Post Match Comments: Oldham 0-0 Charlton

Just got home from the match.

For the first 30 minutes I thought we just shaded a poor game and we were starting to get our attack co-ordinated. Then Dailly got kicked in the head as tried to head a lowish ball, he immediately retaliated and kicked his opponent - red card no argument. After that Racon was replaced by Fortune and the rest of the 1st half was quiet even. After half time Oldham really went for it, WP retreated into the midfield leaving Benson up front. Both Mac & Fortune kept the attacks at bay, Solly was solid and Bessone was dodgey. The midfield became secondary defenders and Benson ran and ran but achieved little. It was a brave rearguard display with little skill as we kept giving the ball back to Oldham. Sullivan looked a better goalkeeper than either of ours except for his kicking which was poor. We didn't loose because Oldham were very poor in their shots and headers at goal.

A frustrating game but we didn't loose.

  • Sounds like we showed some fight which we may not have done a few weeks ago, so thats some progress
  • Oldham have only scored in 2 of their last 13 games or something I do believe..
  • wasn't our last 0-0 vs oldham too.
  • How did Stewart play today ?
  • Stewart was average, like most of them. His couple of corners were good, free kicks okish. Like the rest of then
he kept giving the ball away.
  • What was the atmosphere like , a pre season friendly ?

  • Pre season friendliest hold out hope of a season to come. This game was a nothing game by two very poor teams. There were very few Charlton fans, the younger element tried have to inject some passion but the rest were very quiet, except for me of course.

I thought you were the younger element, Lancs?

Blimey there are a lot of us old gits mature gentlemen on here
  • Perhaps we should form a clique of old gits

    Good thought!
  • To be honest, apart from Racon's 'one on one' where he had too much time, we did not look like scoring at all. Thought we battled and did well to hold out for the draw in the end. Sullivan looked very steady apart from the first few kicks. Not a great game, but it was never going to be. Nouble's £10K a week wages from West Ham should cover the cost of his shirt that he threw to the fan at the end of the game!
  • I saw Dailly's sending off on the TV. Considering the bloke put his boot in Dailly's face, studs first, (although probably an accident, a pub team player going for the ball). I have to say I do have some sympathy for Dailly, who then kicked out backwards at the bloke. It was a natural reaction, which wasn't planned & under the circumstances the ref could have let him off & given both players a yellow.

I'd be interested to know Paul, how can you have too much time? (I haven't seen the incident yet) I think of time as an asset, the more you have the better it is. Or is it a case of not enough composure?
  • One hundred and eighty three Charlton fans.

Or precisely 6 more than Southend took to Accrington Stanley on Tuesday for a longer even more meaningless fixture.

Good result considering, all roads definitely lead to winning the league at a canter next season :)

Stig - from where I was (albeit the other end) he had so much time that he took too many touches and I do feel that had he had less time, he probably would have done better. Too much time is not always an asset in these circumstances as we frequently see at this and higher levels. As you rightly say 'composure' was also an issue here.
  • the last match on the football league show for league one

Too much time can work against you, because instead of reacting instantly you can easily get caught in two minds - Kevin Lisbie Syndrome.

    1) When you go 1 on 1 with the keeper, if possible get as central as you can (which gives you 2 options: to go either side of the keeper - instead of at an angle, which gives you only one option).

    2) You get the keeper to commit himself and invariably he will.
Quickly make your mind up what you are going to do, be decisive and stick with that decision ....... as the keeper rushes out at you, treat him like you would running at any defender - drop a shoulder to sell the dummy, then accelerate past him. Roll ball firmly into empty net.

Okay, once in a while a keeper will make a lucky guess, like they sometimes do facing a penalty kick. But 4 out of 5 times, it should always be your goal.

I always used to elect to take the keeper on, rather than try to lob or shoot on the run - as it's much more difficult to keep balance, composure and measure the target, when an onrushing keeper is charging towards you..

Seen it this morning. The challenge by the no 9 on CD was an ugly challenge but in football these days you cannot lash out, it's violent conduct and it's a red card all day long. According to BBC the number 9 got a yellow and that was fully deserved for that challenge.

I agree, which is why I said the ref "could have let him off" .
  • My first reaction is that the Oldham bloke should have gone too. Not a lot different to Gordon Greer's red card in the Swindon play off match (he put his boot into someone's chest). Shouldn't be putting your foot head high (studs showing too).
  • Totally agree with Simonsen, Reid's foot was high and his lunge at the ball was reckless. Dailly should hasve given him another dig before he left the pitch .. after all his season is over (for you .. ze season is ovfer). Oldham are an aggressive, nasty side but what can you expect from a Dick off managed outfit
  • I've only seen the highlights but from what I've seen the Oldham player really should have gone, BUT the fact he didn't doesn't give Dailly carte blanche to get 'justice'/revenge himself. I have to admit surprise at Dailly's reaction, I would have thought he would have known better. If we were in a real position to challenge for playoffs or in serious threat of relegation (perish the thought) then I could understand there was pressure but frankly it was a nothing game.
  • Having seen the highlights, am really surprised that the Oldham player didn't also receive a red card.
Dangerous play studs first, with the head high kick, is serious foul play.

In the Swindon playoff game at The Valley last season, the Swindon defender was rightly given a straight red for an offence that was not even as dangerous as that one committed by Rueben Reid.
