I didnt think a Charlton side could get any worse , yet these gutless morons continue to astound me.
I'm not going to crucify Chris Powell because this is not his team and I'm going to give him plenty of time to build his own side. I'm resigned to league one again next season.
I was wondering , i have been watching Charlton since 1981 and without a shadow of a doubt this is the worst bunch of players i have ever seen. Was we as bad in the 60's and 70's or is this really the worst bunch of players ever to play at The Valley?[/quote]
Worst bunch of Charlton players i've seen , but ever? not sure what is our lowest ever finish in this league anyone?
In almost 60 years of supporting the Club, this is the worst squad that I have witnessed and their total lack of passion, with a few exceptions, is nothing short of a disgrace
I'm another one that has been going since the early Sixties and during that time I have seen some shockingly poor footballers playing in our shirt as well as some poor teams generally but...... given that most of those years we were in the 2nd division, with players playing at a higher level in relative terms, then as a team this current squad have to be arguably the worst. Even in bad times during the early Seventies we used to see some decent performances, some producing points and some not, but this bunch seem incapable of producing any kind of consistency other than the certainty that there will be yet another misfiring hapless performance.
Have they performed for 90 minutes at the Valley this season? if they have I haven't seen it!

Gutless and passionless bunch of misfits indeed. I reckon I could fight the lot of them single handedly, that's how weak I think they all are. Get them down a boxing gym and teach them how to fight and take a punch, it might just get their adrenalin going, bunch of weaklins! Been supporting since 1978 and have never seen a team so disinterested after going a goal down....or up.
im so angry and fed up. this is my first season as a st holder and what a season eh?
im going to seriously think about whether im going to renew or not based on recent performances.
im not angry with the board or manager. its the players who are a disgrace and i feel it will be quite difficult to part with my hard earned cash to support these useless, lazy, crap players.
I go back to the late Fifties, and as you will see from the black and white films, we usually played on mud. Heavy boots with studs and a ball that weighed a ton made it hard to be skilfull, but the difference was that the drive and will to win was always there. Nowadays we are watching 20 year old millionaires who are more interested in their cars and holidays. The answer is yes, but I believe that CP will get it right, not this season with this squad maybe but keep the faith.
I do think we should be aware that recent bad performances will stick out more than those which time has faded from many years ago.
I take Sporadick's point that given the level we are at this team has to be a contender for worst ever but I remember some awful performances in the relegation side of 79/80 when the likes of Tony Hazell, Garry Churchouse and Richard Wilson formed the "spine" of our side on occasion although as I played sport myself then I didn't attend every game. Likewise in the early seventies when the likes of Barry Endean were lumbering around.
Players are fitter now (even ours!) so I can't believe this lot are worse than some of those I've mentioned.
I felt also that Pardew's "revolving door" teams of 08/09 were worse and felt similarly despondent to last night after getting stuffed by Barnsley and Sheffield United in quick succession at The Valley.
40+ years and seen some true sh*t in that but this lot just has to be up there with the worst.
Put another way God help us if they get worse !!!
As said before i fear the piss taking coming for an awful long long long long time as was once many moons ago the case, not just from the Bermondsey Pikeys or Palarse but just about everyone. Took some gonads to admit you was Charlton in them days. Please cant be dealing with all that again.
I've been going since '68 but can only go on what I've seen on TV and CAFC Player for the last five years or so.
We've been equally as poor in the past, I believe, but one thing that occurred to me is that most of the time we've always had excellent/very good goalkeepers, the likes of Dunn, Johns, Wood, even in poorish teams.
I'm sorry to say we currently have one of the worst goalkeepers of the last 40 years, and SCP needs to sort that out whatever league we're in next season.
Agree with Falconwood 1. The team in the early 70's was probably worse. This lot don't seem to understand that you have to out-work the opposition, put your foot in at times, and earn the right to play your football. The word has gone around the league that we're a soft touch. Since Walsall at home, they're all turning up with the same game-plan.
Not the worst set of players but perhaps the least talented......the Pardew teams got my goat, because they couldnt be bothered...this lot huff and puff but are just clueless.

