I'm only being "funny" mate, just ignore me - most other people do. I was actually only trying to get my old mucka nolly to bite, but he's gone now anyway.

Well the crowd was slightly louder at home to wednesday and we won? and not only won, played rather well. But its just common sense really, i really think it does help bigtime.

That is not 'common sense' at all. The exact opposite is probably more feasible - the crowd was louder because the team was playing well.
I can understand arguments that people want a better atmosphere because they enjoy it more, but I don't think there is much empirical evidence to suggest that a louder crowd helps the team and makes them play better.
In that respect andy your correct yes, i stand up singing because i love charlton, and still do when we go 0-4 down (brighton) but i do at the same time because i truly believe it helps the players!
I dont expect most of the old boys to shout like a youngster i understand that lol. But every young supporter at the valley to get up and singing im sure it would kick up the DB level for sure! there is enough young to make the valley LOUD!
So if your a player and you hear almost silence, is it going to spur you on? No, being loud does. So with all due respect i will argue that point until my last breath. And we started singing louder from the kick off with wednesday.
I sit in the covered end and to be honest I find our support is only loud for big games, and the same applies for Tottenham, Millwall and Chelsea from experiences and from close friend/family who go to these grounds. The difference being that when the 3 clubs mentioned are playing a rivals (local or league) all their stands make noise, whereas the Valley, the noise only comes from the Covered End, I thought our vocal support was good at home to Millwall, Leeds and Norwich last season but the east and west stands sat there in silence and maybe clapped their hand like they're at the theatre or at a butlins holiday resort Saturday night show! It gives me great pride walking out to the covered before game seeing our passionate support all on their feet singing Valley Floyd Road but I'd love to see this in the other stands.

If the east and west just sang along for 1 song, it would make my day.
Interesting thread 'jazzyjazzy' and this has come up before. What you have to understand is that no 2 clubs are the same. With Charlton's our fan base is alot older than your Palarse and Millwank, Yeh we have young fans and yes we do make a lot of noise when we want to but this club has been through a lot and of course with ups and downs comes a certain pesimistic approach to games.
I sit in the north upper and games like swindon in the play offs were no quite affair. Even at the den last year we out sang them for the first 20, it wasn't till they scored 2 they found there voice.
End of the day millwank and palarse have no where near the history we have and of course have something they feel insecure about. I will always make noise as its what i love doing at games. It's how I support the team. End of the day as long as you go to the games your supporting your team. And again with them clubs there attendances are piss poor.
*Walks out of the room singing burn the f*cking lot*

Yeah i know what ya mean, being there is support enough. Im just old skool really, i believe if i dont stand and sing i aint supporting enough (i know thats stupid really lol)
Total fallicy that other grounds make more noise regularly. Have you been to some of em. Most clubs make more noise for big teams and when their on a roll. Our trouble is when we're havent really felt we've been on a roll for quite a few years. I would certainly like more noise but this another thread 2we're charlton and we like to beat ourselves up"
Have to say been to Millwall quite a lot and whilst their average noise is louder, their roar is more of malignant growl. I have never seen atmosphere like the play off Swindon home match last season at Millwall, and I include all the Millwall promotion nail biters last season. This could be down to the ground being an architect's mess and a lot of the noise just wafting away.
We used to have an excellent atmosphere in the late 90's, when we were a tight sold out ground. It dissipated over many years due to differing factors. Indeed the football was so shit these last 3-4 seasons I couldn't blame anyone. I've never noticed any atmosphere at Palace and Millwall are hardly 'together' when they're spleening goals.
Frankly I wish more matches were like Swindon last season, but I've been to plenty of grounds and matches and never seen or heard anything like that. A friend who is a Tottenham supporter, and has been to Charlton many times recently was shocked at that atmosphere and remarked he'd rarely heard anything like that. As for West Ham????? Their support nowadays is whiny and atrocious in it's noise levels. It's just the modern way when you pay £55 to watch shit.
The atmosphere at the Swindon home game was unbelievable. I was in the North Lower and remember looking around thinking is this the same Valley I've been coming to all my life? Everytime the Swindon players has the ball there were boos, and singing when we had the ball from all stands. What also sticks in my mind was when we scored one of the goals, can't remember which one, I remember seeing people most of the East stand on there feet chanting who are ya! who are ya! at Swindon, something I've never witnessed this stand do. If we had a more hostile atmosphere at the Valley like on this occasion, I believe results will improve.
Were you not at the Valley in the early Premiership years (1998-2003ish)??
The Valley was rocking more often than not in that period and was regularly commented on by opposing Premiership managers a difficult place to get a result as the fans really got behind CAFC.
And Redman is right - most football ground's are quiet these days unless the side is on a roll or it's a huge game like Spurs-Inter last week or Liverpool-Chelsea yesterday.
Plus it's well-known that SKY turn the microphones right up for their live games to try and give the impression the ground is a lot louder than it is.

Doesnt this prove my point about being loud helps win games!?
[cite]Posted By: CafcAndy[/cite]Been a season ticket holder since 94 and Kiveachy, you must be mad to think we had any type of loud intimidating atmosphere. Back in them days the valley was a much happier place, and when the covered end did sing it was like a modern day Fulham/Bolton at most.
A number of West Ham, spurs and leeds fans used to tell me the best atompshere they heard was at the valley back in them days.
Especially now we have been relegated a couple of times and have 10,000+ empty seats regularly, I do find myself wishing we could have the original 1992 Valley back in a backward way, the new North stand never really captured the same atmosphere as the old E/F blocks of the 92 covered end. Low roof, packed in tight, that thing used to be rocking on numerous occasions around the late 90's / early 00's.
I like to sit in West Stand, mainly because of the view I and my declining eyesight. In a subdued atmosphere, we sometimes sing, but it's often just shouting or swearing. To get something more out of us and East Stand, here's a suggestion:
ONCE, during a game, the vocal Covered could ask East and West if they're Charlton, then why don't they sing "cos we can't hear a f** thing, ooh aah, ooh aah" FIVE SECONDS LATER, East and West could all stand up, pointing to ....Covered End and sing "it's Charlton till I die" the usual 4 times.
If it's always asked just once, I'm sure the response will always be there and the Covered End faithful will feel we're all with them. Could even impress visitors.

However I agree that an all singing Valley is better than a quiet one.

It doesn't prove it, no.
That's it - I'm not looking at this thread any more. Honest. No, I'm not. Definitely. Absolutely. Final answer.
I think I'll leave this thread alone for a while.
it does seem to be repeating.
There all saying the same thing.
