, as it was the first Charlton kit I owned, still think it is the best we have ever worn! and them shirts are literally as rare as rocking horse s**t nowadays. Was searching all over for one recently and found one on E bay. it was an original from the full members cup final. Number 16, so dont think it was worn. Some bloke in Holland was selling it for 200 sheets! Decided after a few light ales to get it, but had already bloody gone!
Anyone on here buy it?
Thanks for these video's as well, sitting here with a few beers, remebering my childhood memories, or not as the case maybe!!!
Dying to upload some more but my job got in the way. Left YouTube encoding this morning, but my account says still processing so I guess YT doesn't like to process three videos at once!
With any luck the home goals for 86/87 will be live tonight. These will include many of the games mentioned above. The first half of 87/88 is coming, alas, Dad says my sister taped over Jan - May 1988 with an episode of Neighbours. On the bright side, this was 1989 so Kylie is in the episode. But it's during the perm years and she looks a bit silly.
Anyway, I have some more Soccer Sixes games to come (Vs. West Ham and Vs. Forest I think) and as many end-of-season compilations as I can get my hands on (some of them have some level of copy protection on which is a shame). If anyone has any more, I am happy to help get them uploaded. We're particularly after the Melrose Vs. West Ham game, which has gone missing from the March51 archive. Heartbreaking.
I've got the Melrose 9 second one in the loft somewhere Jimmy 85, although from memory it's a pretty poor copy. Am mainly off work for the next few weeks so will see if I can dig it out.
The Melrose 9 second goal is on the centenary history DVD I think.
Seriously, though, thank you so much for these. As someone not yet born during this era this is fascinating stuff. I have the end of season reviews 88-90 but was desperately looking for footage of the first two years back in the first division so this is a real boon.
Thanks Off-it, I can't believe his mum chucked it out, she knew it was an important one even if it did have a W. Ham cover on it. One of us must have lent it out and never got it back.
Jimmy, i have a bundle of old vids if you want to borrow anything message me on here and i'll tell you what i have! I reckon i got most end of season round up video from 87 to about 96 plus some others!!
I dont know how to whisper anymore, so marchy get ya boy to message me on here.

Great memorys
I forgot you went!!
Cheers mate she passed away 7 years ago!!
Do you hear from the boys mentioned?
Thanks again for the videos - two great memories there.
Am I right in thinking we only entered the Soccer Six because the first round was on a Sunday and we were playing in Manchester the previous day?

I assume it was that game.
