Charlton players who have proved you wrong

  • Carl Leaburn... sort of.
  • Better Than I thought;
    John Robinson. Never thought he'd make a decent player let alone one who had so much influence in our promotion year 1998. Was very poor when we first signed him and not just because he was replacing Robert Lee at right-midfield. But the way things turned out, he represented incredible value for £75,000.

    Worse Than I Thought;
    Loads.
  • Disappointments
    Rommedhal
    JFH
    Lee Cook
    Jesper Blomqvist
    Gary Doherty (maybe controversial but expected more from him this year)
    Scott Sinclair
    Neil Redfern

    Better than Expected
    Mark Kinsella (I didn't expect a lot when he first signed, but boy what a legend of a player)
    Deon Burton (definitely, wasn't expecting a lot at all but was really committed)
    Danny Butterfield (expected another Agent from Palace there)
    Jay McEverley (Didn't expect a lot but I liked this guy. Played really well for us until he got injured)
    Keith Jones (he may have passed sideways all the time but i still loved it when he marked a revived Gazza out the game against Boro)

  • I think most people have listed my ones by now, so I'll just mention one player that proved me wrong twice; Jerome Thomas.

    When he first came he was absolutely terrible. In his first game, I'm not even sure if he touched the ball. He came on as a sub and within 15 minutes my son was moaning that he should be subbed himself. I found it very hard to disagree. Over the next few games he got steadily better to the point where I was thinking that maybe one day he could play for England. And then he seemed to deteriorate. I think he may have had the odd knock or two, I can't really remember but I do know that he never seemed to recapture that form that he showed (once or twice).
  • The Aizlewood two-finger game was at home to Oldham in 1983. He was having a mare and etting stick (it was a dreadful match) and then he scored with a powerful header and two-fingered the East Terrace. He seemed to get better for Charlton after that.

    PS: We won 2-1 v Oldham. I think a young and very promising Mark Ward scored from distance for Oldham.

    Steve Gritt was brought in originally as a striker and was not very good at all - he simply got better as the years went on and he found a role in the middle of the park or deputising at right back - along with Steve Brown he epitomises the limited player who deserved his place in the team by knowing his limitations, realising its a team effort and always giving 100%
  • i thought the aizlewood two finger was shrewsbury at home and he got 2 goals and we won 4-2

    lol unfortunately i'm still waiting !
  • Ooah....Shrews at home on a boiling hot end of season day in 1984, we lost 2-4, Aizlewood got the 2nd consolation with a great volley. The two finger game was definitely v Oldham earlier that season. Aizlewood header, Hales penalty(I think) and a late goal for Oldham.
  • Used to think Jonny Robinson was pretty average at Upton Park when we first signed him but went on to become a CAFC legend.

    Guess the fact he was the cut-price replacement for Robert Lee was part of the reason for my initially unflattering assessment.
