Onto next year!

One day last summer i was on the laptop and saw we sold Richardson to southampton. That was the moment i realized how bad it was as a whole financial situation and the big screen not working was a visual reminder of it all. and if richard murray didn't intervene where we could of ended up is a very scary thought. but we've went through a horrid season with not a lot to remember about it all. but it's gone now and the only thing's on my mind as a fan is transfers. who's coming in ( i'll list my opinions of who we could consider) and who's leaving. i don't think im the only one who's just happy were stable financially.

i know i am banging on but in summary

Im just glad were not in a plymouth situation and everyone ( at least twitter folk) are very optimistic for next year.
( slight omen brighton finished 13th last year under a first time manager who joined mid season then this year....)

and some players i'd consider looking at if i was in SCP's position

Higgs ( GK from leeds rumored to be let go on a free)
Donaldson ( Striker from crewe big quick strong 20+ goals of all types this year)
Danny Green ( Daggers quality right midfielder with a consistently good delivery and a hell of a free kick!)
Bessone ( been very consistent and if i am correct there's a deal to sign him in the loan clause?)
Parrett on loan again.
Stewart ( he run thing's again today. good leader and dictates every pass around him)
Pearce (Cb from notts county looks what we need strong and quick)

There's a short shortlist of who i think would fit us.

  • I'm with you Marriott110. Some people really still can't grasp just what a perilous position we were in, whereas now we have apparent stability. That's a start.

Next year simply MUST be better or there will be no excuses. But for now lets just be happy that the season is over and we've all got a good few weeks to recharge our batteries before we come back and do it all again.

  • Off-it that's exactly how I see it,

When charlton life was off air I looked at some other forums one especially that you know well, and I couldn't believe the shite I was reading, yes this season has turned into a no show but from where we were to where we are now is miles away .

I don't mean league position I mean as a club.

Chris needs time to get his own players his own pre season his own new start .

I looked around the ground today and looked at the players on the pitch, bar solly, waggy, harriot and semedo, bwp, I wouldn't keep anyone else.

I am intrigued to see who and how the summer goes one things for sure Chris has a huge job on his hands and I reckon he will do it.

For the first time in ages I am looking forward to the pre season
  • I wish I could share your optimism NLA, but we've had so many false dawns I can't get too enthusiastic.
  • Agree on all those players NLA bar Waggy? Hes been poor pretty much all season, he needs to go.
  • @Mike

Agree that he hasn't had the best season but I wouldn't get rid yet. He is still young and can improve. Keep him as back up for next year.
  • I think Waggy has done ok this season , he's one of only three players to reach double figures with ten goals

sadly I can't share your optimism sorry, SCP made a total balls up of what was a very promising situation, I'm not looking forward to anything
  • What Salad said.

God knows who we are going to sign in the summer.

I have no optimism at all. When Powell was appointed I said it would end in tears. I hope it doesnt but nothing suggests it wont. We are so far short as a squad it id frightening.

Dont care what anyone says we have been woeful for months and I see no scope for improvement unless we bring in 8-9 decent players.
  • agree with the two posts above. Don't think next season we will even have the enjoyment of a brief spell in the play offs.

Yeah Wagstaff has 10 goals but for months now he has been totally ineffective, like most of them.
  • Well lets all give up then eh? bloody miserable sods.

  • How on earth can anyone comment on next season with anything other than cautious optimism!!

Firstly, we are financially stable again. That should be enough for us right now or have we forgotten how bad it really got?
Secondly, we have a board who are investing behind the scenes and are about to give SCP funds to go and build a squad.

Did we really think we were going to narrowly avoid financial meltdown, change managers and playing style, put in top notch performances and walk the division instantly? It takes time and recent performances are showing glimpses of some good times again.

Patience is the word here I think.

agree with ya drawnablank it's key we wait. it's all about who powelly brings in, and if anyone knows what a Charlton player should be and stand for it's powelly!

    bring on august!
  • I'm willing to be patient, but my patience isn't infinite. If the players we start bringing in are the same old journeymen or promising but unproven lower-leaguers just on higher wages then I won't be impressed in the slightest. I'm glad we won't face financial catastrophe but if that was the be all and end all of the club's new ownership there's a number of people we could have sold it to. I'm awaiting evidence of what Murray saw in  Slater & Co. that he didn't in anyone else.
  • Think CP only has half a dozen or so games next season to show improvement.

Make no mistake, 23 league games, 6 wins 6 draws and 11 defeats is 24 points, which would see us in a relegation scrap. We need to bring the right players in which is going to easier said than done, especialy as if we have to compete with Championship clubs.

Going to be a intersting summer
  • I just read the notes from yesterday's program from slater i think he made it clear that he don't want a league 1 squad, he want's a championship standard squad. so im hoping he shows the money for it, i think chris powell has enough knowledge to pick the right players.
  • If BWP, Semedo and Stewart leave in the summer, no-one will want to come to the Valley. Racon and Judan Jenkinson are already off but we can live without them at this level.

We have no-one else (except Reid maybe) that any other league club would be interested in taking even on a free.

Worry about keeping the few good things we have before worrying about new blood.

Even we sign half the Barcelona side we wont beat anyone in L1 passing it side-ways to each other in our own half at snails pace.

  • Yannick Bolasie?

