For those who support Powell

I'm sick of seeing all the negative threads on the man, and I just want to tip the scales back in his favour a little.

The fella has a hard task, I'm sure the players respected and liked Parky, and with his sacking by the new owners, the board saying they dont see promotion as the goal this season, the main challenge for them is to change the ethos of the club, the will to perform has gone.

With the talk of a cash injection for new players next season the players may feel they wont be around next season, and therefore dont really give a toss.

From what I 've read, Chris has tried to change the football style, it seems that the players are not able to fathom it, or do not wish to, and results and performances have shown this.

We do not see what happens on the training ground, nor what powell says in the change rooms.

We've had worse managers, Parky was at the helm for a record numbeer of winless games at the beginning of his tenure, Dowie was useless, as was Reed.

So if you believe in him, and the board turn the club around, let's hear from you.

Negative posters need not reply.

  • I support him. Sacking our managers got us in this mess, let's not do it again. Powell needs to learn fast get a plan and stick to it.
  • well said
  • Powell cannot be judged yet. He inherited a squad of poor quality players, Elliot, Francis, Fry, McCack, Racon, Sodje, And Benson. For good passing football you need better players. Give Powell time to bring in some players of his own. The man is quality!
  • I will always support the Charlton manager cos they are managing CHARLTON and we all want all Charlton managers to do well
SCP is in the hotseat and good luck to him he's gonna need it
Real time to judge him is november then we'll have a good idea

    This
  • Leave Powell alone,I dont think its his fault, whoever has let so many players be out of contract in the summer, telling everyone that there will be changes in playing staff in the summer is to blame.

Be honest would you be trying if you knew you would be out of a job
  • I wish CP nothing but the best.

This appt though was made with heart & not the head

Or woith the PR head. The board may be the new board but their knee jerk reaction only hours after taking over is why we are where we are. The chain events following that decision is no different to the ones that were made when curbs left.
  • Surprised to read this as you wasn't a fan of his appointment. I don't envy the man, he is starting to take on a beleaguered look. Not being negative, just realistic when I say it's getting harder to support an entity that appears to have given up, I'm surprised someone didn't produce a white flag yesterday at the final whistle. The man isn't going to walk and the owners won't sack him, so we will have to sit through more shit until this season finishes. Meanwhile we will continue to hemaorage (sp) support. Very sad.

This are genuine questions, not a dig.

What should the contingency plan be if Powell brings in many new players in the summer and by November it is clear that he can't get them to win games?

Should the board hold off spending all the money they have so that they have some money to give any new manager, or do we go for bust and let Powell blow our whole budget in the hope that he is, after all, the great manager that we all hope he is?

We have, after all, only just got rid of some of the players Pardew riddled us with when he was given 'full support' in the transfer window.

  • we will stay up im sure, but we cant keep getting rid of managers ok its all gone pear shaped but the squad is shite and powelly is still cutting his teeth in the job , so i reckon he should be given a chance to build a squad he believes will take the club forward , which will mean a lot of outgoings in the summer ,and hopefully the board will back him with money to bring players in ,so with some new players and some of our younger players coming through hopefully powelly will turn out to be a success?

It's the need for the word 'hopefully' that worries me.
  • I saw someone metnioned they had words with Powell by the coach. Hope they werent abusive... that sort of thing would really upset.

God i hope he turns it around and goes on to be the best manager ever.
  • We will be successful if we have a management team AND players who want to achieve things WITH Charlton - rather that using us as a stepping stone.

This was true of Curbs/Gritty and was probably true about Parky - trying to get his career back on track under Pards after a few setbacks.

With CP / AD, we now have the foundations of building up the club again, and need to find players who want to achieve things with us.

Jackson is a good example, and for me, he should be skipper next year. Wagstaff is another - but he needs quality coaching to improve his all round game.
Solly, Fry and Mambo are all good prospects.
Francis - is only a maybe, and so is Reid,
Stavrinou, Jenkinson and Tuna don't exactly set the place on fire.

Several will go - based on age, contracts, or just simply not doing it for us :
Dailly, Docherty, Semedo, Racon, Llera, Benson, Anyinsah, Fortune, McCormack, Youga.

    As for keepers:
Elliot is not improving and Worner couldn't catch a cold.

BWP scores goals in this division and we need him for the time being.

So as you can see, we have a big rebuilding job to do and decent replacement players don't all come along at the same time.
After defeat by Exeter, you could see that we just don't have the quality to give teams a tough game.

We should stay with CP now because he fits the profile of a manager that has brought us success in the past, and another change of boss sends out a bad message.
Brighton and the spanners both got out of L1 by appointing a decent boss and finding cheap or free, ambitious players.

Our fans have to grit our teeth and admit that we are not a big club, and we won't even be a big scalp for teams in this division next year.
  • In the short term the most important thing is to gain another couple of wins to ensure safety. It's really hard to make a judgment on CP's managerial abilities because of the limited players he has inherited and the injuries to some of the key players. He should have done better and has made some poor decisions, but that could be put down to inexperience or trying too hard to impose his style on players who are either unwilling or incapable of carrying out his instructions.
But we know that he is Charlton through and through and is suffering as we are. We cannot and must not desert him in his hour of need. Curbs had a worse run than this and we stuck by him. Changing managers again will acheive nothing. He's one of us and I can't wait to see that smile back on his face again.
  • This is a difficult and worrying situation we find ourselves in currently. After all the hype of CP's appointment, many people were then saying (myself included) that we hoped it works out for him and although it is a 'gamble' he is a Charlton man through and through......and for the first 4 games (albeit with some luck) we were happy with the results and the gamble was paying off. Now after having to deal with a string of injuries to some of the better players in the squad, losing our 2nd top scorer to a 4 game suspension and even having a loanee goalkeeper recalled in just 7 days we now find ourselves in an extremely bad run - to say the least!!
However to change managers again now would not be the sensible option......we need to give CP his opportunity to manage his team....a team he has put together to play football the way he wants to play it....it is quite clear that many of the current squad are not up to it, be that because of lack of ability or passion for the style of play....I dont know, but CP, it would appear, doesnt want to pay 'hoof-ball', something we were complining about under Mr Parkinson.....so he is trying to change it.

