Martin O'Neill to take over at West Ham (according to BBC)

I really hope this is not true. I hate West Ham and I fear he will be able to get them out of trouble. I really thought that with their debts, relegation might have left them in free fall.

  • I don't mind West Ham, know a few people that support them and they all like Charlton. I say good luck to them but am surprised he would go there given their imperilous position at the bottom of the table. Sure, they must be paying him well with bonuses if he keeps them up.
  • What a league the Championship COULD be next year: West Ham, Palace, Millwall and Charlton?
  • Utterly disgraceful by the board of West Ham. Their manager, Avram Grant should be supported all the time he's their manager. If they have gone behind his back and appointed a replacement while he's in the job, I hope he sues them for as every penny Curbs left them with.

As for O'Neill, his reputation is slowly tarnishing. He WAS suggested as the next England manager. He WAS suggested as the next Man Utd manager. Now he's reduced to grubby little deals with the nasty owners of a rapidly failing football club. And, apparantly, happy to let his story appear on the BBC - his former employers.

West Ham used to be a fantastic football club. O'Neill used to be a well-respected football manager. They now both deserve each other. And I can't wait until one of their ex-players passes them on the way up, with Charlton.
  • I have to say I'm fairly surprised MON is taking this job (apparently). Immediate pressure. Interfering owners. A lot of deadwood and overhaul needed. Far superior competition. It's definitely a worse starting point than he had with Villa and he's upped his stock since then as well.
  • normally I''d be happy to see West Ham get relegated, but not if it increases the odds of Spurs moving to east London (and demolishing the £500M Olympics Stadium in the process).
  • I wonder what the Villa fans will think of him now, I know quite a few of them were bitter about the way he left and his protests re spending money given that he did actually shell out quite a lot on some mediocre footballers (Nigel Reo-Coker, £.7.5m?). And now he has gone off to work for those blue-nose bastards. I certainly wouldn't have wanted to swap bosses from Lerner to them.
  • Don't care who is the manager of West Ham as long as they are relegated.

A disgrace of a football club. Nasty, racist fans. A dishonourable board. A load of mercenary players. A history of cheating the system.

How this club is even being considered to take over the Olympic stadium is beyond me. The Olympics is meant to make its name as being a sport for the masses, a clean and unspoilt extravaganza of sport; and to me that is tarnished by who will occupy the stadium after it finishes. The thought that my tax money will go towards helping that scuzbucket of a football club makes my stomach churn.
  • poor form from whu if this is true.i reckon that grant would have got them out of trouble as it is ridiculously tight in that oh so boring league and that mon is not the right man for their job.

not got a lot against whu but i wouldn't be the slightest bit upset to see them go down.
  • to think we wanted Sullivan and Gold here about a year ago ... phew, that was close
  • Villa fans must be gutted. Left them to go and work for their old enemy's ex owners.

Great manager and nice fella though and can see him doing well at west ham.

Never rated avram grant. My nan could have done well with the Chelsea team he inherited.

Only for the new line of Dvds they would have introduced in the club shop Kap ;-)

I think they just used us, whilst getting the hamsters.
  • Club run by two dreadful characters, I complete agree with Lawro on Football Focus.....'you either back a manager or not, none of this '1 win in 3' rubbish
  • Surprised MON would go there.

Hope Grant fields the under-12s against Arsenal. Nothing against West Ham, but Sullivan/Gold/Brady have as much class as the cat shit outside my house.
  • Very surprised if he goes there .. and disappointed ... thought he has better aspirations than the hamsters ... it's about time they paid for their behaviour over the last few years and got relegated

Don't go there O'Neill .. you can do better

I have nothing against West Ham the club. I do have problems with the Board over the last decade.

They now have in charge a couple of fans who stepped in when the club was in an incredibly precarious financial position.

They have some plans to go to the Olympic stadium which are absolutely dependent upon staying in the Premier League. They still have some massive debts and the club has got off to its worst start ever in the Premier League.

I wonder myself what we would be thinking if this was our club, let alone if we had stumped up £50M to take over the club.

