Abbott- a blundering, 'tekkerless' elephant

edited November 2010 in General Charlton
watching abbott today, worst striker i have seen at charlton for an age, cannot dribble, cannot jump for headers, only thing he can do is stick his bum into defenders and lumber around on the pitch looking absolutley knackered after a 10 metre 'sprint' of his.

  • Heard similar things about Benson a few weeks ago
  • yeah but Benson has shown improvements, and has a great track record with 20+ goals last season, and abbott looks as though he wont improve. I would have much preferred Akpo Sodje on the pitch than abbott
  • And the official Charlton scapegoat this week is .......Pav Abbott.
  • I like abbott... loads of effort, tracks back...
    weren't there today though
  • im not making him a scapegoat, im just saying that he doesnt really have the ability to play consistent good football

Benson has show improvement because he's had a run in the side. Abbott has not. Given a chance I think Abbott could score 15+ goals this season and in my opinion is a better forward than Benson. Time will tell I suppose.

He scored 1 in 3 goals at this level last season and similar the previous, so he must have something, but has dissapointed so far. Both he and Sodje are going to be called upon in the next few weeks with the weight of fixtures that are coming through.

My concern is that he is another Andy Gray, just does not settle down south. A goal at League level may change him around completely as has been the case with Benno. And hopefully we'll be singing

You put your left foot in
    your left foot out
    in, out, in, out
    you shake it all about
    you do the Pawel Abbott
    and you turn around
    thats what its all about.
    ohhhhh the Pawel Abbott
    ohhhhh the Pawel Abbott
    left foot, right foot
    goal, goal, goal
  • Pawel Abbott played the second half today and hit the crossbar, the nearest we came to scoring, but in comparison to Anyinsah he looked very ineffective indeed. I am very disappointed in Abbott, maybe the 'northerner moving south' syndrome is true in his case, obviously there may be a footballer who could be a positive asset for us in him somewhere....but it hasn't shown itself yet.

I think you'll find he has plenty of ability to play football, generally a decent touch, can lay the ball off well ......and has scored regularly all through his career, including 24 goals for Huddersfield Town 5 years ago. He even scored 13 goals as the lone forward in Oldham's dismal close to relegation 4-5-1 formation last season.

Pace isn't his main asset though, and if he was quicker (and fitter) he could no doubt do a job again in the CHampionship.

But my gut feeling is something isn't right at the moment; Parky said some strange things about him a month ago, then coincedentally a day or so later Abbott himself featured on the OS emphasising all the right things expected of him.

So something has evidently been said behind the scenes. And there's no doubt in my mind that Abbott is carrying too much lard at the moment; as we can all see, he just doesn't look fit.
  • He was poor and he has been poor pretty much everytime I've seen him.

I think Akpo offers more than him but doesn't seem to get a look in.

  • In fairness, he was terrible today.
  • Cannot say I have been impressed with Abbott at all this season, not sure why as he has scored for all his previous clubs and not here as apart from the 3 cup goals- he has not even looked like scoring in our games.

Benson may have had a slow start but did miss a few chances (Tranmere away, Daggers JPT for example) and was getting into the positions. Abbott does not seem to be doing the same which is owrrying. Not really sure he brings enough to the team when he plays.
  • What oggy said.

Stupid scapegoating from people who can't distinguish between a bad game and a bad player.

Already we've seen wagstaff, solly, mccormack, francis and benson written off this season and only this week elliot was the worst keeper in this division and described as non-league.

    Get some fricking perspective.

As shit as abbott may have become at the charlton fat club , there is no way akpo is better. ,never , no way , there is no such thing

I thought abbott looked decent early on , orient away he grafted his socks off but he has gone off the boil

  • Wasn't as bad as some suggest and he came closest to scoring and please tell me what service he got in a sub standard team performance. and to suggest he is worse than akpo? Please.
  • Had a dreadful 15 mins after he game but to be fair it can be difficult for a sub to get in the game. He then gained afree kick and then hit the crossbar. For the next 15- 20 minutes He did pretty well , holding up play. A player lacking in confidence - but how we get round that I'm not sure. Benno and Joe must be first choice

Plus points: Generally a decent touch, can lay the ball off and has scored pretty regularly in his career.

Minus points: No pace. Something isn't right. Too much lard. Doesn't look fit.

Good fricking perspective and Oggy is pretty much spot on, on both sides of the equation, I suspect.

The lard and lack of fitness probably rule him out of contention at the moment. Which as long as Ayinsah and Benson stay fit, need not be a problem.

Whether he's better than Akpo, I'd say the jury is still out.
  • Anyinsah and benson are doing well so cant be dropped. But if they weren't, he'd get a run and I think he'd be a good player for us.
  • abbott was dreadful today, lumbering is going gentle on him

I'd have brought Akpo on today. He couldn't have done any worse. He will atleast chase the ball around. Abbott looks completely out of sorts and if things are wrong off the field he shouldn't be back on it until its sorted.

Having watched him at Orient and seen the effort he put in at MK Dons, I don't doubt that there is a player in there somewhere, we just aren't seeing it at the moment.
  • And ''tekkerless''

    Wtf. Stupid soccer am language
  • First few game he was excellent, since the he has been injured and hasn't looked fit. Get him from again and keg will be useful.
  • Well, if people are going to 'slaughter' him, he might as well be known as Pawel Abbottoir.

(Would that make him a France international....?)
  • been shit from day one, end of, everytime he makes a run he looks like joe public finishing the london marathon.

Dunno about that. I remember being quite impressed with him v Orient.

I'd agree that he's not the same player at the moment and shouldn't be near the team.

As Oggy says, ''something isn't right''.

I also think Kap's Andy Gray comparison is insightful - and given what a flop AG was for us, potentially a rather alarming analogy.

And, yes, what does 'tekkerless' mean? I've never watched Soccer am or whatever it is. I googled the word - and the only thing that came up was this thread!
  • Read thr first few comments on this thread and decided to post - apologies if what I say is repeating others.

I was there today. When he came on he was "shit". But that's one game. The fella hasn't played since when? And then he hhit the bar.

Benson was "shit" a couple of weeks ago. I like to think (hope?) That maybe Parky knows what he's doing anf woll give this fella a slight chance before slagging him off in public. I hope, but then not everyone is as pissed in a pub in the west end as me just now!
  • never been impressed even at orient, said it since day one
  • You must be right then Steve - are you ever wrong?

(And this is meant in a nice jokey way - cos I'm bashed!)
  • Agree with some comments above that he (Abbott) worked his socks off against Orient....but today he was poor.

I also agree that he needs to lose weight...doesn't look fit and recent performances back that up.

Hopefully he'll sort it out and we can move on to the next scapegoat!