You make a good point about the excellence of our keepers in that, taking your timespan of 40 years, Johns, Bolder and Kiely cover 20 years or so of that. Robbie is not (yet) up to any of their levels I would agree but I don't think he is appreciably worse than John Dunn, who is remembered with affection as a bit of a character, but was not that great as a keeper. Jeff Wood came from non-league to replace Graham Tutt (probably better than Robbie although his time was tragically too brief to make a hard judgement) and I always felt never got the credit he deserved and was underrated. However I would put Robbie on a par with Jeff and at 24, nearly 25, he is only going to improve all things being equal.
In my view Robbie is definitely better than the likes of Bellotti from the early seventies and Salmon from the nineties and arguably better than Pettersen although he (Pettersen) did have one excellent purple patch rather like Ilic on a smaller scale.
One other point: pre 1990 or whenever the backpass rule changed keeping was easier as kicking was not as much as a factor. Robbie has an excellent throw and would have thrived back then.
Bedsaddick posted ''Im not going to crucify Chris Powell'' and someone else posted ''at least someone isn't ''. Cannot understand why the word crucify is used in this context anyway. There have been managers and players that have not been to my liking. ( Sam and Wagstaff to name a couple ). I hated Alan Mullery, then met him years later to find he was a bloody nice bloke. Useless manager IMO. Everything on here is IMO. EVERYTHING........IMO, Wagstaff has no future. IMO, Sam will only ever be a sub, IMO Pardew didn't do a good job. IMO Rob Elliott has always been grossly overated by Charlton supporters.IMO Powell is probably out of his depth and was only chosen after 2 others turned it down. I won't boo him, I won't slag him off, I WON'T CRUCIFY HIM. Of course, this website is only opinions anyway. We seem to storm in to the Dowies and the Pardews because we thought they did a poor job. They both seem to be doing OK without Charlton. Parkinson will forever be someone we will politely applaud. Some knobheads will boo, but they are the ones who will be first to boo CP. IMO Charlton from here on may slide slowly into oblivion. Powells appointment was a coin toss based on heart and not head. He will try his best, and may need more luck than is available to succeed. I hope to god he does. I hope we beat Transmere and MKD and suddenly game on, but somehow I don't think so. But as said, I will politely applaud him forever more. Those who refused to sing Parkinsons name or welcome him to the valley in any way have had their way. Let's hope their right..................................Moroccan and a Belgian...............

Sorry to disappoint you all ,but Len is right. We were worse in 73/74 and 79/80.
Hazell, Churchouse & Wilson for instance wouldn't get into our team now.
Probably, the 3rd worst Charlton team since 1970.
[cite]Posted By: Covered End[/cite]. We were worse in 73/74 and 79/80.
Probably true. But the worst in more than 30 years is hardly a ringing endorsement, is it? .
The frustrating thing is that - with one or two exceptions - on paper the squad doesn't look that bad. There's just an inexplicable inability to ''gel'', to use the last manager's buzz word. Despite his good start, Powell can't seem to get them to ''gell'' either, and most of the bad habits of earlier in the season seem to have returned all too rapidly.
I'm afraid to say that the main exception to the decent-looking squad (at least on paper) is Elliott, who is not only the worse Charlton keeper in almost 30 years - but demonstrably worse than any reserve keeper we've had in that time.
Debateable that they are the worst set of players ever, like Len said earlier the likes of Churchouse and Hazell still cast a long shadow, even at 30 years distance. Although this lot frustrate me to hell and back, I don't feel the intense dislike I had for many of Pardews signings and loans. However, I agree with the chaps above who say this is the worst TEAM they've seen, the teamwork and passing etc is virtually non-existent. It's like eleven strangers out there. Towards the end of tuesdays debacle Waggy twice chased a ball into the corner and got hold of it and held on waiting for some support. Both times the nearest red shirt was about 30 yards away(bar those in the crowd) and showing very little inclination to wander over. Okay, by then the game was gone but it wsn't much different when we were still in it. The bloke behind me got it bang on when he hollered "how many more managers are you gonna get sacked!"

I think this lot give their all - it's just not very much unfortunately!