Personally I am surprised that things have gone badly for Grant. I also think he will probably get things right. There is though a clamour amongst the fans to replace him. That is very hard for the Board to ignore because it rubs off on the team. Personally I think that an unpremeditated decision to sack Parky was taken after the boos that accompanied our defeat by Swindon. Boards have very sensitive ears, especially in times of strife.

O'Neill is available, he has a decent track record. Given the anti-Grant feelings amongst rank & file fans, and the financial imperatives of remaining in the top division, it doesn't surprise me that they are making this change.

Think some people are forgetting they very decent to us in 1991/92

Certainly treated us better than Palarse!
  • They did treat us better.Felt sorry for Grant.Decent man humiliated by scum.
  • I really think the board are being out of order, acting in almost exactly the same way as spurs did when they dumped Martin Jol!

And to think, they seriously looked at taking us over! lucky escape?

Please explain why they are a disgrace of a football club, other than the fact you dont like them. Was they a disgrace when they let Charlton share their ground when they had nowhere to go. Nasty racist fan's? How moreso than any other club, half their supporters are asian. I'm guessing you go to a lot of West Ham games to hear and see all this racism. Dishonourable board? I may not like the but i would certainly like you to explain how they have been dishonourable, I have a feeling you wont be able to and this is all just a silly little frustrated rant. Mercenary players? Because no other team have them, Basey left because the money Charlton offered wasn't enough. Bailey moved to the other end of the country because they were paying more money, why are West ham players more mercenary than any others? I take it you wouldn't take more money at work if you was offered it? Thats if you do work of course. A history of cheating, now there's one for debate. If you are saying that the Tevez affair is West Ham's history you are a very small minded person (although i'm guessing you are anyway). West Ham have a lot of history and its not all for cheating. Oh and before you do some stupid little rant about who suffered because of the Tevez affair, Charlton would never have stayed up,if he played or not. I will thank you in future not to call me a nasty racist.
  • Uncle, I did not mean all West Ham fans were racist and I will hold my hands up and say I wasn't clear enough there. However I sadly do go to West Ham quite a bit because of work reasons and have seen racism there more times than I care to remember, the worst incedent being a group of lads surrounding a car full of African people after a game, spitting their burgers at the windscreen and hurling horrific abuse at the people inside (this is just one of many incedents I have seen). Maybe I have just been unlucky but it has not helped me to see the club in a good light.

Charlton would never have stayed in the Premier League no matter what happened at West Ham with Tevez but the whole affair was a disgrace and there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that West Ham should have been relegated because of it.

I cerainly did not wish to cause personal offence Uncle as I find your posts on this board very interesting reading and like hearing the updates on Jonjo. I guess all of us have a rival club we dislike. West Ham is mine (even more than Millwall & Palace), always has been...probably because a lot of my mates are West Ham fans!

Ok no worries mate, I probably overreacted a bit, its just so many people have a preconcieved opinion of west ham without even knowing anything about them. Their are idiot fans at most clubs to be fair, I'm not painting a rosy picture of all fun loving people at west ham but they are a bit different from when i used to be amongst them in the 80's. The i would have agreed with at least that point. I'm not saying they shouldn't or should have been relegated, i just feel there is a little bit more to their history of than the Tevez affair (they won the world cup didn't you know)

I get we all have teams we hate i have an endless list that would take to long to write up on here, but i hate them for various reasons and normally ones where they have done something to me like Birmingham, i got a kick in by about 8 of their supporters up there and i was on my own, Portsmouth for costing me a fortune and making me miss football for 2 years and millwall well no reason apart from the fact they are millwall.

Anyway sorry if i was a bit over the top, take care.

I had forgotten they won us the World Cup :-) I even have Geoff Hurst's autograph - just a shame it is on the back of a Crystal Palace flyer!
  • Re WestHam's history: don't forget that WH contributed more than any other club to our winning the World Cup in '66. English football today would be in a much better state if it had followed the WestHam template from those days -- a tradition of good football and intelligent coaching. Nothing to hate in all that.

Having said that, recent administrations have rather betrayed the WestHam traditions. I'm sure many Hammers fans would agree.
  • In general i think the number of sackings have been over the top this year. I do not agree with the way West Ham have gone about replacing Grant. They should have sacked him and then started looking. However as they are bottom of the Prem it is understandable that they are looking to bring in someone new.
