Two Cup games coming up, do we rest players?

edited November 2010 in General Charlton
Noticed this on the match thread and considered posting a couple of XI's to then think maybe we should start a thread on the issue.

Off the back of our promising run of three wins in a row perhaps we should be looking to rest players as we can't expect them to play 4 games in 14 days and not begin to look tired. But who do you rest for which games (bearing in mind that you have to play at least 6 'regulars' in the JPT)? My probable (dependant on a number of factors) choices would be:

Barnet:
Worner
Solly Fortune Llera Fry
Martin McCormack Racon Jackson
Benson Sodje

Southend:
Elliot
Francis Fortune Dailly Llera
Wagstaff McCormack Martin Reid
Abbott Anyinsah

I'd then probably revert back to the XI that played tonight unless there are some star performances over these two games and/or injuries.

  • No keep the same team they are confident and on a roll. Chopping and changing causes its own problems.
  • they are both more than winable games, so no need to risk losing them.
lets maintain this confidence and bring it into the peterborough game.

We can risk injuries and tiredness through doing that you think? I'm not so sure.

Maybe not as drastic changes as the ones I've suggested but I think resting some players may be required.
  • Definitely rest Dailly/Doc for both games, we have plenty of cover and those two elder statesmen will need petrol in the tank for later in the season - maybe even in the Play Off's.

Also give Semedo a two-game break and play McCormack back to fitness, Jose has been immense for 18 months now so let's give the bloke a breather.

Don't forget we have no reserve team these days so these cup games are the only chance we have to get players back to fitness.
  • I'd look at resting Doherty, Dailly, Semedo and Anyinsah for one of the two cup games each, not all at the same time though obviously as we need to preserve momentum. Give Fortune some gametime and Martin a go out wide perhaps. Let McCormack come in for a try and have Abbott up front at some point. Also give Worner the gloves on Saturday.

Just depends which one Parky takes more seriously... the FA Cup is the FA Cup and we CANNOT afford another embarrassment but the JPT we have a ready-made route to Wembley with the likes of Southampton, Brighton, Peterborough, MK Dons and Colchester all out of our side of the draw and the 6 first team player rule as well.
  • If people are carrying injuries or are tired then they should be given a break. I've no idea whether any of the team are though, and i expect that it's too early to tell for Saturday anyway. I'd still think it's too early in the season too worry about it too much. Assuming everyone is fit and no-one is knackered at this early stage, we should play our strongest team.
  • Absolutely not. Keep the same team . If i turn up at Barnet on saturday only to find we have the stiffs on the pitch and we get beat AGAIN in the cup by a crap side , i wont be happy!

Although he looks older Doc is only 30!
  • Rest as many as possible for the JPT thing-its embarrassing we even have to play in it! Wouldn't want to see us at Wembley in the final of that-just a reminder of how far we've fallen!

Starting to look like what Parky has been saying about having a decent squad that needed time to gel might be true, so hopefully this will be the last year we have to demean ourselves playing in it anyway!!!

I was thinking the same thing.

  • We have to rest a lot of the team v Barnet - Play a stronger team against Southend - JPT - rules dictate that - I am only bothered with the league and I would guess, so is Parky.
  • Have Ipswich given us permission to play Martin in the FA Cup?
  • I want to go to Wembley, so rest against Barnet, but only a few
  • It's not just about resting players but keeping the whole squad with a toe in the door to keep a healthy competition for places.

We are not going to go a whole season playing the same 11 and will need the likes of Worner, McCormack, Abbott, Sodje, Martin, Fortune, Llera, etc to step up to the plate occasionally, especially when there is a renewed spirit at Charlton.

I think how PP handles/juggles the squad in the next couple of Cup games will be really interesting and key to a good follow-up performance in our next League game at Peterborough.
  • [cite]Posted By: uncle[/cite]No keep the same team they are confident and on a roll. Chopping and changing causes its own problems.

    Agree with this
  • Do we want to go out of the Cup in the first round to the team that is bottom of the League ?

I guess it will be a step up from last year !

