• After reading AFKA's last post Im going to slightly defend Slater, albeit I dont know much about him. I was in a similiar scenario a few years back. Was in the process of buying another business to compliment another I already owned, came out with statements such as I'm not going to make any sudden changesto the way you trade, we will continue to operate out of the newly acquired business premises, there wont be any changes in personnel etc, etc. All of this was said, because with the information that Id gathered about the business, I was led to believe it was well run with good characters in a great area etc.....Well it didnt take me too long to realise that If I didnt make some wholsesale and radical changes, then my hard earnt money would be pretty quickly going down the Swanny.....so having seemingly gone against my word, I made those changes and continued being succesful. What you hear about a business and what you actually see once youre in the driving seat can be completely the opposite of what youre expecting and I can certainly relate to the perceived change in tactics that Mr Slater has shown. Personally, I see what they have done as positive.....they have had a look, seen its not working and made a change...thats decisive and to my liking.....they can see flaws in the squad, and they certainly seem to be making the right noises, so lets see where phase 2 takes us in the next fortnight.
You really couldnt have expected Slater to come out with...yes we have taken the club over, we can see the tactics are flawed and in our minds eye if it doesnt improve in the next couple of games then we are going to out the management team.....nobody in their right mind would say that....EVEN if it was their intention......you take over a club/company and the media want soundbites and obviously the first thing they will ask is the future of the manager...especially after no wins in several games and the fans deserting the club in numbers.....so at the risk of sounding far too sensible again.....please chaps give them time to adjust and the freedom to change their minds....they have afterall "put their money where their mouths are".
• I agree with that Tel, good post.
• yep, number of fair points Tel
• Tel I was about to say something similar about what managers say and what they think. The words from Slater are what you would expect if you want wriggle room and not stake your whole credibility on reaching a single target. It's what he doesn't say that's as important. He didn't say we are not going to try and get promoted this season did he. Everyone I am sure will be busting a gut to get promotion, hopefully including the players, but there is enough outside the club's control to allow doubts - but no one wants to hear about your doubts do we. Not getting promotion will be an unmitigated failure but it will not cause the club to implode and will allow plan B, which he pretended was plan A, to be pursued.
• Good post, Tel.
•
[cite]Posted By: seth plum[/cite]The Swindon game came on top of the Colchester game, where we were crap, and on top of the Walsall game, where we were crap, and in between we didn't succeed against a 10-man Brighton...against whom earlier in the season we were crap. If Parkinson was not to go when he did the evidence suggested more crap to come, and if not then...when?
I agree with all of this, except you missed out the Bristol Rovers game where we were crap, plus the Brnetford JPUT game where we were crap and the 2 Luton games (i didn't go but plenty of people said we were crap).
• I don't think Slater's changed his view on promotion - he didn't say it was a necessity with Phil but that is ultimately what we are quickly aiming for. And the same will apply now - however, if we have to take one step back to take two step forwards with a new board, management/coaching team and some new players, so be it.

They have, to coin the phrase "put their money where their mouth is" and for that, we must be grateful!

With the greatest respect, nobody has put any money anywhere yet.

The new owners have guaranteed the debt but they bought the club for a song and have invested nothing in the playing squad yet of any significance.

We will know much more about how much financial muscle the new owners have by the time the window closes, if we have done nothing but bring in loanees then the signs will be ominous.

• Expect it to be ominous then Tony, the days of transfer fees seem to be all but gone in the lower reaches. I think we can expect to see loanees and free signings from clubs like Plymouth who are sinking financially. In many ways I hope I'm wrong mate, I was surprised that we paid out for Benson, but both Murray and Slater have already stated that the days of transfer fees at this level are all but gone.
• I cant think of anything to add Tel you have summed it up excellently, the decisions made have been swift to the point and meaningful.

like it or not there was a lot more people happy or content to see parky go

there was a real feeling of doom in the club in the stands on here and that wouldveconveyed its way into the board room there was in my opinion not wholseale support for parky in the board room before MS and TJ.

the appointment of powell can be looked at as a crowd pleaser.

but it can be looked at as the foundations in which our club can blossom, powelly isnt a fool he wouldnt be taken for one and if for one minute he thought he was here to keep the natives quiet i am sure he wouldnt have taken the role, this is a man who has had a full and distinguished career and has carved out the startings of a great coaching career who now wants to turn into a great manager.

and he has had the chance to do it here, now it may be that he wouldve like this job in 12 months with another seasons experence under Sven in an ideal world.

but i believe he is hungry now and will prove many people wrong and be a great and succesful manager for us who will be given time to demonstrate it to the rest of the football comunity

Well, if the days of transfer fees in L1 are over then I bloody well wish that someone would tell Southampton. :)

In guaranteeing the debt, paying Parky and his team off, paying Leicester for SCP and saying there are funds available, I'd say they actually have put their money where their mouth is because administration was going to happen without them.

Just because you only pay a nominal fee for the club, if you guarantee the debt, it's like say buying a solvent club for £10m. It STILL COSTS YOU £10m !!!

This!
• If we increase the quality and quantity of the squad through loans, that will represent an investment. Loanees still have salaries to be paid.

It also makes sense not to commit to new long term contracts until we are sure which division we are in next year.

Exchanging Martin for Ecclestone in wage terms makes a lot of sense to me, even though I very much wanted to like Lee Martin, and believe that he will come good one day.
