He's a Johnny-on-the-Spot striker ....... that's what he does. He'll chase lost causes, but he thrives on service into the box and knockdowns. Usually in the right place at the right time.
He's not Prem class - but give him enough chances and he'll score enough goals.
Well today he did what Parky signed him for, to score goals. Even if they're "only" easy goals, that's what he's all about, isn't it?
He's obviously not quick, skillful or powerful, he won't offer loads outside the box, but he gives us something different to the other strikers, just a good finisher who gets in the right positions. Anyinsah offers pace, Abbott more of a target man than Benson, Akpo the nuisance. If we need someone who can offer more outside the box, we can play 2 of those 3 together, or Martin in the hole.
I'd rather those 4 than what we had last season, Burton had quality in his play, but was not a real goalscorer. I was never a fan of Dickson and McLeod. McKenzie a gamble that didn't pay off, Sodje is still here now, fine as a a squad player. Mooney good moments but poor at times as well.
I don't think Parky has signed Benson to score most of our goals, he's got 4 strikers in that he thinks can all score their fair share.
As a bit of a Benson doubter to date, I fundamentally disagree with this infantile 'red faces/hang your heads in shame, yah-boo-sucks-you-were-wrong' crowing.
I had my doubts about him purely on the evidence of my own eyes in the handful of times I've so far seen him.
I don't have a red face because he got two goals today - merely a big grin of delight and genuine pleasure in my heart for him and for us.
I hope he does it again and again. We were told he's a 20-goals-a-season-man. So only another 17 to go !!!
I'm please he got 2 today. Goes to show if you give him the ball in the box he will score. Ok i don't think he brings a lot to the rest of his game but he is not that type of forward, but in my book if he does nothing but score goals i can't see the problem with him.
From what I've seen of Abbott, I think Benson will have to be a better player as the former doesn't look much more than average at best. Benson is clearly a 'fox in the box' who offers very litle other than the ability to put the ball in the back of net if our wingers and midfielders can deliver some service. There's been non- stop moaning on here, and rightly in the main, that since Benty left we've not had a striker in that mode. Now we've got one let's hope he can give us more of the same and silence the doubters.
You just know that if he bangs in 20 by Christmas people will be moaning that all our goals are coming from one man and that wee need another goalscorer to take the pressure off him.

Whatever you are on , mate, can I have some? So he's going to score 17 goals in the next ten matches???
And when he does, we will still be moaning. Yeah, right.
I think you have just won the Pardew memorial award for the daftest post of the week...
well i agree with kinveachy, benson offers little apart from putting the ball in the net. he was useless today apart from his goals, his link up play and touch in particular. but having said this parky brought him to score goals and today he did exactly that so fair enough and keep it going!
A bit much to be calling out people that were giving him stick.
We spent £250k on him (allegedly). Spending that much on one player as relative to what other teams are doing comes with an expectation, whatever league you are in.
He started slowly, and even looked disinterested in the Dagenham home game, that got peoples backs up, I know it did mine.
Now he's scored a good winning goal and got us a point today. For that he deserves praise and hopefully his confidence will be boosted, but I don't see how that makes an objective viewpoint that he wasn't good enough for X amount of games invalid. In truth, he's now starting to meet expectations and deliver on why he was brought in, he's not exactly doing us a favour, he's doing his job and fulfilling his remit.
Keep it up Benno, we've all got a long way to go yet. COYR.

And you've just made yourself look a bit of a lemon - it was clearly tongue in cheek.
absolutely ridiculous to start telling doubters to hang their head in shame just on the basis of one game today. point won today but maybe at least one or three lost at brentford last week when he contributed nothing and abbot came on and made a big difference. doubts about him are well founded - not writing him off but today alone does not vindicate him - hope its the start of good things but need to make more overall contribution to the game in my opinion. fingers crossed today is the start of good things for him though.
I stand by my opinion on Benson, I have seen him a few times, I have watched hundreds if not thousands of football matches and Benson is NOT the real deal, he is at best an average amateur footballer. I am pleased he scored, but he misses more than he scores, has no pace, is one dimensional and is lucky to play for my club. If he scores 20 goals this season, and its a big if then I will hold my hands up and admit I was wrong, but I somehow doubt it!!!

I remember the same arguments being made about Andy Hunt!
Hunt took 9 games to notch up his first for us, and scored 25 in the Championship promotion season.
I think Benson is a 'ghost' kind of player. Pretty annonymous and then pops up with a goal. Trouble is we do need someone to lead the line. Abbot does that well when he is up for it. Despite the two goals I'd still like to see Anyinsah next week alongside Abbot. Won't happen but heigh ho.
Jurys still out on him, but that's true of basically all our new signings. Two text book poachers goals today though and that's surely the main thing he's been bought for. You can say what you like about the standard od the defending, but the bottom line is Benno put himself in a position to capitalise from the mistake, so well done to him today. His confidence should be high now so hopefully he can get on a run.
Fair enough, as a strong criticiser of Benson, I am very pleased he has taken a large step in proving doubters wrong. Against MK at home, I had egg on my face when he scored 10 minutes after I shouted for him to go back to Daggers and called him a waste of money but the problem is, when he does not score, he is almost anonymous and ineffective. The jury is still out but am very pleased for Benson and hope today provides the catalyst for plenty more goals. It should certainly increase his confidence.
Benson's scored more goals than the rest of our strikers put together (in the league at least, not sure about cup). He needs a little more time but three goals isn't too bad as things stand, and a brace today certainly helps his cause. I couldn't care less if he's a passenger but scores goals on a regular basis; Abbott, for all his endeavour - don't get me wrong, I really like him - isn't a finisher so it seems. (Maybe he needs his first league goal and then they'll come...) Benson's not doing too badly.
Oh, and what was it they used to say about Jimmy Greaves? Does nothing all day and pops up with a goal or two?
I think Abbott is a better player as well. I just have the feeling with him that we've fallen victim to the CAFC curse of the 'Non-Settling-Northerner' again. He also doesn't look fit (and by that, I mean he's overweight). Benson just looks like an average player - but I'll take average if that means he's on the spot when it countd and can get 15 goals for us. I agree with thewolfboy - I want to see Abbott and Anyinsah up front together for a few games in a row. I think that partnership ha spotential - with Benson off the bench if it isn't working. Pleased for him that he's started scoring - just don't think he's our best option.

You his mum or something? What a depressing attitude.

hope Benson does it Abbott is just shit.
Agree with. The Robin. Not seen enough of either but at the moment I think Abbot is a better all round forward.
I think unless he scores he will be classed as having a bad game which to be honest will happen to any forward we have who doesn't score.
