I still think Ayninsah will turn out to be our best striker over the season, he has pace and directness which defenders don't like. I also think Akpo will get a fair share of goals if he's given more than 10 minutes per game.
Benson has 3 in 3 games and I hope it continues, I also hope Abbott starts putting them away though it's telling that Parky said in public that he needs to look after himself...
Said the start of the season we'd start slowly and then pick up later on. We're not far off winning games and with Benson scoring maybe just maybe we'll begin seeing wins more than draws and defeats...
Always happy to be proved wrong, myself he showed little in the home games to myself!, but it is early days for him and the team, as myself and others have posted.
We are only 3 points off 2nd spot, but I think we are 10th...... Brighton will be a game to mark the quality, ability, and performance of the team and the management.
With this game to me brings the start of the season to a close!. We will see where we are after the game and how we perform as a team!, be interesting to see the postings after the game, wether we win, draw, or lose!
Of course we want to win,and hope Benson scores!, and on the road to getting out of the dreadful league.
FFS -lets get this right EVERYONE wants Benson to be the man. If he is a fox in the box they usually have great speed over short distances (Hales is a classic example), Benson looks to have no speed at all. This means for him score he has to read the game so well he is in the right place. Lets hope his reading carries on through out the season.
If however he turns out to a useless lump then what are we supposed to say on here ? how about a title like " Hang your heads in shame you Benson fans--told you he was Pony".
Abbot has done it at this level, IMO he is a better player. He needs to get fit. If he is missing the NORF then put in a slum, get him a blow up doll of his wife to beat, get him a few hub caps and a huge flat screen telly, acouple of whippets and a few pidgeons, job done.-------------Northern Monkeys.
It seems most are comparing Benson to other strikers in the squad. But each striker in the squad brings a different quality to the team - so it's pointeless saying, for example, Abbott is a better player than Benson.
It's apparent that Benson is not a channel runner, nor a target man ...... but what he does do is knock chances into the net. That's his job, to finish. That was what he was signed to do.
Last season, if we'd had Benson to knock in loose balls and get on the end of knockdowns, we'd have quite possibly scored the goals to get automatic promotion. All those missed chances, because we had no one with that striker's instinct to get a touch or a finish a scrappy loose ball.
This is Benson's first season at this level, the highest he's ever played. He's having to adapt, and after relatively few games he's knocked in 3 goals - none of which will win 'goal of the season', but all the sort of chances that before he signed have typically gone begging.
I don't know what people expect .......sure he's not Prem class, no world beater. But he does his job - and puts away the kind of chances that other players in the team don't score.
Yes i agree and can be a man about it and say looks like im wrong, he IS looking good! and well done to him (i do support charlton, so i DO want him to do well) BUT i still think that Anyisah would maybe do better!
[cite]Posted By: jazzyjazzyjazzy[/cite]Yeah good point Oggy i have to agree. but i just would love to see Anyinsah start a few games, maybe Benson with Anyinsah could be DYNAMITE!!!!
Maybe ..... but who holds the ball up? If it doesn't stick up front, it comes straight back and puts our defence under pressure.

They were playing quite well together against Dagenham until Anyinsah had to come off at half time for Sodje.

For me it's either Abbott or Sodje plus one of Benson or Anyinsah.
We need one of Abbott or Sodje to win the ball in the box/hold the ball and bring the other striker or an attacking midfielder into the game. A forward line of Benson and Anyinsah isn't going to consistently threaten in the opponent's penalty area.
benson has done everything i said he would from looking really shite, to going missing and being totally anonymous to scoring goals when the ball is played into the coirrect area
I think the key thing is, there are increasing signs that the rest of the team are cottoning onto the fact we need to get the service right and as a result we're seeing more and more crosses delivered into the right kind of areas. The fact Benson is starting to show that he will stick it away if the ball comes in (plus Abbott took his goal vs MK Dons well) will only serve to encourage the wingers and midfielders to get the ball in there.

I do like that Benson seems to know his limits, he just keeps it simple. Just tries to play a simple pass, out wide if he can, tall enough to win a few headers, and if he can he'll try and hold up the ball a bit. Dickson was also supposed to be a goalscorer who did little else, he had more pace and skill but would too often give away the ball cheaply.
Might be times when we need more up front, but that's why Parky brought Abbott, Sodje and Anyinsah in. They all have something different to offer and should all score goals with the right service. We hopefully won't be relying on one or two players to score our goals. Without too many injuries and suspensions, we should have a player or two on the bench who can score if we create a few decent chances.
[cite]Posted By: Dave Rudd[/cite]I take no pleasure in saying it, but I'll continue to do so.
Benson is Sunday League.
If he is our main goalscoring threat, we are in even more trouble than today's 0-4 defeat to Brighton implies.
I hate to say it but I agree. He was utterly hopeless today. The cross to no-one summed it up.
Romford_Addick said to me after about 60 mins "we've chased him for god knows how long. no surprise that we were the only one's in the hunt". Pretty much sums up my thoughts.
Someone said somewhere else words to the effect that the term 'goalscorer' when applied to Abbott and Costello means delivering inch perfect balls which even Harry Redknapp's great-grandmother couldn't fail to put away.
I remember when we were told by various posters on here that the reason Andy Gray never scored was because we didn't play to his strengths.
Well, now we're getting in loads of crosses - allegedly what A&C thrive on. The problem is they are either ludicrously over hit by the hopeless Martin and the better-but-inconsistent Reid, or if they are delivered into a dangerous area, A & C simply aren't there to meet them.
[cite]Posted By: Off_it[/cite]So if the geezer scores another brace next week this thread will come out again will it. And then the week after again when he doesn't score.
Come on chaps, this tit for tat resurecting old threads shit is pretty stoopid.
You might want to direct that to the originator of this thread.

He has only scored a few goals.
I think you have to give Doc a lot of credit for a terrific header back across goal also.
Bibble - He has proved he can score goals at League 2 level so your statement that he is an 'average amateur footballer at best' ignores the facts.

But Benson is a different type of player, and most effective in and around the box. That's why he scores his goals.
So two different types of striker .... neither is necessarily 'better' than the other, just does a different job.
Maybe ..... but who holds the ball up? If it doesn't stick up front, it comes straight back and puts our defence under pressure.

It's just what we've lacked for some seasons now.
I can see what his old manager John Still was saying, " .....put early balls into the box and he'll nick you 20 goals a season."
spot on create and we have people who can score

Old enough to know how to spell 'stupid'.
