Learn to drive in a MarkII Zodiac - basically put "L" plates on and me and my qualified mate would drive to various pubs. Straight six engine, three speed column change and bench seats front 7 back. Great motor!
A 1947 Ford Popular bought for £90 in 1965. Steered like a homemade soapbox and had metal rod brakes that kicked your foot back if you braked hard going downhill. Fitted a wooden block to the accelerator pedal so I could heel and toe like Rauno Aaltonen in the Monte Carlo rally. To put the heater on you got lifted the bonnet and slid a wheel against the fan belt. Sold it to a guy who trashed it by letting it roll down the hill in Springfield Grove into some trees.

My dad had one of those. It finally came to grief whilst I was in back coming down death hill when a halfshaft snapped and a wheel fell off.
[cite]Posted By: Saga Lout[/cite]
[cite]Posted By: kodfish[/cite]Red Ford Escort mk 1. MYR 568L. If it was still running i'd love to buy it back. Then an Allegro which was the worst car i ever had.
You can find out if any car you've owned is still on the road through the DVLA website. Using that enquiry I have sadly discovered that almost all of my ex-cars are no longer on the road, unless they've been exported I suppose.
My first car was a Morris Minor 2-door deluxe. "Deluxe" = 2-tone interior and a heater! Could see the road through the holes in the floor, but it never let me down and I got it pretty close to it's top speed once, which considering it was an old banger I thought wasn't bad. It came to a sticky end when I was trying to sell it and a friend of mine crashed it while he was test driving it!
Hey saga lout, can you tell me how to check my previous cars on DVLA site? had a look and can't seem to find out how. Would make good reading to jog my memory. First car was an Austin 1100, followed by a MKI escort 1300gt then a MkII cortina 1600E (loved that car)
First car was a morris marina...........never drove it as I'd not passed my test and only "bought" it as a work colleague was getting rid - just had to pay to have it towed home (£40) as it wasn't running. Blasted thing spent about 1 yr outside my parents home leaking oil until my mum made me get shot of it
First car I actually drove was a 850cc MIni.................had it a couple of months before selling it to my sister-in-law and bought the best car I have ever owend (and I've had around 15 !) - an 2 litre Opel Manta - 2 door sports hatch.....in metalic bronze !! lovely.
since then I've had an Astra, 2 Vauhall Cavalier's, 3 Mondeos, 2 Renault Laguna's , 2 Rover 75's a VW Bora, a X type Jag and my current car, a Honda FRV.
a BM...no, not a BMW...a Black Metro. "Upgraded" to a Vauxhall Tigra, which I had for 12 years, until I sold it on ebay this week for £300.
Was surprised to learn from the purchaser (who even bothered to come and look at it), that it will be exported abroad as there is a lot more money in the user car market in Europe than there is in the UK.
Will be sticking to my MTB or Roadie for the foreseeable future now.
Interesting seeing the amount of British cars owned in the 70/80s. Sadly, I didn't buy British and had a Escort 1.3 L 'C' reg. Ford seem to dominate the 80s with Cortinas, Granadas, fiesta's and Escorts.
Here's the details for Kodfish's Escort - not looking good I'm afraid:

A 1LR Toyota Starlet, inherited it off my sister, was like a 91 (got in 2003) great car, had a real personality with it and had lots of fond memories of it.
Grey and Cream 1957 Hillman Husky. Cost £0. Compression in three cylinders, gear lever came out in your hand if you crunched the change, headlight adjustment pre-mot was by finger pressure either side until looked about right. There was a van equivalent but basically a two-door four-seat estate (similar to a Minx from the front).
Anglia 105E van, 1963, reg no 103 ABY. It was six years old when I got it. The second was a Mk 1 Cortina, (lowered and in Lotus colours but without the Lotus engine LOL!), also 1963, reg no 506 POO. I guess those numbers would be worth money these days. Well maybe not the crap one.

followed by Fiat 127Sport in bright orange!!
like this one, but in a metallic beige:
60 hp - had a top speed of a bone-jarring 115 mph.

I'd almost forgotten about that. This was during that short period when you had some style ;-
Snap - a yellowy beige colour.
It looks like a Roll Canhardly, rolls down one hill and can hardly get up another.
