Our attitude towards Cups

  • what makes me laugh is the reaction of we need to be keeping players fresh for a promotion push.I personally don't think we have a chance of even making the players with our squad this season. Can I ask at which point do we become shit enough to see a cup run in this cup as a positive and worthwhile exercise ? Bottom half of division 4 maybe ?
  • I think you have to pick 5 first teamers in the JPT.

And who would they be Len, and more importantly do they know it!......

More importantly do they know each other! and the position and role in the team after such a brief period together.
  • plenty of smaller clubs than us who have in recent times won or made a cup final, say what you want about those "golden" times under curb but not even a cup run among it,meek

I guess it is based on actual appearances whether they know it or not!:-)

Curbs took us to two FA cup quarter finals. Only Jimmy Seed has done better reaching two finals one won and won lost in 105 years!

The fact is we have always been cr** on cups other than the Zenith data or whatever it was called in 1987.
  • behave quarter finals is not a proper cup run and you no that
  • God job it is not based on time at the club, then Len otherwise the league might need a crystal ball !

Did we have 5 players that had played more than a dozen first team games last night!...... in the starting line up!

No wonder they have there names on the back of there shirts!
  • I love losing me.
  • [cite]Posted By: nolly[/cite]behave quarter finals is not a proper cup run and you no that

In that case we've only had 2 cup runs in 105 years!

The last one in 1947. Even I'm not old enough to remember that although curb_it says Oggy is :-)
  • You appear not to be alone Red...... to be punny there appears to be a whole army of you in SE7!

  • 1947...... did Charlton play in black and white in those days!
  • dont get your point len, never said we had been a cup team, just that when a established premier team we done what very few do and thats is bumble along, even wigan got to the carling cup final in there first year and then theirs fulhams amazing european ride .
  • Since 1947, the only London clubs not to reach a cup final ( FA or league) are?
  • leyton orient and brentford and us?
  • Dagenham? (I'm being naughty)
  • We have 3 cup competitions to choose from, the JPT is our best chance of winning some silverwear and with the rules in place for it, we have to field a reasonbly strong side, so there's pretty much no way we could go for promotion from league one, league cup run, JPT cup run and a FA cup run, I'd like us to give the JPT a good go as we are actually capable of winning it and we all want a glamour tie for the 3rd round of FA cup (would be a miracle to get that far) so we can't have it all really, when in the premier league it was always sickening the way we crashed out season after season but at this stage in the game, R1 exit of the shitty league cup isn't erally that big a deal.
  • Yeah come on Charlton! , even my lads won the Kent cup a few years back for Gravesend and Northfleet.....
  • lol i knew that but like barnet dont see them as real clubs for some strange reason
  • Don't worry nolly we might meet one of these 'real clubs' in the FA cup!
  • exciting times ken.

I know what you are saying but clubs like Blackburn and Bolton are probably comparable to us in having 6 or 7 seasons in the Prem without reaching a final. Do semi finals count because Bolton beat us to reach the semis?

Curbs, Lennie and Jimmy Seed all put survival in the top league first I think. Curbs and Lennie anyway. I'm not old enough to speak definitively about Jimmy Seed.
  • thought blackburn won a league title pretty quick after going up ken, think most clubs who are in the prem for over five years do something,we have that crazy win at highbury to keep us going at least

True. On the back of Jack Walker's money back in 1994.

EDIT: then they got relegated and came back a few years later round about the time we got promoted.

I was thinking more of since we were in and around the Prem 1998-2008 roughly.
  • “Whatever team we had out tonight, when you’re 3-0 up you’ve got to see the game through and we did some incredibly naive things.

“Any defeat is damaging – when you’re three up obviously more so

Worner; Francis, Solly, Mambo (Doherty 71), Llera; Wagstaff, Racon, Stavrinou (Sodje 82), Smart (Reid 60); Abbott, Martin.

Subs (not used): Elliot, Jackson, Jenkinson, McCormack.
The quotes are from Parky..... who picked the team.... and therefore carries the can as they say.......
That team looks very 'new' to me with only 2 regular first teamers from last season Llera and Racon, they probably knew the opposition better than there team mates!....... but Parky does not 'regret' his selection.

Let's hope his position is vindicated after Friday's match , I hope so, I really do.........
  • I've been going regularly for the last 25 years, and in that time we've had just 3 half decent cup runs. And one of those was in the Full Members Cup. So while a cup run would be nice, it's hardly expected. Losing to lower division teams has been reasonably common as well, so I'm not going to be slitting my wrists when it happens in the manner it did last night.
  • From what I hear, the club doesn't have the squad or interest to compete in the Carling or FA Cups - so why enter them. I imagine you get invited so if they matter so little to everyone concerned let's say no thanks.

Man U ducked out of the FA Cup a few year back from memory - they claimed the world club championships was more important. Many here would claim we can only focus on one competition a season so let's do just that and save the shame and money.
  • Well I remember a time in the 60's when a a kid I listened to the third round draw and the excitement was intense. The third round of any cup game at the Valley, like the one against Newcastle a few years ago at the Valley got the pulse racing. Took my lads up to Bexleyheath to meet Alan Shearer, who was at the Marriott and was decent enough along with Les Ferdinand to meet my lads. I thanked him again two years ago at TVC when I took a photo of him for the bbc in the MOTD studio with Gary Linekar, and Mark Lawrenson, on the Saturday run through before teatime.

Lawrenson was a bit of jobsworth at the hotel, but Shearer was really good with the lads, who my lads thought was a demi god!. And anyway that little 'shit' Keegan lost his job after the game because 'his team could not even beat Charlton'......
  • I agree with PL54.
Why enter if you don't take it seriously?

For me though, the greatest shame has to be all those years (98-06) when we had a good or even excellent team but still failed to do anything in the cups.