Danny Ward On Loan From Bolton, think he may want to play championship if Bolton let him go on loan again though.

@grumpyaddick with half the Barcelona side we'd have moved the ball quicker at the right times and found a way through.

QPR, Norwich, Brighton and Southampton all had that creative player or two, something we don't have. That player can make a big difference.
  • agree with grummyaddick we need to move the ball quicker ! thing is to many bad passes than they have to back track!!!
  • Anyone got any good news such as Francis and Mcoxo being out of contract?

  • Does anyone know when we can start signing players?
  • HOW DO WE KNOW RACON IS DEFINITELY OFF?
  • It's absolutely clear that the entire squad needs overhauling. Nine new players is for me a minimum. I want to see a goalkeeper, two centre backs a right back, three midfielders and two strikers. That would enhance what is worth salvaging from the existing players but in my view there are not too many and with the exception of BWP and perhaps Jackson I would hope that any players we do keep would not be automatic first choices. It seems to me that Slater and CP are well aware that significant changes are required and have in my view made all the right noises and I am quietly confident that they will deliver. The close season and the transfer speculation that goes with it are always exiting for football fans and I think that for Charlton supporters in particular it's going to be very interesting to see how the squad builds. Looking forward to next season already.

Can I also be the first to say that whoever our first signing is that he is crap ;0)
  • There is nothing wrong with keeping hold of the ball and knocking it about, trying to force the issue by hitting hopeful long balls or silly passes when nothing is on just gives away possession. At the moment, we can knock it about well and we have an out and out goal scorer but the problem is we have nothing creative to add a spark, fashion something and lay a chance on for BWP. For this I feel we need a really good creative midfielder and a creative striker who can also add in 15 goals a season.
Though saying all of this the priority has to be the defense. Looking at the squad, with the loans returning, players leaving and those that aren't up to scratch I'd say we need as much as twelve new players. I can't see us paying for that much quality and would expect the squad to maybe have six good signing additions along with Solly, Wagstaff, Semedo, Jackson and BWP to make the  first 11 and the rest compromise of Elliot, Dailly, Mambo, Youga, Harriott, McCormack, Tuna, Aniyinsah, Benson, two or three free transfers and a couple of loans.

  • Mambo and Tuna will be off, believe we will encourage McOxo to look elsewhere with a sweetener for him to leave. We should only sign Youga if he can prove his fitness and even then initially on a pay as you play deal, likewise Anyinsah.
  • Can I just point out that all this talk of rehauling the squad with championship players is nice and all, but what championship players will be willing to come and play under an inexperienced manager for a mid-table 3rd tier team?

You can have all the money in the land, but if you don't have anything else to offer them, then there won't be many who take us up on the offer, and after all the moaning we have had about money grabbing lazy footballers playing for us over the past few seasons, we may find ourselves in a situation where the entire squad is bought in on the size of their wages, not their talent.

I  would keep Elliot and Worner, but bring in a proper number 1 and tell Elliot to live in a gym over the summer.
I would keep Solly and Francis as I feel they offer different things to us on the right hand side
I would keep Dailly as a player coach, keep Llera because when he doesn't make a huge mistake (to be fair he's got better with this over the course of the season) he's our best defender, but I would add another 2 or 3 central defenders, especially a young pacy centre back to play alongside Llera.
I would monitor Youga over the summer, invite him back for pre season if he is fit and if he looks anything like the player he was, then I would sign him up in a heartbeat, and maybe give Bessone a contract as the cover.
I would re-sign Semedo and keep Jackson, and try to sign Stewart. I would then add a playmaker to the ranks, to feed the strikers more than just scraps. McCormack can go and live in a canal boat for all I care.
I would say to Reid 'thanks for the memories' and let him go, and offer Racon a new contract, albeit on much reduced terms, as he is more than good enough out on the left to be cover for JJ and central midfield too. I would also make Harriott work all summer long on his first touch, I know it was his first start and he's only 17, but some of his touches were going 15 feet in the air.
Waggy is good enough for backup on the right, but I would look into signing a proper crosser to whip balls in, he just can't do this consistently enough right now.
BWP, Benson and Anyinsah (when he's fit) are all good enough to be in the squad, but I would like to see a proper target man come in, an Iwelumo type player who can just batter defences and pull players around to create problems. Finally, I would like a proper speed merchant, just someone who can run full tilt at defences and get in behind, a player that you can bring on with 10 minutes to go to change a game.

So in an ideal world we are looking at 8 or 9 signings, at least 5 of those being starters all next season, the only problem is who can we actually bring in that is much better than the players we have now?
  • Was with you all the way Sam3110 until you mentioned Iwelumo - Bring back Abbott in that case!
  • I'd have Iwelumo back in an instant. He did a decent job for us and has improved imeasurably since he left us.

Him and BWP would be a great partnership.

Having said that the chances of it happening are 0% at best.
  • What like the wide open goal he missed for Scotland in a World Cup Qualifier? and being unable to get a regular start with Burnley hmmm?
  • I'd take Iwelumo if he was offered, you want someone who can hold the ball up and create a bit of mayhem in the box that BWP/Benson can feed on, he has a good work rate and would be right for us. As for the chance he missed for Scotland that was one of those things and a player who can't get a regular start at CCC level but still scores goals should do ok at our lower level.