No, don't change anything - we don't want confidence damaged by a David / Goliath Sunday paper headline.
  • I think against Barnet we will need a decent squad to get through, can't see that many changes for that one unless anyone is particularly in need of a rest. Southend however in the JPT, I think we will see as close to a reserve team as we can put out, espeically with Peterborough a few days later.
  • 2nd string against Barnet (and I'm going!), full strength against Southend (and I'm going!). Beat Southend and we're in the semi finals!

Thought about this, I'd only go for a few like for like changes.

Can't just throw everyone on that hasn't started recently and expect them all to play well together.

We have a good balance so lets keep that. Anyinsah or Sodje, Benson or Abbott, McCormack or Semedo etc.

Don't think we should be trying new formations or players in new positions just for the sake of it. Keep confidence up by hopefully winning with a fairly strong team and give a few players a game or two.

Up to Parky and his staff to work out who needs a rest. We have to play at least 6 regulars in the JPT anyway.
  • Agree with Scoham. Would try Solly for Francis in one of them (Barnet, I imagine, so he still gets a run-out v his old team). Forch for Doc so that we see if Dailly and Forch can play together. Would keep Robbie in goal - he's got momentum at the moment. McCormack for Semedo, since Jose is on the verge of a suspension, so let's make sure Mac is fit and raring to go. Give both Martin and Abbott a run-out at some point too - but perhaps coming on as early subs - same for Reidy.

  • Team for Barnet:-

    Worner
    Solly/Francis
    Fortune
    Llera
    Fry
    Martin
    McCormack
    Racon
    Reid
    Abbot
    Sodjie

Mostly fringe players pushing for a start, should be capable of beating Barnet thus enabling us to put out a strong side against Southend.
  • [cite]Posted By: WSS[/cite]Have Ipswich given us permission to play Martin in the FA Cup?

He's on a season long loan where he cant be recalled so I expect he can play

Yes it shows us how far we've fallen but I would love a day out at Wembley and see us win a trophy and I think so would a lot of the fans. I live in Southampton and the place went crazy when they won it last year! To me it doesn't matter what competition it is, you should want to win it...
  • I thought he had a recall clause for January Crispy?
  • [cite]Posted By: WSS[/cite]I thought he had a recall clause for January Crispy?

Had a look on website and didnt see anything so not sure. If he's in team news on website tomorrow then I expect he's been allowed to play
  • I think it might be more important to let some fringe players get a bit of match fitness. Solly, McCormick, Forch, Sodje, Abbott need games. Waggy and Dailly are probably the only two that I would rest per se, but overall I'd be switching a lot round for these games. Our squad should be good enough to win these matches.

    Keep the same team Saturday.
    Change on Tuesday.

Not sure why people want to rest Dailly, Semedo and Wagstaff as they are by far our fittest triumvirate
  • Got to keep the core of the team - no point about talking about waiting for the team to "gell" and then when it has to start making changes. Better to deal with the odd injury than to risk getting dumped by Barnet and the backlash that would bring. I dont get all this resting professional sportsmen.................
  • I suspect that Callum is Parky after the Super Joe scoop if those 2 squads are the 2 put out we will know for sure

Callum if your reading we need to do well in the fa cup to try and get to the 3rd round and some much needed revenue please keep the same 11 for staurday and change the JPT if you want to rest players
  • FA Cup is important. Pick the first team with one or two changes, if that. Would be quite happy to see the same starting XI. Financially it could be very important if we can get Man U away in the third round.

JPT we can start some of the 20 man squad which is last nights 18 plus Solly and Martin.

Yes, players can get injured or banned but injuries can happen in training or making a sandwich. When you are playing well and winning you seem to get fewer bookings.
  • JPT rules mean that we can't field all our fringe players in that match, so if PP wants to rest people or "rotate the squad", he'll have to do it in the FA cup game. Having said that, I'd like to see us get far enough in the FA cup to be in with a chance of playing a Premiership side because a) it would be a good day out and b) the club would make a bit of money out of it.
