he stayed here for a number of years without ever being first choice
maybe this is what is meant? He stayed here picking up a healthy pay-cheque when he arguably should have kick-started his career elsewhere, he turned down a perm move to Stoke which might even have seen him back in the PL.

  • A decent player, was lucky to come out of the youth team at the right time, with Rufus's injury, as we've let go other centre backs who were (IMHO) just as good, e.g. Primus, Michael Turner, Shittu,
  • Except Fry has now signed for Bradford.
Really?! Think he's better than that, wouldn't look out of place in most League One sides.

    Chronic knee injury apparently.
  • Good luck Jon.

Hope you get the gig. Gillingam's defence is pretty woeful.

After the other trials CAFC Twitter has announced he has joined Exeter

I'm hearing that former #cafc defender Jonathan Fortune has today joined Exeter City. Good luck to him (MW)

  • Just seen that. Hope it works out for him and he can stay fit
  • Good luck Jon. I hope he get's to play out his career in the pro game and is wiser for this sojourn on the sidelines.
  • Good luck Jon
  • Best of luck Jon. Hope he stays healthy for a spell.
  • Just been released by Barnet,he hadn't really featured for them since Davids arrived.

  • Incredible to think he's only 32.

Released by Exeter City and Barnet.

Made his debut at 18, 14 years later and he's only made about 200 league appearances (about 30 in the last 4 seasons).

Shows what serious injuries can do to a career.
  • Feel sorry for him.

Always did his best for us.

Same here Len, hope he gets something in football.
  • That's a real shame when you consider how many games he played in the Premiership and how young he still is.

Always a hero for that goal...

Too right , as i often remind my Palace supporting cousin!

  • Yep hero for taking away long term premier league football that Palace are still trying to achieve.

We might of fallen from grace soon after but we still had those many seasons in that division.

  • Would be nice if Charlton is able to offer him a match or some kind of a role. Of all the players of the modern era I'd say the ratio of what he gave to what he took was amongst the best.
  • Always marked Alan Shearer out of the game. Club legend purely for that Palace goal. Shame his career hasn't worked out.

The injuries have taken a massive toll, when you consider he was a PL squad player, and now isn't good enough for Barnet :-(
  • Great guy, great player and one of many to have it all taken away from him too soon.
Hope he acheives Rufus-like status within the club.

After Barnet, there doesn't seem anywhere for him to go.
He's been particularly unlucky ripping both achilles.

It's one of the nastiest injuries in football.
And finishes the career of many players early.

Unlucky, Jon. Wish you all the best for the future.
  • Be nice if we could at least get him to a fans forum for a few anecdotes, get Steve Jones along to sell a few pictures .. ok maybe not the latter part.
  • He will get a club in the Conference.

Or maybe, Bury (transfer embargo) or Pompey on a week to week deal.

What is the Steve Jones joke, i have missed out of interest, as i noticed him mentioned on another thread?

  • Played at the highest level and never looked out of place. Good luck Jon. Hope it works out for you.
  • Get yourself down to Park View road Jon and join the Wings promotion push
  • hopefully he has used his spare time wisely and done his coaching badges
  • If not Steve jones could make him some
  • He'll probably come back as a coach while Powell's still here
  • Responsible for one of my happiest moments at The Valley. As already mentioned, he kept some of the best premiership strikers quiet and gutted for him that injuries have plagued him throughout his career.

All the best in whatever you choose to do Jon
