simon francis, docherty, mccormack these players were not from any full from grace, they were chosen as key players but they are nothing players with tin men hearts
And sacking our new manager after just 8 games is the best way of halting that downward spiral? A downward spiral that has been going on for nearly half a decade now. Chris Powell is a man who know's football, at every level, and after not just 8 games at the club, but 8 games in management he's unlikely to set the world on fire. But give him a year, give him two and he can have this club back on it's feet and fighting it's way back up to where it belongs. Despite what a handful (or maybe more) of fans believe, change doesn't happen overnight, we have to learn to be patient again.
I agree with you Nolly, but in the posistion we were in thats about all we could sign, perhaps the move of Abbot going out may be the sign of things to come,I hope so.
[cite]Posted By: Lincsaddick[/cite]Players being played out of position, no recruits to fill the weak(est) areas of the team, that is central defence, central midfield, goalkeeper, no tactical nous and seemingly uninspired management.
When PP was replaced it should have been with an experienced Football League manager and not with a sentimental punt in the dark, a hope for the best like Chris Powell.
a cobbled together team that cost nothing and is the legacy of our abysmal last four yeas. squad needs root and branch surgerybut thats impossible right now. We must wait until the close season. I still think three decent quality loans could just stumble us into the top six. Quite honestly I have written this season off.
Football is business like all others. The trouble is fans expect results quicker than even the greediest shareholders.
We brought together a team based on freebies. It is going to take some time for a recovery. The argument of Parky v Powell is only an argument insofar that the Board made a decision to dispense with Parky. They made that decision and we have to move on. It will take some time for both Powell (no longer called SCP, I note) to get to grips with it, to have the right personnel and for the owners to put in enough money for us to compete (which may or may not happen).
We are weaker than last year and it's not a big surprise really to be in 8th place and having hit and miss form. Hopefully, the new owners are proper business people and will make good long term decisions.
I have sold a business recently and I don't think the new owners of my old business are running it right, but I suspect that they will after a while. Football is no different. I repeat the fans just expect instant results.
The first four results under Powell flattered us; the last four have gone the other way. I thought we were unlucky not to win at Notts County. Fortunately, we are not in danger of the drop to Div 2. It will all take time.
Powell was never going to be a quick fix so people shouldn't expect an instant transformation. Huddersfield made a similar decision when they appointed the then unproven Lee Clark - he has done well, but it took 2 years or so to lay the groundwork for the success they are now enjoying.
That said, our team looks so lacking in certain areas that, even if there are funds for improvements to be made in the summer, we really need to hit the ground running next season
I bet Powell will be grateful for this thread when he hears about it. After all, if it wasn't for the great football minds of Charlton Life - with the vast collectively array of coaching badges, years of professional experience, not to mention World Cup wins - I guess he would've thought that everything was going swimmingly well.
Think I'll give this board a miss for a while. Just can't handle the incessant whining anymore.
I can't see how any of this is Powells fault. He inherited a squad that just isn't fit for purpose. My Mum said to me tonight that she hadn't heard of any of Carlisle's players. I said that apart from BWP and Dailly there fans were sitting up the other end probably saying the same. Difference is though that it seems that most teams that come to The Valley can at least pass the ball to one another. Some of ours would struggle to pass water. Yes we are in League One but I really believe some of our players are not even up to this standard. Next season will be the time to judge CP not now. This season can go one of to ways, three loanees in now through the spine of the team and a possible playoff spot. No loanees, write the season off and blood Harriott, Jenks, Cousins, Solly etc for next season when we are going to need them. Jerks has proved he is good enough so why not the others ?

