[cite]Posted By: Scoham[/cite]The problem is more about the defence having to sit deep, making it harder for the rest of the team to control the game, rather than defenders being beaten by pace isn't it?
Agree with Scoham.
The thing is, if the defence sits deep (to prevent the CBs being stripped for pace on the counter) and Elliot in effect playing an auxilary role as sweeper ............ the team formation gets stretched long from front to back, and our 2 CMs find they have too much ground to cover, often against opponents playing 3 men in CM.
As a result we are often overwhelmed numerically in CM, and the link between defence and attack bypassed - hence the hoofball under Parky.
I should add, IMO that is why Peacock & Matthews brought Ally Mac into CM with a higher defensive back line, which Powell continued with against Plymouth...... enabling us to play a more passing game and keep possession better.
[cite]Posted By: Valley_of_dreams[/cite]Anyone reckon that Bessone will start left-back, pushing Fry into the middle and Doc out?
Maybe worth a look at in an emergency but Bessone hasn't played in several months, so I doubt that he's match fit, that potentially means putting an un-fit player in at LB and then shifting your starting LB to the the centre of defence where he might be exposed and is likely to be no better than existing alternatives.
Doc is more reliable than Fry for me. He has been useful in terms of allowing us to cover a position we were exposed in but he isn't as good as some seem to think IMO.
Leave the defence alone, and tonight play the regular line up.
For all individual deficiencies, they at least know each other's strengths and weaknesses - and compensate.
IMO it's too soon to make changes ...... but by bringing a specialist LB into the squad, Powell has shown his intent to make changes ewhen the time is right.
[cite]Posted By: MuttleyCAFC[/cite]Ok, so it doesn't look like we are going to get a long list of examples of how lack of CB pace has cost us this season. So maybe 1 example then?
It's not just pace, it's slow reacting as well, which I aim at Doherty (I like the bloke but he is slow).
Ie - Sheff W A - goal 2 weeks ago - he reacted slower than their bloke who cracked it home.