We have a new board who stated from the start that promotion this season would be a 'bonus' not an absolute requirement and now, it would appear, have also intimated (although whether this is true or not I dont know) that there will be a big change of players this coming summer, now what that actually means we can only wait and see, but we will see in just a few months.

The need however is for CP to ensure we are not in a relegation fight between now and the end of the season, and to that end, he may have to forego his 'style' of play and let our current squad play to its strengths (how ever low they maybe), and hope to get Jacko, Anyinsah and Doc back in the team asap.
We have 11 games to go, we are 9 points above the dreaded relegation places with games in hand, the play-offs are gone, so lets stick with CP hope that our better players come back sooner rather than later, and the squad find the 'spirit and fight' to grind out 3 or 4 wins to ensure safety.
Let CP rebuild the team in the summer and see what next season brings, you never know we could be pleasantly surprised......if not...then the time to judge CP will be Nov/Dec next season, but for now lets give him our support from near or far.....everyone in any walk of life deserves time to work in their style and with their team.....lets see what he can do!
  • I wonder what we would be saying now if Eddie Howe had accepted the job and we had gone on this run of 4-1-7, how many saying wait till November would be saying the same. CPis one of our own,but he still needs to be judged by what is reasonable. I don't want him out but if this run continues when do we say enough is enough!?
  • [quote][cite]Posted By: Mendonca In Asdas[/cite]Summer 2012[/quote]

Not sure those spitting abuse at CP and the players yesterday will agree, for what its worth summer 2011
  • With him 100%. Poor, paper thin squad that has lost the ability to fight for a result. Is that the contract issue I wonder? This summer will be a very busy time, I would be surprised if we started next season with more than 2 of the current starting line up.

  • Also think the contract issue is having an impact - it would on me! Yes a difficult time - but I'm behind him all the way. This year now is about survival in this poor league. Only need another 3-4 points then maybe we can relax and CP can experiment a bit with a few of the youngsters as it is obvious most of the current "1st team" are not bothered. Think a re-build over the summer, some good pre-season and we'll fight for promotion (just like Brighton with Poyet) next season. Chris needs more time and the crowd behind him....difficult as that can be sometimes....
  • [cite]Posted By: Valiantphil[/cite]Stavrinou, Jenkinson and Tuna don't exactly set the place on fire.

Jenkinson ? Are you mad mate. He's the only reason my sanity has stayed intact over the last month or so. Whilst we have players like Jenks, Solly, Cousins, Harriott coming through there is hope. And Clubs like Arsenal don't keep tabs on players like Jenkinson if they are no good.
  • I think powells biggest mistake is not appointing an experienced number two . A John Gorman / Lenny Lawrence type who he can rely on for advice. Having your mate as number two is not the right move and Dyer maybe the reason why we have struggled . ( apart from the players being shite)
  • The performances were getting worse and worse before CP's appointment. His critics seem to have forgotten that we were played off the park by Walsall (then bottom), Swindon, Notts County (though we did manage to rob them) under PP. We were in a false position with a very poor squad, which he had no time to improve significantly. I've been trying to be fair to these players but, yes, they are the worst Charlton squad in my 42 years of supporting the club.

I was not in the Parky out camp because I recognised that he'd been given the unenviable task of managing decline, and I am definitely of the view that CP deserves our full support. I don't think there's much he can do this season with the materials at his disposal, so he deserves a proper crack at it next year.
  • Rome wasn't built in a day. Sacking CP now would push us up to a new level of lunacy and damage the club yet further.

We just have to hope that some of the wastes of space currently wearing red shirts have enough pride to ensure that we get the points necessary for our survival.
  • I want Powell to succeed. I don't want to add to the pressure by making comments about, "how long I'd give him". It's a difficult job, he's inherited a rotten squad and it's going to take time to turn around. Good luck to him.
  • Need our best players back from injuries fast. Will see better results for sure. Give CP the time he deserves to mould his own squad.
  • He needs time and his own squad not the shite he inherited. Needs to be backed not sacked. Those wishing for him gone need to realise the rot was there already.
  • Sorry, I know this is supposed to be a positive thread for Powell, but I just don't buy into all this crap that he inherited a poor squad and the players are not trying because they are out of contract this summer.

When he came in, we were fourth and comfortably in the play off positions. I know there were some very poor performances and results prior to this, but in this league the lower teams are always likely to turn someone over now and again. 90% of all the managers in this league would have loved to have the Charlton squad at the start of the season!

As for the players not trying because they are out of contract at the end of the season, well this is the lamest excuse I've heard by those trying to defend Powell. If you are a professional footballer and out of contact soon, you should be working your backside off to make sure that you earn another one in the summer ffs!

I don't pretend to know the answer to the mess we are in right now, maybe we should give him time to turn it around, but please don't use daft excuses for the man we have all hero worshipped.
  • Just checked that comparison to Poyet someone mentioned not long ago.

    Powell's first 12 games - 4 wins 1 draw 7 defeats
    Poyet - 4 wins 2 draws 6 defeats

Not saying that means Powell will definitely turn things around but it shows what can be done. You don't need to spend millions and sign a new squad to go from average side to a very good one at this level.
