  • Waggy is the new Rommedahl .........with a better attitude and engine, but IMO would benefit if played in the same role that the Denmark international team very effectively got the best from Rommedahl.

In that Denmark team Rommedahl wasn't played wide hugging the touchline on the wing, but given a bit of a free role to link between the midfield and the front two. Obviously he was playing with quality players, with the intelligence to draw defenders and create the spaces for Rommedahl to exploit with his speed ........ but Waggy has time and time proved his value when exploiting space in the same way.

There you are, Waggy is the new Rommedahl.

    ;o)
  • The thing with Waggy is that he can appear to do nothing all ame and then score or make a major contribution. The problem for him at the moment is that we possibly can't affford to take that risk.

Personally I would always want to have him involved and take my chances.

He's definitely one of our better players. Him, Jenkinson, Jackson and Elliot would probably be the only one's i 'd look to keep.
  • I'd keep him - there is a role for him - just not sure we have found it. Also his age has to be taken into account and he could get better. As people have pointed out -it took Robbo a while and there are similarities.
  • Think pretty highly of him tbh. Still young and learning.

Being the same age group as him and both living in tunbridge wells, we have a couple of mutual acquitances and i've heard he's a top lad with a great attitude to his development and to charlton. Gotta keep players like that around tbh
  • According to LL's latest statbank, Wagstaff has 7 goals and 6 assists so far this season. If some of the other midfielders in the squad had contributed half that amount, we'd be in a much better position in the table. He's probably on less money as well.

Plus a couple more goals in the Cups ..... I reckon 9 goals in total, so far this season.
Not bad for a relative novice, playing from midfield.
  • i like waggy runs all day long scores goals(goal he scored from bad back-pass v plymouth was all down to him! noboby else in this team would have go that!! he made them go back towards goal! winger not his pos though! in behind striker better pos for him or as a lifer already said cenre mid that would stop team out passing us in midfield!! :)
  • If he could improve his passing a little, certainly centre midfiled would be a possibility as he has the engine - he has pace and knows where the goal is.
  • Waggy is good at keeping the ball but lacks the ability to take a player on and deliver a cross. Unfortunately, he doesn't have the ability run/change a game.
The problem managers tend to have with him, which he has proved again this season, he seems to be in the right place at the right time to score a vital goal!
I don't know the stats but I reckon he is one of our top goal scorers behind Jackson and BWP.
In my opinion, Charlton have never had a decent winger since the days of Jerome Thomas, Andy Reid and Darren Ambrose!

  • I wouldn't go as far as saying Ambrose was a good winger - to me he never enjoyed playing out wide and has been transformed at Palace by being given a more central role. Reid was also far more than just a winger and was equally if not more effective playing in acentral position. As for Thomas no matter how good he was early on I simply cannot shake off the memory of his appalling "can't be bothered" attitude in the Championship. Now Colin Powell there was a great winger.....
  • I think Wagstaff is only playing bad is becuase of Francis. Also when he played attacking midfield against spurs and plymouth, he was the best player on the pitch. Francis is better going forward, so it leaves Wagstaff for nothing. As he showed against Orient, he is a very good player, he just needs more of the ball.
  • I think him and Francis play pretty well together actually in the opposition's half.

Agree with WSS, that is very harsh on Francis. Waggy's form has fluctuated throughout the season, suggesting that it being Francis at right back has little to do with it.
  • Robbo was never a great crosser either. On the right he couldn't beat his man and on the left he had to check back onto his right to cross, but invariably didn't put enough whip on it so easy for defenders. We had tall strikers in those days as well, Leaburn, Bright, Jones, Svennson etc. His strengths were coming inside, being elusive and either putting someone in or buying a foul. His attitude won over the fans as much as his football.

Waggy has Joe, BWP, Martin and Ecclestone all several inches short of 6ft and Abbott was labouring around the centre circle when Scott was ready to cross. Didn't get many decent passes from SF to put him in either.
  • francis delivers/tries to deliver more crosses than waggy
