the mercurial morts........ did us beating chelsea that night help put millwall top???[/quote]

They beat Norwich to go top, i think.

How genius was the genius? There should be a morts video you know!
  • The 3-0 at Palarse that was ealy in the season, didn't we go top or joint top? Williams and Mortimer scored?
  • [cite]Posted By: Ketman[/cite]A couple of Chelsea games spring to mind. The 1-1 draw at the Bridge on the last day of the season when if we lost we were down if they drew or lost they were down. Leaburn was knocked out by Steve Wicks, massive fight in the Charlton end with Chelsea must have been best part of 5,000 Charlton there that day. Being kept behind for about an hour after the game as Chelsea fans went on rampage outside. Also our Goal was a spawny deflection from Paul Miller, although their goal was a penalty that was miles outside the box.

Another is a 2-2 draw on Boxing day I think at Selhurst park, think this started an end of season run for us to safety under Lennie, 0-2 down two late goals scaping us a draw.

Of course there is also the 3-0 at Selhurst with Willo getting a couple & Morts screamer near the end.

i had the video of this game ketters and you could clearly see both of our dads sporting mullits everytime there was a goal kick.
  • [cite]Posted By: Ormiston Addick[/cite]It has GOT to be the 1-1 at the Bridge in 1988. Absolutely fantastic Charlton performance that day in a really hostile atmosphere when Chelsea were convinced they were going to put us into the relegation play-offs instead of them.
Yep, I remember it well. I was only 14 or 15 at the time, and had to twist my parents' arms a bit to take me to the game (and there was no way they were letting me go on my own). Given the Chelsea fans' reputation we were a bit worried when they scored and a bunch of them started celebrating at the front of our section, but then the Charlton hardnuts unsurprisingly took exception to this, and appeared to be trying to eject them from the end by chucking them over the fence. And then the police steamed in, escorted the Chelsea fans into one of the home sections, and started hauling out some of the Charlton fans too.
My brother and I went back to Chelsea a couple of weeks later to buy the video of the game from their club shop! We must have watched it dozens of times and always had out hearts in our mouths late on when that little twat Colin West gets brought down by Shirtliff in the box and the ref somehow waved play on.
Nah, it wasn't Shirtliff, it was Paul Miller. I'm amazed we didn't wear the tape out playing it through in slo-mo going "look, he whacked him in the face", "Are you sure?" etc etc.
On the video you don't see Wicks deck Leaburn but you do see big Carl get up and offer him out for about three minutes whilst Jimmy Hendry the physio and a couple of other players restrain him, including the diminuative Garth Crooks. Fair play to Leaburn though, he was absolutely steaming but even as a 19 year-old kid he was enough of a pro to not go after that animal Wicks and got back on to finish the game and get in some great defensive headers from corners and finish the game.
That's one of my favourite Charlton comedy moments. Carlo being even more Bambi-esque than usual, but still wanting to fight Wicks despite the fact he can hardly stand when he's only just come round, and Jimmy Hendry being tiny in comparison.
Also, when you watch the video closely there looks like there was a massive ruck after the game in the tunnel with that donkey Joe McLaughlin clearly throwing punches!!!
And then we signed him for lots of money the following year. The weirdest thing about the whole day was coming out of the ground after the game (having been kept in for at least half an hour) and seeing that there was no-one on the streets. It was like a ghost town walking back to the coaches, and we were kind of half expecting to turn a corner only to discover shedloads of Chelsea fans lying in wait, and having to make a run for it, but luckily that didn't happen. Given the running battles that took place at the playoff game against Boro a few weeks later, I think we got off quite lightly.
  • Ali Wibble - You're right, it was Miller now that I come to think about it. In fact, I am not sure Shirtliff even played in that game....

That row when Durie scored the penalty took place all around where my brother and I were standing, we were only 15 and we crapped ourselved!!!

A mate of mine who knew Big Carl well told us that Carl was well up for squaring the ledger with Steve Wicks after the game but that Wicks, being the coward that he clearly was, did not want to know about it and would not come out of the Chelsea dressing rooms to meet the marauding Carlo.

I remember seeing the carnage from the Chelsea-Boro game a few weeks later and being so relieved it was not us.

I reckon the St Andrews game against Leeds would have been the only game more hostile than that Chelsea game in the last 30 years.
  • The 4 - 2 game at the Valley was an absolutely fantastic performance by us. Remember Parker running the show against Lampard/Cole. Think Konchesky came on as sub in his first game back after his loan spell at Spurs. He got a bit of stick for a couple of minutes until he battered one of their players.

Also remember going to Chelsea for a FA cup game in the 90's. Genuinely believed we could get something from the game even though we were a divison below them. After 20 mins we were 2 down and eventually lost 3-0.

Vaguely remember a floodlit game at the Valley when Chelsea were top during the time of Dixon/Speedie etc. We drew 1-1 that day.
  • Not a classic game but the 1-0 victory at SB when Lisbie fell over and got a free kick from which we scored in the 89th minute brilliant piece of mugging

  • What a fantastic night that was! Bryan Hughes was never the most popular player for us, but he stepped up to the plate that night. I'll always respect him for that.
  • I'd have Bryan Hughes back now (p*ssing about in League Two I believe).
