Memorable past encounters with Chelsea

For some reason I always think back to a game at Stamford Bridge in the 70's. I think it was a Boxing Day game. I remember that we won 3-2 and that Derek Hales scored, but I cannot remember too many other details. I just remember feeling so scared as I celebrated our winning goal and then realising that I was surrounded by Chelsea supporters!! Needless to say I legged it as fast as I could before I got thumped.

Can anybody else remember some more about this particular game?

I was pretty young at the time and can't really remember it. Remind me LTGTR?
  • although recent, the 4-2 Boxing Day win was probably the best i have ever seen Charlton play.
  • Has to be the 4-2 game on Boxing day 2003. Parker was immense that day, little did we know that it would ultimately be the performance that inspired the Russian to go after him.

As others have suggested on here, I honestly believe that if you wanted to pick a single moment where the slid started, it was probably following that game.

red pete - its the scene where one hapless kop comes running from one direction and the other hapless kop comes running from the other direction and they run into each other and the hero suddenly spots the ball laying there all on its lonesome and decides to trot over, collect it, run around the two prone kops and slot it into the back of the net...

I remember the tube train pulling into the Embankment Station after the match and there were 100's of Chelsea waiting for us. Needless to say, we didn't get off the train.

I presume that Killer was the hero? Now you mention it, I do have some distant memories stirring in the depths of my brain!!

I seem to recall that we employed the 'near-post flick-on' from corners that day and scored two goals. Phil Warman to Killer...
  • Was this the game where we went 2-0 up, only for Chelsea to pull it back to 2-2 before we got a fairly late winner?? God, it really is dangerous to start prodding old memories isn't it?
  • A couple of Chelsea games spring to mind. The 1-1 draw at the Bridge on the last day of the season when if we lost we were down if they drew or lost they were down. Leaburn was knocked out by Steve Wicks, massive fight in the Charlton end with Chelsea must have been best part of 5,000 Charlton there that day. Being kept behind for about an hour after the game as Chelsea fans went on rampage outside. Also our Goal was a spawny deflection from Paul Miller, although their goal was a penalty that was miles outside the box.

Another is a 2-2 draw on Boxing day I think at Selhurst park, think this started an end of season run for us to safety under Lennie, 0-2 down two late goals scaping us a draw.

Of course there is also the 3-0 at Selhurst with Willo getting a couple & Morts screamer near the end.

  • i remember the first time i went to chelsea v charlton.
they had a stand with no roof, and the away fans sat and got spat on by the chelsea fans above.
we were 1 up and sasa illic got knocked out by a rufus/casiraghi knee and was carried off and the fans threw coins at him. chelsea went on to win 2-1 and my chelsea supporting uncle said "we play badly and still win"

    hated them ever since.
  • I remember an early eighties game over there which they dominated yet we escaped with a 2-2 thanks to Paul Walsh.

The 4-2 has to be up there or going back a bit the 4-0 in the seventies when they torched The Valley Club

i remember a similar story, at westham away! when illic got stretchered off, and west ham fans threw stuff at him! we won 1-0 that day!
  • First game I went to where Chelsea were the opponents was in April 01 when BArts scored his first away goal.

I foudn the setting totally underwhelming. Crap View, fight outside......

However there was our friend Ms Holes.

This was first day I had first taste of that Legless LADDER pub. That was where Stunner sang out loud "Can you hear the Chelsea sing". Place jammed pack of full of Headhunters probably.

Ahh yes went to The bridge later that year - last minute Lisbie goal?

    Quality evening.

    Cheers Medders.
  • We beat them 5-2 at the Valley in the early 80s Chelsea fans were all over the place as usual, was in the clock bit another one where we had to fight for our lives!some Chelsea twat done me over the head with his brolly!copper was gong to nick him but i said leave it !the mug said cheers mate!during the interval i bought a meat pie went back to where he was standing and stuffed it in his face then well i better not say
  • CAFC 3-0 CFC Selhurst when Mortimer scored a left foot cracker, night game, superb win.

the mercurial morts........ did us beating chelsea that night help put millwall top???
  • I was in the Chelsea end and was jumped on by stewards at the last minute lisbie goal who were "escorting me out for my own safety" god bloody job they did...

the 3-0 Williams got a great goal as well.

Three other things about that game really wound be up:
    1. Brian Laudrup was offside at least 17 times without the assistant raising his flag
    2. Micheal Duberry playing basket ball in his own box less than 10 yards from the ref and we didn't get a pen
    3. Some poxy steward who couldn't have been more than 19 and 10st threatening to chuck me and my mate out for foul and abusive language (mostly directed at the officials after said offsides and penalty claim)
  • hey randy andy, i nearly got chucked out of the 'bridge' when we were there when they picked up their first prem trophy and the soppy ref gave the dodgy pen! The stewards at chelsea are mugs!

The tube we were on was, unbeknown to us, already full of Chelsea. In the end someone pulled the communication cord before we left the platform and we manged to get away without too many bruises. Not a lot of fun though!

Sorry Tavern, but the image of you stuffing a pie in his face has cracked me up. Top draw mate!

He's a nasty bastard that Tavern , the bloke was a vegetarian as well

Now that was maybe the best game ever to be seen at Shithouse Park ...
  • The 1-1 game when we needed draw to stay up.They got a penalty and there were about 30 of them in our end and started to celebrate. No one did anything until they scored, the they got battered. Can't remember being kept behind though that day.
  • Which game was it when they burnt valley club down.

I was at that game, took an age to get home. Funny though!
  • I think the 4-0 game was 1976.I think we beat Spurs at The Valley 4-1 in 1975 and Chelsea 4-0 in 1976.

The Chelsea fans set a number of fires in the Covered end and I remember them passing paper down to add to the flames. They also had a fire going at the South End, which was an uncovered terrace at the time. They wrecked The Valley Club and somehow managed to demolish the turnstiles in Harvey Gardens.

I was about 14 at the time and usually stood at the back of The Covered End ,but was on the East Terrace as Chelsea had taken it.

I also remember the Spurs game, when Spurs had taken The Covered End.There were rumours all week at school that Millwall were going to turn up and they did.

15 minutes into the first half about 12 Millwall stormed approx 8,000 Spurs in The Covered End and were taking them out like something from "Sharpe".I even remember one Spurs supporter being stretchered off in front of the goal while the game was going on.

The off pitch entertainment has changed a lot these days.
  • remember that i never seen as many police dogs in my life they kept coming out of the tunnel for about 10 mins
  • It has GOT to be the 1-1 at the Bridge in 1988. Absolutely fantastic Charlton performance that day in a really hostile atmosphere when Chelsea were convinced they were going to put us into the relegation play-offs instead of them.
My brother and I went back to Chelsea a couple of weeks later to buy the video of the game from their club shop! We must have watched it dozens of times and always had out hearts in our mouths late on when that little twat Colin West gets brought down by Shirtliff in the box and the ref somehow waved play on.
On the video you don't see Wicks deck Leaburn but you do see big Carl get up and offer him out for about three minutes whilst Jimmy Hendry the physio and a couple of other players restrain him, including the diminuative Garth Crooks. Fair play to Leaburn though, he was absolutely steaming but even as a 19 year-old kid he was enough of a pro to not go after that animal Wicks and got back on to finish the game and get in some great defensive headers from corners and finish the game.
Also, when you watch the video closely there looks like there was a massive ruck after the game in the tunnel with that donkey Joe McLaughlin clearly throwing punches!!!
