Sorry Chris Powell .. This is Just not Good Enough

edited March 2011 in General Charlton
Players being played out of position, no recruits to fill the weak(est) areas of the team, that is central defence, central midfield, goalkeeper, no tactical nous and seemingly uninspired management.

When PP was replaced it should have been with an experienced Football League manager and not with a sentimental punt in the dark, a hope for the best like Chris Powell.

Thye play offs look a long way away now

  • man we really like throwing away leads, i agree that Chris Powell was just a sentimental signing, its just not good enough, even when we were winning under him i knew it was gonna go tits up. bad times ahead?
  • Not happy but thats 12 from 24 under Powell
  • Parkinson couldn't get anything from the players and nor can Powell it seems. What makes you think a manager with any experience would get something out of these misfits playing every week?
  • Cue 20 new threads all on the same topic
  • It wasn't just a sentimental appointment. It's only been 8 games after a lot of changes having happened, are happening and are going to happen. Give it time.
  • Give him time to build his own squad with more money than Parky had.

Who is this experienced FL manager? Anyone proven is already in a job. Anyone available is either in their first or second job at a smaller club, or has a mixed record just as Parky did.

We could have appointed someone like Gary Johnson and ended up in the same position, saying we should have gambled on someone like Powell like other clubs do.

This squad is a play-off team at best remember, we're inconsistent and he's won half his games. Nothing to panic about yet.
  • I think that it will turn round if we can get some better players in but can we get them we must be trying and maybe no one wants to come
  • This team have shown they are no where near good enough to make the play offs.far to easy to roll over

I can't wait for this season to be over and start fresh next season. Clear out the players who are not good enough and not committed enough to wear the famous shirt.

The question is...do you trust powelly to build this new team?
  • good question, would you trust him to spend your money on building a squad?

  • Experienced manager? .. John Still would be my choice. Down to earth, been around a long time, makes silk purses from pigs ears, chirpy Londoner, knows the lower divisions, capable of motivating players, plays a simple game, nothing to prove, just gets on with the job. The bunch of sub-pub players we have need a good old pub manager to shake 'em up. Either play up or p**s of says Big John

we need at least 8 players that aint gonna happen.
  • Give time? Thats work well before hasn't it. Fact is, we don't have time, we need an instant impact otherwise we may well end up in league 2.
  • You can't judge him on the strength of these last 8 games. What you could probably say is that Parky didn't deserve the boot as we were equally inconsistent during his era. There was no reason for that booting. But he got the boot and that's that. He had a good run early on this season. So I sympsathise with the why did Parky get the boot camp.

What I think is that we should be beating teams like Carlisle, Exeter and Notts County - something is still wrong and as a fan it's depressing to travel to Nottingham and watch a lacklustre performance. Nothing wrong with the fans - we were awesome and behind the team all night.

Set pieces are a problem - defending them, also piss poor penalty and poor free kicks. Robbie Elliot and Semedo seem to be man of the match most games. Wagstaff is hot and cold. Ecclestone - not sure. Docherty and Daily are doing their best and I like Simon Francis - he seems to improve with every game in my opinion.

Maybe if we had Nicky Bailey or his ilk we would do better.

But coming back to being a fan it's just plain depressing - so many false dawns stretching back five years now.
    :(
  • I don't think we can blame Powell. Performances haven't been good enough all season. I echo the thoughts that a more experienced manager would make no difference. I wasn't at the game tonight but the stats seem to speak for themselves. Less chances, less possession for the majority for the game although apparently we finished with more. Maybe Benson coming back gives us a slight hope, but surely we can't be losing at home to Carlisle. Even if we come to the conclusion that we judge Powell after his first full season (2011/2012), we should still be playing for the badge for the remainder of this one. A very very disappointed Charlton fan tonight
  • the whole team is poor the board must realise that by now this year barring a miracle is play offs at best but things need to be sorted not powellys fault but for fucks sake this needs sorting .
  • Somebody said on another thread that Carlisle scored only 2 goals in their last 7 away games. They score 3 against us tonight. That is clear proof that we are very poor team. There is no chance this season that we will ever go into games thinking that we will beat a team by 3 or 4 goals, the fans know this and so do the players. Get this season over with and get new players in that will fight for every ball.

......and in over 25 years not seen by any decent sized club to be good enough for them. Yes he knows the Lower leagues but unfortunately uts the leagues even lower than us.
  • Playoffs 10% for me now :-( Very worried and very angry at this result.

Yeah we should keep changing managers quickly because that worked much better previously didn't it?
Frustration leads to short memories and blinkered vision for us fans unfortunately.

Blimey mate - a few more performances like the last 4 and having knowledge of leagues below us in going to come in blooming handy!
  • [cite]Posted By: scabbyhorse[/cite]Roberto di matteo please .

he is a creative midfielder but a bit old
  • Agreed, we have no time .. much longer in this division and we'll end up like a Sheffield Wednesday, a Plymouth .. all hat and no cattle, loads of seats and no arses to fill them, all nostalgia and no future.
Players outside the top 2 divisions cant afford to live in London on third strata wages and very soon, if there is no progress/promotion CAFC will not be able to pay more then a grand a week. A promising player with perhaps a young family to house and raise will be better off signing for a Scunthorpe, a Doncaster, an Exeter or a Peterborough .. country air, cheap housing and no Boris F***ing Johnson

    Really feeling that way now.
  • Read Simon Kuper or the Fink Tank - the key determining factor in a team's success is not the manager but the wage bill, i.e. the quality of the players. Or lack of quality in our case.
  • Give him time this is no ones fault not even Parkys, this team is the result of of our fall from grace. The only way for the club to progress and retain its fanbase is drastic surgery of the kind in 1985,and I don't mean the sellout move,Sunleys provided money to rebuild a team and players were signed up before the seasons end with Mark Reid and John Pearson joining then followed a summer of buys including John Humprey,John Pender,Steve Thompson, george Shipley. This needs to happen again cos its no use kidding ourselves even with the signing of BWP this is the worst Charlton side ever.
