    Ray Davies from The Kinks.

Cyril or Paul Davies from the same era Oggy ;-)

"Cyril, Cyril Davies ......Cyril Davies on the wing!"
Capped for Wales Under-23 after singning from then non-league Yeovil in a joint transfer with Dickie Plumb.

Paul Davies, ex-Arsenal youngster, tall gangly forward-cum-midfielder, good 1st touch and vision. But Christ, was he slow.
Remember seeing him scoring our winner away at top of the Third Division York City, after Bobby Goldthorpe was sent off.

Ray Davies ...... you really got me.

    ;o)
  • If we ever had a player called Craig Davies I would spend hours trying to come up with amazing chants...
Can we please sign him for the songs alone?
  • Pawel came on late at Brighton, set up Benson for the miss of the season.Couple of days later came on again against
Colchester and looked lively.Scored a good goal against Swindon and more importantly did look slimmer.Signs of improvement might have come too late for Pawel.....

If we want a fat obnoxious monster on a huge wage, bitter about how he's squandered his talent. Rarely seemed up for it in the Premiership, so not sure how up for it he'd be on a trip to Rochdale. Also he's scooped a lot of money out of his trips to Italy, Ajax, France and round the Premiership, and I think he's independently wealthy anyway, so I can only imagine he'd put in a minuscule amount of effort.

I agree - he scored that goal so I expected him to start at Spurs, yet he didn't get off the bench.
  • ill grease up abbott wedge him in the motor and drive him to bristol myself.
  • Take Sodje with ya
  • I dont think he is as bad as everyone makes out. I didnt understand parky putting him in the whole when playing with benson he is more a target man than benno will ever be.

There was a time when a footballer would be given 6 months to a year to settle as such.
These days they are given about 4 games before everyone says there crap.

I think we need to cut some of OUR team a little slack
  • it only takes 10 seconds to see that a player is vastly overweight and turns like a 469
  • I'd rather Sodje went than Abbott if one needs to go.

You know Abbott would go to Bristol Rovers, be given a consitant run in the team (which he so desperately needs) and probably score 10 goals in the second half of the season.

  • Like many others I walked out before he scored against Swindon up to that point he was a joke - couldn't control the ball or pass to a team mate
Started in first 6 league games and never looked like scoring - has no control and is incapable of holding the ball up also looked extremely unfit
Those who think he's better than Benson are deluded - not a great fan of Benson who only seems to score away from but at least he can move, track back, pressurise defences and has reasonable ball control

I certainly won't be sorry to see Abbott go because he is without doubt one of the worst (if not THE worst) striker i've seen at charlton since i started going in 86.
However you can bet your life he will suddenly become prolific and someone will start a thread on here moaning that we should never have let him go.

at the same time, he will be getting more minutes there so it may make him lose some timber and get a bit of confidence. im harsh on him but theres no excuse for being overweight as a pro footballer unless you've been out injured for ages.
  • Looks like a more complete footballer than Benson, I feel he has been wasted here, one of very many.
  • Has rarely won a header (Barnet away being a prime example) and looked awful v Swindon (despite his goal which was good). So far, it looks like he's playing in a division too high and his lack of mobility doesn't help his cause. I was pleased when we signed him because like many others I'd seen all those goals for Huddersfield on the box but I've been really disappointed with him. In his defence, he has rarely been partnered with Anyinsah and to play him in a lone role at Brentford was never going to work (as it hasn't when Benson has been played there). He does have an ok touch (apart from the Swindon game) and does look like he can see a pass but his lack of fitness is making things too hard for him.
  • If we played to his strengths like we did in the MK JPT game then he would have scored more than he has. Look at his goal there for proof of this. Unfortunately that night was the only game I can think of where both our wingers have dominated their full backs and put quality balls into the 18 yard box.
  • put balls on his head and in the box, and play a pacey forward with him, and it will work. Playing him up front on his own won't. I play him up front with anyinsah making lots of runs off him and I'm top of the league by 4 points in Feb. Just signed a young french guy in place of Reid who just crosses every time he gets the ball, and we beat Southampton away 4 1! If it can happen on FM 2011, it can happen IRL!
  • I'm not having all this "we didnt play to his strengths" pap .......... I've got to be honest he's just not good enough at this level. He touch is woeful, he's co-ordination is all over the shop, he either doesnt jump or jump's with his feet in the air to make connection making no attempt to head the ball, he's immobile and like most at home he just feel's he's out of his depth.
Fair play he put a shift in at Leyton Orient when I watched him away, but we can do alot alot better and would not be fussed in the slightest if he left but only for some of the comedy value he add's!
  • If we are getting rid of players like Abbot and bringing in the likes of Ecclestone, then it is a good sign that we are trying to get hold of the kind of quality strikers that we need if we are to have any hope of gaining promotion.

All the best teams in the division have effective strikers (e.g Murray, Lambert) and we need an improved front pairing inorder to be competitive.

Abbot didn't have much of a chance to prove himself, but what he did show was very inconsistent. Good luck to him if he goes.

We do need to replace him with a striker of a similar type, though.
  • Hello all - first post time.

Abbott I thought did ok when he started, purely on the basis that it was a new team and he was rushed in a bit wasn't he? However, not really seen big Pawel progress or show many signs that he was ever going to be amongst the first choice selection since.
Completely agree we need an effective striker; it's fantastic we have goals coming from midfield (well wide positions), but we can't rely on that and the strikers are there to score the goals. Benson is pretty frustrating as he never seems to perform at the Valley, but at least he has been scoring goals. Ayinsah generally does well when he can play, fitness levels need improving, but I like the look of him when he does play. Sodje and Abbott are the weaker of the set. Eccleston will hopefully be the man to come in and start firing in the goals at the Valley and get the atmosphere going.

  • Dave Penney has said there's no truth that Abbott is leaving us to join them.
  • My old man said at the weekend that he's gone back to Oldham. Is that true? He wasn't on the bench on Saturday.

I don't ever recall Chris Dickson as being "shit hot" for the first team....just shit.
  • Chris Dickson........ Shit hot? Are you kidding me? He was so shit hot for us he couldn't even be bothered to offer him a new deal as we knew he'd turn it down in favour of a move to the world famous Cypriot Second Division

I trust Omar Pouso is held in the same high regard?
  • So should we let him go? I think we should hang on to him for a little longer.
  • The man himself claimed on Saturday that he never intended to request a transfer or loan at any point, didn't want to throw in the towel so early.

Article up on Shopper website later this morning.
  • I must admit to being one of his biggest critics, he has been absolutely awful for us so far. He was a different player on Saturday, perhaps that's why Parky originally signed him. Let's hope it wasn't just a flash in the pan!
  • Have to disagree with the awful part. In most of his appearances for us so far he showed plenty of the target man presence and passing intent seen in all its glory on Saturday.

Unfortunately the side desperately needed a free-scoring striker in Parky's half of the campaign and he clearly wasn't it.

I feel he can make a very good partner for BWP should Anyinsah struggle to make a run of starts as he has all season. And if he's playing alongside a striker who's banging in 20 a season, the pressure is off him to score that many himself and he can be what he can be - an 8-10 a season striker capable of making a good few assists and opening up a few stubborn back lines.

  • Liam, my definition of him being awful:-

Overweight, slow, terrible first touch, can't jump, for a forward at 6ft plus he hardly won a header in the air. Didn't offer the team anything and a total embarrasment at times for a professional footballer.

On Saturday, much my amazement and of most fans around me, he was excellent. Long may it continue.