Thats the point - you don't need coaching badges or years of footballing experience to see where the problems are !!!
If given the chance I bet many of us on here that could do something DIFFERENT to change the team & the way we are playing. Yes we need a few olayers but game after game we are doing the same old stuff............perhaps powell should throw away the coaching manual & do something different.
What a lot of pish. If he'd been judged on the number of defeats in the first 8 games while managing a third tier team a lot of the clowns on this thread would have written off Alex Ferguson. Loyal "supporters".
We should put together a Charltonlife prediction league mark two, to predict which lifer will come out with the most whining and whingiest threads/posts. Might be a fun way to deal with some of the negative tosh that is posted by some on this forum day in day out!!
I don't like the idea of writing off this season - we could easily get into the play-offs. If I was Chris I would tell every player that he is playing for the opportunity to get a new contract on improved terms. Get them all fired up - surely a resurgent Charlton is their best chance of bettering themselves, given that it is unlikely other clubs will be banging on their doors to sign them if they're without a club in the summer.
Another reason why it would be foolish to write off 2010-11 is that, if by some miracle, we were to win the play-offs and get into the Championship, the squad will be re-built to be competitive in that league, rather than attempting to assemble a top League 1 squad (again!).
What an incredibly enlightened posting, not. Taking up your point, I have written to CP making it clear that he needs to have the West Stand painted by the end of next week. Are there any other odd jobs you would like him to do in his spare time ?
We can still get in the play offs- in fact it is in our own hands. It's the defence that is costing us and needs to be sorted out. I'm going to eat some humble pie - I have been saying Dailly/ Doc is ok but I think we do need a bit of pace in there - problem is we need the experience too. Where I might differ is that I've been coming to the way of thinking that Doc is a better bet than Dailly. We need a left back too - I know we have Bessone but how many games is he going to play for us. So we can have 2 loans - has to be centre half and left back - striker shouldn't be top priority. Still, I'm sure Powell knows what he is doing and has lots of experienced heads he can call on for advice- Will probably make him a stronger manager in the long run.
After the Notts County game I was ready to throw in the towel. I love the Charlton but we don't seem to make any progress forwards - it's like we've been here forever. Nothing against Chrissy Powell, Phil Parkinson, Parders (I still have his 'manager' mug at work), Les Reed or Ian Dowie - sure they're all splendid blokes all. But it feels like 'End of the Season' to me, somehow. It's not just an argument or banter - it matters to us all. Does it matter to you? Or are you just gonna scrap amongst yourselves? I was in Nottingham, went home after the game, pissed off. Met the other addicks in the bar - said I was gonna give up and then one of them slapped me. He said 'Giving up IS NOT AN OPTION'. So I went off and sulked instead. We miss Nicky Bailey and Jonjo - that's not Parkinson's fault neither. We miss Darren Bent FFS. You know who we REALLY miss? Course you do. I hope that Chrissy Powell talks to him.
Maybe now is as good a time as any to give the youngsters a chance. Watching Jenkinson in the last few games has should me how much passion and desire the younger players have. They have everything to gain and that will create the fighting spirit needed to start performing again and showing the fans what this team can be made of.
And it would also give the 'first team players' a good swift kick up the backside too. Then, you never know what might happen.
I've been sitting here, getting depressed again. You know what I'm going to do? I'm going to write to him and say sorry. That's what I'm going to do. It'll do no good, I know that, but I'm going to do it anyway.
Chin up Pete. I'm sure we are on the way up - it's just that it's slow progress and we have to be patient, even though it's so difficult at the moment.
United we stand, divided we fall !
Personally think that we will squeeze into the play offs by the thickness of the silk lining of CP's best Saville Row, then travel to Old Trafford and beat Bournemouth. CP seems to do things late but at the right time, like being called up for England in his Thirties and his goal on last his appearance at the Valley.
I think we've got to have faith and patience. The players have not performed as well as they can for ages, no manager has been able to get the best out of our players since Curbs. Give CP a chance, 4 wins from 8 is not bad for your first job, and the players have not exactly helped him all the time have they?

Fudge off and support someone else.

They've been hiding here.
Here's a video by the KINKS that sums it all up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMSNP6jdNEM
Tomorrow I am going to watch Truro City play Cambridge City. Truro will win. They always win. BUT - I'll be thinking of Charlton Athletic.
