Worst central midfield ever?!

edited March 2011 in General Charlton
Honestly I no the whole team isn't great but games are won and lost in cm and semedo, racon and McCormack can not attack or defend, we are kidding our selves if we think otherwise. Need a box to box player who wants to win like I.e Bailey, kinsella, a young holland,Parker

  • I agree with that. Need someone to take control in Midfield and run the game. Have no leader in midfield at the moment.
  • It's a problem but a very big one if we keep trying to play passing football and experimenting with 4-3-3.
  • i would like semedo and racon gone
  • Agree I think they have gone stale, look what one signing can do Bullard at Ipswich the bloke is well up for it we just have plodders the game passes them
  • The problem is deep defence that stretches midfield. 5 yard passes, watch Barcelona.
  • You think we should play like Barcelona?

I would like the entire squad gone

You're not far off here. There is such a huge gap between our defence and midfield that it is impossible to take control of games.
  • I'm off for a shower , i stink.
  • love Semedo but he is a big part of the problem. Would'nt bother me one iota if he and Racon departed in the summer.

Had this feeling about Semedo for a while, love the guy but he really isn't that good and struggles sometimes to play a simple pass!

More suited to play in defence imo.
  • Ive said it before , it's no coincidence that our meteoric drop through the football league has been while Semedo and Racon have been at the club.

And petrol prices have gone up, and bears sh*t in the woods.

I really think scape-goating them is not right. Tonight, as in many games recently, we have been undone by poor defending.

My own view is that its confidence which has been our downfall. None of our managers have been able to address that.

Since CP has taken over, and, to be honest a chunk of games before that, we have started them so slowly. That is symptomatic of a lack of confidence. With lack of pace in the centre of defence, we come out already on the back foot. Teams know this and they exploit it. They press us high up the pitch when we are in possession. They make it difficult for us to do anything other than hoof it. When they have the ball, we immediately drop off and invite them on to us. We create space in front of us and that allows them to play the ball around.

I remember this happening against Doncaster three seasons ago and still it happens.

It is primarily down to lack of confidence.

Bing, in fairness, if you don't have confidence after four straight wins, how are you ever going to gain confidence?
The problem is weakness in key areas, primarily the midfield. Racon always looks a quality player to me, but one goal and one assist all season is not good enough, same with Semedo. The midfield has to contribute more in order for a team to function well. Semedo would be fantastic with Parker or Bowyer in front of him, but none of our midfielders pose any threat to the oppositions goal. Until we address this problem we are going nowhere.
  • How can People blame cm when the balls played over them constantly?
  • so semedo has gone from the only bright light to the problem? Marvellous I do like to keep up to the latest on the scape goats
  • McCormack is so ineffective. We could do a lot worse than starting Stavrinou on Saturday.

I think you need to look at a lot of the other threads on here re Semedo, any one who thinks he is the answer to the problem or a bright light is dreaming.

He has been made a cult figure due to the song but in fairness offers very little in terms of assists or goals, as Queensland said this is not good enough.
  • Defensive midfielder not scoring or creating goals. What a scandal. Hanging's too good for him.

I may stop going soon, not due to our plight but because I am being driven from the club i love by the idiots in the stand. Anyone has the right to boo, if they want to but do so at the final whistle or half time. Booing individual players when they touch the ball is stupid as is the recent rise in racism towards our own players, to do it to the opposition is beyond wrong but to do it to our own shows the lack of intelligence in our supporters

Agree with the last two posts (mcGlovin and cgfs). As i have said before, creating isnt his job. The midfield man next to him should be creating while Semedo protects. Racon and McCormack are the problem. The fact that Racon doesnt create and instead tries to copy Semedo's style leads Semedo to try and take the responsibility to try passes that usually dont come off because he doesnt have the ability to do that. He hasnt learnt that as he isnt supposed to do that.

Semedo's job is to battle and give it to the creative guy to go forward. The fact that he gives it to Racon who shimmys left, shimmys right then passes backwards isnt Semedo's fault. Mcoxo is just shite
  • I've heard a few commenting on racist comments from the stands. It is despicable. I have always thought stewards should do more in this area, I guess it takes members of the crowd to report the racist before action is taken? Are people turning a blind eye to it? Should the Big Sreen show anti-racism adverts?

Well he is not exactly shining in the defensive role is he, we are leaking goals all over the park and teams are scoring for fun against us at the moment, I am not saying he is a bad player and I am sure he is a nice guy but I have to agree with a lot of people on here by saying he and Racon are not the answer to get out of this league.
  • It's not so much that they are bad players. The three of them are just too similar to play passing football in a 4-3-3/4-5-1.

Wasn't there last night but quite often recently someone wins the ball, Semedo passes short to Racon, he passes short to someone else and so on. Our CMs can't/won't turn, drive forward, dribble into space and don't have a good range of passing. Confidence comes into it but I think the main problem is they just don't have it in their game.

I'd love to see us play a proper 4-3-3, attacking passing football like Blackpool but we need a proper playmaker and a good all round midfielder. There'd then be room for Semedo to do what he does.

I have to say i agree with this post, i despair sometimes at the comments, booing of individuals and the insidious racial element that's creeping in.
  • I don't think many are having a go at Semedo for what he's doing, ie. being a destroyer, but playing such a limited player in a 2 man midfield partnership with Racon or McCormack just isn't going to work. I can't think of any current successful sides who have an out and out defensive midfielder alongside a creative maestro in a 2 man central midfield.
  • You might be right. Terry Bullivant and Don McAllister took some beating but at least they tackled. I guess any midfield that had Brendan O'Connell would also be in with a shout for the title.

Brendan elbowed Batty though which was a highlight of that season for me. The biggest let down has to be Redfearn, so much expected so little delivered
  • A good midfielder is a player who is always looking for the ball to do something with it. Sometimes comes deep to collect from the defenders to spread the play, other times he will make the short pass and move expecting the return ball and ultimately he will thread the ball through to a forward to get in behind the defence. How many times have our forwards been 'one on one' this season? Not many. A good midfield player should control the game and be the player on the pitch that does most of the work. Think of Gerrard and how he plays for Liverpool and consider why the mix of Gerrard and Lampard never works for England, it is because Gerrard doesn't have the some freedom that he does at Liverpool. His role is too restricted when Lampard plays alongside. The same can be said for Racon and Semedo, it is the wrong mix imo.
