Luke Varney

edited October 2010 in General Charlton
Ok, where are the knockers now. Oh for Luke compared to Abbott or Benson ... when it was rumoured he might come to us, we actually had people on here saying he was no better than Apko or Tuna !

  • Pardew should have stuck him on the wing for a bit to get his confidence back, can't remember who would've played in his place, McLeod I guess
  • hes done brilliantly... winning penalties scoring goals...

and he very nearly set up a third for blackpool... could have tripped over the greek blokes foot for a third penalty...

but he never would have scored for us..

with strikers its all about confidence, and now he has it he will score 10 plus this year... you watch .....
  • Not me, I said this :

"Varney is a confidence player and Holloway is very good at boosting player's confidence and getting the best out of them. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he does far better than most on here are predicting. He showed in patches (against Palace for example) that he has the talent and ability. He will also get more time in the Premiership and it may actually suit his game"

    But no one believed me!

    Let's repeat that:

"with strikers its all about confidence"
  • Playing on the wing for them isn't he? No doubt getting space on the counter against teams pushing high up the pitch. No pressure as they're expected to finish bottom.

Probably suits him far more than up front for us, pressure on to perform every week and score/create goals.
  • I recall pardew heaping huge pressure on the guy at the start of the season - he is my main man etc, I guess there is subtle difference between that and boosting his confidence, or perhaps its dealing with a player who's confidence is failing, or perhaps he's just got lucky and hit some form.

Thats exactly what Ian Holloway said...

and thats exactly how he has his team playing, with that ethos... no pressure...

and his players are loving it!
  • FFS, good luck to Varney, I hope he does well but the truth is that he had reached the end of the road with us and had to move on. His misses at home to Burnley and away at QPR showed that as clear as a bell. In addition, let's not forget that it is still very early days, Blackpool could still finish in the bottom three
  • Just goes to show what a great manager can do.

I bet if he was playing for us now he would be as chuff as he was the first time around.

    agreed

  • He'd still be utter toss for us as only Abbott really holds the ball up, and there's no other pace merchant offering an off the shoulder threat. No pace in the team, no goal threat from Varney.
  • why did varney struggle with us? anybody have a good answer to this ...

    Anyinsah?

poor man management, and perhaps wasn't the player he was built up to be. His main attribute was taking people on with pace, and therefore surely a winger
  • I don't think Varney set the world alight with Derby or Sheffield Wednesday.

Would be nice if we could sign a striker for once who can score goals regularly.

    Since Bent we've had

    Varney
    Iwelumo
    Gray
    Lita
    McLeod
    Burton
    Mooney
    Sodje
    Abbott
    Ayinsah
    Benson
    Forster

Probably a few more loanees I've missed as well.

Would be interesting to add up how many goals they scored together and how many appearances.
  • lets not forget that he has not gone straight from Charlton to Blackpool, Derby have been trying to off load him for months, he did not do it at Sheffield Wednesday and I am sure he has other less than successful spells. varneys underachievment is not a Charlton issue, Holloway saw something in the player which others may have seen but he knew how (so far) to exploit it.

    Fair point well made.

On a unrelated sidenot Clark Carlisle is doing my nut in as a co-commentator, he never shuts the f**k up.

Agreed, he even suggested Blackpool should sub one of their players after about 35 mins, to save them for the next game. Prize plum.

True, the one thing LV never lacked though was desire and although his spell at Charlton wasn't that successful he gave it his best shot and I don't think anyone could begrudge him this success - he has certainly earnt it and long may it continue.

glad i wasn't the only one, had to keep muting it he was like mark bright on pills
  • Luke has won the 'Pool 7 points now!
  • The ironic thing is that he was probably earning more at The Valley in the CCC than he is with Blackpool in the Premiership.....

Glad to see him doing well though, nothing against the bloke.
  • He came to us as a player with potential, not the finished article. He's now starting to realise that potential but it helps having a good team around you. He's going to get plenty of the ball all the time Charlie Adam is playing for Blackpool. Anyone who saw his goals for us against Palace and Coventry and his brilliant run and cross at Southampton could see that he was a decent player in the making. Whether he can do it over the course of a whole season at the top level remains to be seen but he's made a really good start.

PS: He reminds me a bit of Darren Huckerby...another one who started up front but looked better when coming in from wide left.

he was trying way to hard to impress, he actually sounds pretty intelligent and knowledgable but he wouldn't let the main commentator get a word in !

    (list below)

    Varney 10 gls 57 appearances
    Iwelumo 10 46
    Gray 9 45
    Lita 3 8
    McLeod 3 31
    Burton 18 58
    Dickson 0 28
    Mooney 5 28
    Sodje 6 30
    Forster 2 8
    Abbott 0 8
    Ayinsah 2 4
    Benson 5 10

So early days but Ayinsah and Benson shaping up well.

Of the rest, Burton and Lita the only ones to average better than a goal every four games, with Dickson and McLeod, all too predictably , as the worst.

    How do you know this?
  • he doesn't, he said probably !
  • I doubt he's earning less. Derby were willing to pay silly wages, no doubt took a pay rise when he went there and'll be on the same now at Blackpool.

Varney playing well..... It's the end of days!

How many times he is not a striker who can play in the middle on top of cd's. He needs to come into the action either breaking from deep, or with a team with willing runners who'll pull defenders out of shape and then his oblique runs can be picked out. If he runs through on goal with defenders breathing down on his neck, and then going one on one with goalie I'll back him to miss. If he runs on the inside channel and get's a cross shot in whilst skinning the defender on the outside I'd back him to score.

So if he plays in forward three where he plays on the inside channels and melts back into midfield when defending he was a much better player. Shame moron Mr Pardew didn't react to the successes Varney had in this pos, and constantly played him where he wouldn't consistently work up front right in the eyes of cd's. He ain't really a winger either he's an inside left/right, who needs pacey players on the opposite flank and a pacey/mobile center foraward in front. Hence in a one paced shit team, he was very average: Still better than Thomas, Ambrose, ZZ, Gray, Todorov and Sam who all need others to make space for them. At least Varney made goals and scored a few, even if he isn't a champ cf in a trad 4-4-2.
