Varney in todays SLP "Have patience"

I thought I would post this extract here for the benifit of those not living in South East London and perhaps missing the story in todays South London Press.

"Peter Varney has urged Charlton supporters to show patience as the wait for takeover developments writes Richard Crawley.

The club's former cheif executive is representing a mystery investor group who are planning on taking control by Christmas Eve.

Varney was at Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Wallsall and a number of fans were asking why the buyout could not be done sooner.

"There are two banks that hold Charlton's debt and there is a massive array of complex legal documentation." said Varney. "There are liabilities to be resolved as well as issues to be resoved with the football league."

"There is no change to the position. We remain on target for December 24 and the supporters have got to understand that iot is a hugely complex process."

  • Thanks for that, not on the SLP website at the moment.

Good news they're still on target for the 24th.
  • bit rich....Rich.The sh** we've been through these past few years. If anyones allowed to get jittery then i think we more than qualify.
  • It'll take until then for the spray tan booth to be fitted ready for *CONFIDENTIAL* to do his first press conference.

I can say that our new sponsors are Orange.

Make of that what you will...
  • "as well as issues to be resoved with the football league."

wonder what they are, if outside of the standard Fit and proper stuff ?
  • the issues could be just the standard fit and proper test, everything involved in a takeover is an issue, I would not worry too much. The fact he states we are on target for 24th Dec is a good sign. Come Boxing Day BDL could be introducing someone on the pitch!
  • Take that involved?

I'm thinking that the Boxing Day game could be quite a big one!

Applause all round for Muzza before kick off and he announces the arrival - on the pitch - of the new owners.

"They burn onto the pitch in solid gold Bentleys - do a few doughnuts around the centre circle and are then fired out like a human cannonball into the North stand penalty area where they are caught by a pile of cash 10m x 10m x 10m which is then evenly distributed to the crowd (even the West stand with us plastics in it get some)"

***That last bit might or might not happen
  • Still think there's gonna be a big Xmas connection.

Cliff Richard, the cast of The Wizard of Oz, an investment group who all like James Bond, Elvis & Herbie films. Someone like that.
  • The fact that the deal remains on target is reassuring. Still the mystery remains.

It all points to Santa Claus, for me. Who else does magin on Christmas Eve?

Seriously though, I do hope people are patient. There's nothing we can do to hurry it along, but there's plenty we can do to put off potential investors.

Just like xmas presents, we'll have to wait till xmas.

I keep seeing this type of thing a lot.

If the potential owners are going to be put off of a deal because of the way a crowd reacts, how people comment on message boards or a single terrible performance on the pitch do we really want them owning our club?
  • We are being patient - ever since Richard Murray announced the club was up for sale we've been patient - lets hope it's been worth waiting for. Even if it aint i'll still always be there but wouldn't it be nice to land a multi billionaire who keeps ticket prices affordable, lavishes millions on the team and allows us to stick our fingers up at a few people. Plenty have crept out of the woodwork over the last few years and i'll thoroughly enjoy rubbing some back in.

Nah, these silly criptic messages of people trying to big up what little they know are getting on my tits so I'll wait till 24th and the three wise men (Dennis, his Dad and Brother -fact*) to arrive.

AS I inderstand it, the deal can only fall through if the due dilligence unearths information that has not been dislosed and is material to the purchase. The fact that we have some goons on message boards and in the crowd is unlikely to be new information. otherwise its a legally binding contract.
  • exactly WSS.

Don't get the sensitivity myself. Want to avoid making things overly public or advanced until the due diligence is complete, fine, fair enough. But that is very different to a complete shutdown in people even mentioning for fear of disrupting the process. How could it possibly be disrupted unless there were negative things in association with the individuals which may / may not impact on whether the supporters will take to them ? But those aspects would eventually emerge anyway.

On a general point, why anyone would want to buy a very public, community vehicle in the first case such as a football club seems a bit odd given the majority of people who buy football clubs nowadays largely do so for egotistical / profile reasons.

but i have disclosed that Parky isn't a very good judge of a central midfield player. Would that be something that could trigger the pull out clause?
  • "There are two banks that hold Charlton's debt and there is a massive array of complex legal documentation." said Varney. "There are liabilities to be resolved as well as issues to be resoved with the football league.".......

I have a lot of respect for Peter Varney, but who might have made the issue so complex in the first place?.......

Patience is a virtue, not normally associated with football these days, so a bit of wishful thinking here.
Ask Sam Allardyce, Carlos Tevez, or Chris Hughton ..........

Charlton fan's not patient!....... You should try talking to some other club's fans Peter.

Didn't Abramovich buy Chelsea predominantly to stay alive? It made him too public a figure to be "wacked"

I read that somewhere - may have been rubbish

Well it could hardly be clearer. Peter Varney’s sent out a brilliant, barely-coded message.

    1. When’s it happening? Christmas Eve? 24th December? No, “December 24”. Clearly this indicates a Qatar bid. If Varney were representing a “Christian” country, he would have called it “Christmas Eve”. If the consortium was British, it would be “24th December”. But no, he’s gone with “December 24” – exactly how they would write the date in Qatar.

    2. “Show patience”. Why? We know the deal is supposed to be done “on or before “December 24”. What Varney’s doing here is to head off any impatience shown if the deal isn’t done by the next game. Why? Simple: that’s December 18. Ring any bells? The National Day of Qatar.

    3. And finally, Varney states: it’s a “hugely complex process”. He’s clearly talking about the Khalifa International Tennis Complex, built by Nüssli Gruppe – who will obviously be designing the new East Stand extension.

  • To be honest I've heard that PV has been getting about 10-15 calls a day from various papers/journalists and been batting them off. This probably has a tinge of "leave me the hell alone" more that informing us of anything.

That does beg the question of why anything was announced in the first place though...

  • If anyone honestly thinks that speculating on the possibilities of new owners is not going to take place or in some way will jepordise the whole thing then they are mental.

If the potential new owners wanted that sort of secrecy then they should buy a club in Nth Korea.

From once it was announced we were going into a legally binding period of due dillegence and i would pressume exclusivity then fans will talk.

If the Internet was not here it would be in fanzines and discussed in pubs.

Some people should get a grip

yes its interesting yes it is midly exciting tinged with an edge of worry but ultimatly what will be will be
  • lets wait till we see what the new owners wife looks like then ill make a judgement

Varney doesn't appear to be having a pop at us or anybody, he's just stating a fact. Personally i think a deal was struck between Prince William and the Qatary 'supremos' - You have the world cup as long as you buy Charlton for me - damn nice chaps, bloody marvellous community scheme, i'll put you on to this chap Varney who allowed me and Kate to seal our relationship at the training ground one night. Would love to help them out myself but what with all the jealousy from Villa and all the others i've pretended to like....

I can assure you that if I knew that Tangoman was on his way to Charlton I'd be using a very different four letter word beginning with "f". Take a chill pill brother.

So that's why Dowie was sacked.

Dowie also couldn't string a sentence together and Richard agreed. How do Dowie and Dean Windass earn a living on Sky Sports? - guess this is more for the shocking thread.
  • PV is just making a holding statement because nothing can be revealed until the deal is sealed. I am reassured that it is on track for 24th December.

Not too much longer to wait.
