Never heard the Borrowdale thing before - if that's true then Parky is a legend!
Whether Parky is part of the new owners' plans or not only they can say. I see the argument for not giving Parky a new deal until the end of the season, but it could make him a very cheap target for other clubs if he's only got a few weeks left on his contract towards the end of the season. Maybe some sort of rolling 6-12 month contract would work well for the club and Parky?

One of the main reasons they didn't want it to be common knowledge was because Parky hadn't actually told his wife!
[cite]Posted By: ross[/cite]Parky hasn't done anything wrong. We're 2nd in the league. He's brought in decent names on frees and 2 with low transfer fees. Give him some money and who knows what he could get...
Spot on.

would we still want him if he fails to get promotion?
I would, how many fans thought that not getting promotion would be a serious failure this season? Look at the players who have left/the other teams in this league. There are many signs here of the overconfidence that going on an unbeaten run brings....

Had heard it before but mentioning his wife made me remember that's exactly what happened on the Mike Bassett TV series. Maybe that's where be got the idea from...!
Oh yes, my wife wouldn't be pleased if I did that - would anybody elses? Although if Murray didn't want it repeated he probably shouldn't have mentioned it in a room full of people, many of whom he doesn't know.
Still, bottom line is that Parky may not be the best manager in the world but we love him and until the best manager in the world becomes avaiable and is interested in managing Charlton, we ought to try to keep him because he may be the best manager we are likely to be able to get.

If Parkinson can't get us promoted from this kind of highly advantgeous position at close to the halfway stage, and with a squad that still includes a number of players reputedly on £6k a week and (hopefully) reinforcements on the way in Jan window, then new owners with big ambitions will have no choice but to say 'OK, you've had two gos at promtion and the club is still in div three, so it's time for someone else to try'.
No Charlton manager since our early years in div three (south) in the 1920s has survived into a third season in the third div. Can't see how Parkinson could possibly buck that trend. Fortunately, it is not going to arise because I'm confident he is going to get us promoted.
It makes me laugh how many people speculate on stuff they haven't the first clue with what they are talking about.
Parky and the present chairman have no doubt discussed practical expectations plenty of times before now, and obviously taken into account the financial necessity of promotion at the end of this season.
With the present squad Parky has built, the never-say-die team spirit he has created, and 10 unbeaten games .....it does show that this team has the potential to achieve promotion.
But that doesn't take into account the strengths and abilities of other teams (particularly Brighton, Southampton and probably Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield, and a dark horse yet to emerge).
It also doesn't take into account injuries, suspensions, recalled loan players, loss of form etc.
Or, after acruing a points total that would have seen automatic promotion in several recent seasons, even your team captain missing the crucial penalty in a playoff shootout.
Even last season's stonewall promotion certainties at Norwich and Leeds wobbled at vital times last year despite having leads that looked unassailable at the time. In the end Leeds scraped promotion by the skin of their teeth - and Norwich only got on to the home straight by winning at The Valley in a match that was so one sided against them, if it had been a boxing match it would have been stopped.
So no guarantees to win promotion, not even for the very best teams. It really all is in the lap of the gods - and you can only do the best you can. As Parky no doubt will.
With or without promotion this season, one thing seems certain........ love him or loathe him, it's apparent that Parky is building something here at Charlton in a similar long-term way that Curbishley did. And look where that took us.
I trust the new Board will back him. As we all should.

Unless they have already lined up a new man and promised him the job in advance (unlikely), I'm sure they will. And so will we. All the way to the end of the season.
And beyond, if we are in the championship next term.
If we aren't, then PP faces the prospect of becoming the first Charlton manager in 85 years to do three seasons in div three. And that ain't going to happen.
Let's just hope it doesn't happen because he has won promotion, rather than because he has failed and been replaced. Personally, I am confident it will be the former.
But I think it would help if everyone - new board, fans, players and managerial staff - all retain an open mind about what the furture holds beyond next May and we keep every option open. It is still half-a-year away, and there is no point in taking a hasty or precipitate decision on the long-term issue of the managership when, as Donald Rumsfeld said, there are so many known unknowns and even unknown unknowns out there.
The new board are in a pretty luxurious position, in one way. They inherit a manager whose contract is up in a few months so if they fancy a change, they will be able to do so without unpleasant blood-letting and, perhaps even more importantly, without cost to the club. Let's just leave them to work out the best way of exploiting the fortunate situation they inherit.
Something I think is not being factored in here. If Parky get's us promoted given the resources he has had, he might well refuse a new contract and take up an offer from somewhere else. The football world is a village, and if he can achieve promotion he will be a wanted man. Then we can go and get someone else whose name is easier to chant !!!
While everyone is starting a Parky love-in can I bring us back to earth with a reminder that, last month, we were trounced 4-0 by Brighton (our biggest home defeat for 6 years), and since then have failed to beat Barnet or Luton at the first time of asking.
I'm not even going into Northwich Victoria, or 2-0 up against Swindon with 30 minutes to go - that's all history.
When it comes to Parky - I am fairly neutral, I don't dislike him at all, but he does nothing to inspire my confidence about future success.
If the Borrowdale/wages story is true - then it's admirable, and was probably done in the form of a short term loan to the club (since been repaid), but it does not make him a legend.
Folk are also saying RM is a legend, and indeed he has presided over our MOST successful period for decades.
He also failed to keep Curbs, hired Dowie, sacked Dowie, promoted Les Reed, sacked Les Reed, hired Pardew, sacked Pardew and is presiding over our LEAST successful period for decades.
Charlton Legends - X Factor:
Clive Mendonca - 40 goals in 84 appearances Darren Bent - 31 goals in 68 appearances Alan Curbishley - 16 years at the Club as player and manager Steve Brown - 242 appearances in 12 years at the Club Phil Parkinson - pulled up a few grand for a loanee's wages till the Chairman could get to the cashpoint.
and all this parky is on low wages imo is baloney cos we paid up big styley to fend off huddersfields approach when we were in the prem and when you hear of the supposed wages of semedo and racon(who were signed when we werein the chumpionship) i can't see phil being at the lower end of the managers wages spectrum , hence he could afford to pay part of borrowdales wages or whatever he done
I'm not sure I totally believe this parky paid borrow dales wages stuff. Borrowdale was with us for a couple of months and we are supposed to believe parky paid his wages for all that time, what some 3k pw maybe. So maybe 24k plus? No way. Maybe he subbed RM initially but even that is unlikely.

It was but it's pretty common knowledge now. I've read it in a few places aside from here.
You can see why he'd want to keep it quiet BUT some of our fans really need to know the sacrifices that people at this club actually make.
