  • he could take on and beat a man up the wing, with pace, cross and shoot from there too - which surely would make him a capable winger?
  • Seems to get most of his goals on the wings or sides to me!

But has proved me wrong!.. Good luck to the lad, took his opportunity and now looks a decent player.
  • He bagged two against Palace. Enough said really. Legend. Benson is in a similar mould to Varney but I reckon Benson will be a bit more consistent in front of goal.
  • I suppose it's definition Razil. He's not what I call a winger, he didn't hang on the outside and look to go outside. He operates best on the inside channels and then cutting in near the box towards a central channel, so I see him as playing a tight right or left.

Sure he did go on the outside sometimes, and had the pace to do it but he could rarely do it in open play and slow buildup. He more often went on the outside during breakdowns, or scrappy play when teams were out of shape like his goal against Preston. Worked bloody hard, but with so little pace and presence elsewhere in the team he was tight left or right. I always think a winger is someone who plays on the outside at will like Giggs, Newton or Robinson. Sure they can go tight when needed but when the game time is right they'll run up and down that touchline all day. Whilst their threat on the outside pushes teams deeper. Varney's best when he's a little deep but he needs other pacey players pulling people out of shape, and their pace making defenders sit deeper.
  • what the man above says is absolutely correct. Varney is a centre forward who pulls and drags out wide to good effect
  • What a cracking goal he scored today.
  • Excellent goal, seems to be making a real impact there and the goal was the sign of a confident player.

Blame Pardew for Varney not doing the business with us but Holloway seems to be getting the best out of him.

Just seen it, what a hit!

And Dan, that's because Holloway is a good manager and Pardew is a c**t.
  • I will never understand what people problem with Varney was.

For his workrate alone he was always going to be an asset.
  • Agree carter. When I met Varney he was just amazed to be at a club like Charlton and stated Pardew kept reminding him of how big of a club this is . Not a great move when a players lacking confidence.

  • He's making us all look like a bunch of twats for wondering if we would have him back or not. Just shows what confidence can do.
  • My five year old son is a budding Addick and I have told him before that Varney was a former Charlton player. We saw the Varney goal this morning and he turned to me and says, totally deadpan, "Are you joking me? Did he really used to play for Charlton?" From the mouths of babes!!!!
  • The Varney phenomenon in the Prem is really down to Holloway,it really is not about Charlton and Pardew as much as I hate defending him. Until Holloway took him he was a player that had failed in the Championship and was looking at a third division career. As I said somewhere else in a thread about Varney its not like he has gone from us to the Prem, he was not appreciated at Derby and did not set the world alight at Sheffield Wednesday who did not retain him after his loan period. Clough was trying to off load him and there was only one taker ... Holloway,he saw something no one else did and has achieved something out of the player that a succession of managers after Dario Gradi could not.
  • Agreed, Kap. It proves Holloway is a terrific man-manager.

All he's done is play to Varney's strengths - and then continually tell Varney how well he played that day.
    And again. And again.

Bill Shankly used to do the same.
  • Varney was a mess for the last few games he played for us.

QPR away anyone? He was missing a sitter a game at the end.

Rumours at the time suggested he never settled in London. IMO we paid well over the odds for him (Pardew surprise surprise).

Would never question his work rate, but by the end of his spell with us it was clear it wasn't going to work.
  • Varney, Gray, possibly Abbott, players who aren't suited to life in London, and thrive in the North more, some people seem to forget this. If I went to live and work in Manchester right now, I know I wouldn't be as happy as I am right now.
