Jon Fortune

Says on another thread that he has ruptured his Achilles and will be having an operation tomorrow. Now I wouldn't have kept him for next season anyway but I'm sure that the Club will now look after him anyway until he has recovered from this dreadful set back for him. All the best Jon and I hope you recover soon and hope that you will be able to continue your career wherever it may be.

  • Can only echo your sentiments.

Was from Matt Holland's twitter so I would have no doubt that it's spot on.

    All the best Jon.

Bad news for him.  As he is out of contract, unless we as a club are charitable, does that mean he will be responsible for his own recuperation.
  • Ireckon we will offer him a pay as you play contract, so we can help him recover without having to pay him.
  • Just hope Jon recovers from the op and can play again. Hopefully his insurance will pay his mortgage for him.
  • I'd think that's his career over.

I also believe he's out of contract now ie end of season

Would hope we help him out and get him recuperated but would be amazed if he played again - anywhere
  • Sad news, and I hope you recover quickly Jon and  good luck to you whatever the future may bring.

Sad , i know he's not been brilliant this season , but i think he has been carrying other injuries , still he did send the palace down , seems a lifetime ago!

    Get well soon Jon
  • Was pretty sure yesterday would be his last professional game before it kicked off, now i am pretty certain.

Jonathan Fortune will be sidelined for at least six months after undergoing surgery on a ruptured Achilles on Monday morning.

The defender, out of contract with the Addicks this summer, suffered
the problem during the first half of Saturday's 0-0 draw with Hartlepool
    United.

Chris Powell admitted afterwards that he feared the worst for the
centre-back, with a subsequent scan confirming Fortune had ruptured his
    Achilles.

Charlton head physiotherapist Erol Umut told the official website:
"As Jon went up for a header, he pushed off the ground with his leg and
    ruptured his Achilles.

"He had the operation on Monday morning and it went as well as can be expected.

"He'll be in plaster for two weeks and in a protective boot for a
further six weeks, before starting a rehabilitation programme. He's
likely to be out for a minimum of six months."

Fortune suffered the same problem to his other leg in his previous
spell with Charlton during a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace at The Valley
    in January 2009.

He left the Addicks that summer for Sheffield United, but returned at
the start of the current campaign, going on to make 20 first-team
    appearances in total.

Added Umut: "He's in good spirits, all things considered. He's had
the injury before and came back, so he'll be looking to do the same
    again."

  • JF mate you have been an important member of the CAFC family for a few decades and as such I wish you all the best

  • All the best, Jon - keep your spirits up.
  • I'm sorry his spell at Charlton has probably ended like this . I also hope we help him through rehab , but following that we should let him go . We need 4 CB's next season . Doc will still be with us and Dailly looks like he will be also .

Has Forch had a testimonial ? If not maybe next season we could do this .

After he has recovered I think he could still do a job for someone like Barnet or Dagenham maybe .

  • He sent the palarse down -  he lives forever !

    Get well soon JF

  • I hope it all works out well for Jon. I reckon he has a mountain to climb getting back to league football now.
  • I wish him well
I think he deserves more credit than he got from some of our fans
  • So both Achilles have now snapped at some point in the past 3 seasons, if he makes a recovery  I can't see a pro team taking a chance on him anyway. Shame, as I'm sure he's a nice guy and he's been here for 95% of his career, but he hasn't been great this season. He will be missed, but we may well be better off without him
  • Gutted for him.

I'm sure the club will look after him and give him some re-hab but I doubt he'll play professionally ever again. At no time this season has he looked match fit.

  • Shame for him, I think he'll probably continue his rehab with us just without being paid.
  • Very sad and a great shame.

Jon was a far better player than the shadow he became this season, largely as a result of his previous achilles injury.

Any youngsters who have only seen him this season take my word that once upon a time he was a damned fine player who was good enough to do an adequate job in the Premiership.

As a 30 year old centre back he should have been at his peak. Sadly that peak looks unlikely ever to come now.

The Jon Fortune of a few years back with two good achilles tendons would have been a real asset to us :-(

Good luck whatever the future holds Jon.

  • For someone to have Alan Shearer in their back pocket for a whole game and wind him up so much that he gets sent off shows he had something.

    Good luck to him.

  • Sad and the end of a career. Financially I'm sure he will be covered for the operation and initial rehab.
  • I remember that day WSS. Happy days indeed!
  • the big disgrace is that shearer had that red card rescinded ....

it was in front of me and shearer swung an elbow at him and the tv pictures were inconclusive so surely you go with the officials .... nope they let the northern monkey off ... ridiculous

  • Indeed oohahh - what does he need to do to get punished?  Kick a ginger person in the head or something.....?

He and Bobby Robson put the FA under pressure and they buckled, totally ridiculous.  The FA hung Jon out to dry
  • Shearer was a powerful man back then!
  • Biggest mistake Shearer made was not joining Man Utd for some medals which he regrets to this day.
  • Jon was a decent CB during our Prem years. I remember that game where Shearer got sent off. Probably Jons best game in a cafc shirt. I would imagine we will look after him in his recovery as he has been a good servant for the club and I'm sure he and Sir Chris have a good relationship. I doubt there will be any deal involved just helping him to get over his injury and back to full fitness or the best he can achieve..
  • Whilst I feel sorry for Fortune getting injured its part and parcel of football and that risk is one of the reasons footballers get paid so well. Personally I think he's made a lot of money and had a decent career including at some points earning premiership wages. I hope the club help him out so far as allowing him the opportunity to train back to fitness for free but I dont expect the club to spend any more money than his wages up until the end of his contract and not a penny beyond that.
