Is this the worst bunch of players ever to wear the shirt?

I'm so Angry.

I didnt think a Charlton side could get any worse , yet these gutless morons continue to astound me.

I'm not going to crucify Chris Powell because this is not his team and I'm going to give him plenty of time to build his own side.
I'm resigned to league one again next season.

I was wondering , i have been watching Charlton since 1981 and without a shadow of a doubt this is the worst bunch of players i have ever seen.
Was we as bad in the 60's and 70's or is this really the worst bunch of players ever to play at The Valley?

  • been going since 1976 and ive got to say its the worse team ive ever seen ok neverwent week in week out in the late 70s early 80s but most of the teams ive seen as least they had some pride.
  • A couple of weeks ago I would have said that the team of 72-74 was worse - poor defence lightweight midfield but now I don't think we're any better
At least then we had 2 players then who could cross the ball and take set pieces - Peacock and Powell!
  • I have watched virtually every home game since 1967 and this is the poorest squad/team that I can remember.

This squad is unbalanced and round holes and square pegs come to mind. Unless wholesale changes we are in this division for a long, long time.

The two times that we were in the 3rd division in the early 70's and the early 80's the teams played with passion. I don't think the present squad know the meaning of the word.

    Tonight was a disgrace!
  • We were poor in 71/72 and 79/80 when we went down, also 2008/9 but this lot have run those teams close on a few occasions this season for sure.

I think the effort is there, which wasn't the case in 2008/9 a lot of the time, but either the players are not good enough as individuals or the blend is wrong. Carlisle won all the second balls in midfield and then put our midfield under pressure. In the second half a neutral would have thought we were the away team playing on the counter.
  • The side that played in the league cup quater final in 2007 set a oretty high standard of cack

Some of Pardews XI's were atrocious

    But now, witness the shitness!
  • Been down there since 68 and this is the worst I have ever seen,we have no recognised left back, the two center halfs are past the sell by date and so are the two in reserve,we have no consistent winger if we did they would be the first on the team sheet, and only one middle of midfield player who puts in a performance. Worst still if you take Joe Anyinsah out and you have to say he's never fit enough for a run of games we only have BWP and Benson plus a loanee. Then look at the ages of some these and you'd probably say that there are only five first teamers who could be the future of the club.

the performances this season have been the worst I have witnessed
  • For me even though this team is poor it will take some beating to beat the 15 or whatever is was winless run team we had a few years ago.
  • 08/09 season being the worst i witnessed
  • Your the worst player to wear the shirt!!!

  • Most seasons there has been the odd game where I've come away wondering, is this the worst? Fortunately most seasons it's just been the odd game or two. This year that feeling is becoming the norm rather than the exception. So yes, it's the worst I've seen.
  • "Witness the shitness"

    Sums up everything.

    Genius line.
  • If we stay down this year it'll be the first time in 80 years we've spent 3 consecutive seasons in the third tier.

    Depressing.
  • 08/09 worse, and worse attitude imo
  • not saying much, mind
  • Its close but this lot win for lack of passion
  • I started in 1982/83 and Charlton were pretty ordinary then BUT did at least have some character at home. And that's the key...the absolute lack of being able to sustain any pressure in home games. It's been far too easy for the opposition to quieten the crowd and get a foothold in the games this season. The 1982 lot did at least entertain on a regular basis (that season alone we had classic home matches v Ipswich, Chelsea, Bolton, Wolves....and these matches WERE classics!) and that was in a season when we were 20 mins away from being relegated. Where are the grandstand finishes this season at home? Once the opposition take the lead, it's normally game over and that's poor.

Agree with this post. Have been going since 1961, season ticket holder since coming back to the Valley and this is the poorest set of individuals that i have seen. But it is up to Powell to get them galvanised into a unit that is at least hard to beat. We are an un-coordinated shambles at the moment and that is down to the Manager and the coaching staff.
  • Have to agree it is the worse lot i've seen and been going since early 70's.

More worringly is players that seemed to perform at this level last year (Dailly, Reid & Elliot) now seem incapable as well as some of the purchases/loanees being substandard.

Agree, a lot less value for money considering the wages some were on that season.

Thats a top line, I'll have to memorise that....glad Im 10,000 miles away in all honesty
  • the difference between the dog days of the early 1970's and now is the players back then wore the shirt with pride and tried their very best. A few names from 72/3 Phil Warman, Arthur Horsfield, Bob Curtis, Vince o'kane, Peter Reeves. 100% each and every game.

Do you think Wagstaff, Dailly, Elliot, Jenkinson etc aren't trying their best? Overall the team just isn't good enough.
  • I think what is fair to say is that there are more players in this side bottling out of tackles that I have ever seen in one side.

I was there in the 70's when we were in the 3rd tier, I dont remember it being as bad as it is now, but then again we didnt have the best footballers in the world playing in the English top division then!
What everyone needs to remember is we are the same distance from the Premiership as we are from the Blue Square Premiership, so Barcalona we aint gonna be, but we should have a strong spine running through the team like we had in the 70's, which we do not have with this lot!
  • I can imagine people take it a hell of a lot more seriously now than they did in the 60s and 70s, and while there almost probably were worst teams that wore the shirt, it didn't prompt the anger, vitriol and analysis you get nowadays.

What is noticeable is that despite only being a few places lower, this current side we have seen in recent weeks looks significantly worse than the one performing last season.

And that one wasn't good enough to get us promoted.
  • I have been attending regularly since 1961 and if this group are not the worst then they are pretty damn close. Sad sad sad times. Nine new player needed for next season.
  • In the seventies most of us posting now on here didn't know any better. We'd only seen second and third tier football so there were no comparisons to be made with the top tier. The Premiership is still a relatively fresh memory so the difference seems worse now.

This lot try by and large, unlike the 08/09 lot, but they are in the main third division players playing at their level. 36 year old Radostin Kishishev in the twilight of his career, a whipping boy for many posters on here when he was a Charlton player, showed just how "good" Semedo and Racon really are playing at The Valley for Brighton.
