[cite]Posted By: mascot88[/cite]our defensive pairing is all now how and no fricking legs... their very very OLD...
that means we have to look after them...
3 games in 6 days would have been a very foolish move today......
We have simply learnt that our reserve defence is total and utter garbage....
the good news is out front line is looking better and better, 1 sodje, 2 abbott, 1 martin, and I expect reidy to get on teh scoresheet sooner rather than later as well... so lets stay calm and look forward to orient... calm down ......
Dailly always looks to me like he could run all day and he's certainly quicker and fitter than Llera. But if we had to rest him tonight then so be it, but WHY rest Docherty as well? He's only 30. If a 30 year old needs to be rested after 1 league game then he must have a problem we don't know about.
If Parky would've played the first XI and someone got injured, everybody would be asking why the hell he's playing the first XI in a first-round league cup game against Shrewsbury.

So bloody reactionary on here sometimes.
Yes, fair point. But Parky was also moaning before the weekend that our first pick XI hadn't hadn't had sufficient time playing together to get to know each other.
You can't have it both ways. Should we lose to Orient on Friday, he'd better not put it down to the players he rested tonight not having had time to gell with each other!

Haven't had sufficient time to get to know each other - so they should play three games inside the first week of the season?
They'd be completely knackered for the league game on Friday, but at least they'd know each other slightly better? Something they've got a 40+ season to do anyway? Madness.
And what about all those people on here who are always banging on about giving our youngsters a chance? About how they'll never improve if they don't get some play-time?

All academy products should play regardless of their ability or their relative quality in comparison to other members of the squad, come on you surely can't be slacking on that!
[cite]Posted By: Goonerhater[/cite]Ok so people dont give a shit a about this Cup
correct. So heres an idea
off the wall
once in a life time
lets win a cup game !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! who knows we might like it
we might go on a journey
get some confidence
feel we are at a higher level
make some money
wild ideas i know.
Or we could just turn up lose and its just another joke result for the English games worst cup team.
Absolutely spot on.......Thanks you saved my typing finger there;-)
Can't believe people are so bothered by tonight. He made eight changes and chances are he'll make the same on Friday so it will be a different team and a much better level of ability. No matter how much you dress these youngsters up, they're a combination of very raw (Mambo, Solly) and probably not good enough (wagstaff, Stav) and as for Llera-don't get me started. Also, Shrewsbury had a good result on Saturday and their best XI is probably ahead of our second XI so we should look at the positive side of things and that we managed to go 3-0 up.
Anyway, I'm not going to grumble, I put £10 on Shrewsbury at 9-1 when the score was 2-3.
Six weeks ago if we were offered a win against Bournemouth followed by a defeat in the league cup, most of us would have took that. Im still gutted though.
Of course, Shrewsbury have their third game in a week at the weekend and will no doubt name a virtually unchanged side. You have to feel very sorry for their poor, overworked young chaps playing three games in eight days. I wonder how they do it?
Surely Orient have just as small a squad as us, they fielded almost the same side tonight as they did on Saturday. I can only assume from this that our fresh legs will tell on Friday night and we'll murder their poor knackered souls 3 or 4 nil.
It is a shame that Fry was injured. Fry would have probably played either centre back or left back. Solly could have played right back with Francis coming on later on.
Mambo and Llera did themselves no favours though. Surely, we need to think about having another decent centre back as cover. I would have Fortune in over Llera. Though funnily enough, I could see Llera and Fortune working as a partnership. Maybe Mambo needs to go out on loan.
If you look back at last season's exit to Hereford you'll find we were all on here saying practically the same thing about the lack of strength in depth with the squad and most of the squad wasn't up to it and because of the humiliating defeat at the hands of lowly Hereford we were going to be nowhere near promotion contenders...
What happenened next was that we went to Orient in a night match and came away 2-1 winners (ok, we beat Hartlepool 2-0 in between but that doesn't sit well with my 'deja vue theory')...
We've done it before and we can do it again...
Let's just get on with it, get to Orient and get three points...
I, for one, am glad that the youngsters at the club have such a good sense of our traditions here at the world famous and glorious Charlton Athletic FC.
Some of the cheeky little upstarts (obviously with no sense of history whatsoever) had the cheek to put us ahead, so the rest of the lads put them straight, and then did the decent thing and allowed the opposition to give us the customary shoe-ing.
[cite]Posted By: mascot88[/cite]yeah the JPT and the FA cup... we dont need these ... if we can get out of this at the first attempt as well all the better I reckon...
we have a paper thin squad and simply dont have the depth to cope and mount any sort of meaningful challenge...
Get it done, get out the cups and focus on the priorities... once we are championship again then a different story but for now the priority has to be to get out this league...
Didn't work last year did it? I think a good cup run boosts morale.
Was at a mates with no internet and no tv, checked the OS when I came in, was stunned by the result. I could not believe it. Live sky game followed by an embaressing cup result, I'd be putting one's money on Leyton Orient.

missed it by 2 points... whos to say a cup run could have injured Bailed and we could have missed it by more, etc... we can talk about what ifs all night...
With the Squad as thin as it is I think it was a good call by Parkinson to not risk the majority of the first team..
and agree fully with the only poster who was actually there so far...

Count me in too, Mascot ......along with Chunes and HandG.
If the Orient match was going to be played on Saturday (as it was originally scheduled), then I would have expected a stronger team to be put out against Shrewsbury. Tonight's result suggests we don't have sufficient strength in depth, but we knew that anyway. Anyway, we now have several older players who shouldn't be tired for Friday.
The gamble was really only with the back 4 + new keeper........the keeper seems to have done reasonably well, but it seems the defence lacked an organiser, playing too far apart according to Parky.
As an attacking force, with Smart and Waggy stretching play wide, Pav scoring twice and Martin unplayable in the hole - we could and perhaps should have scored more, but 3 goals away from home after 32 mins clinically taken is a good omen for the future. There were plenty of other chances created also.
It's always disappointing to lose a match, but at this stage of the season there could be valuable lessons learned, that may prevent a repeat of the defensive mayhem we saw tonight.
If we win on Friday, it will be classed as a good start to the season and noone will care about last night's result. It doesn't mean the League Cup doesn't matter at all, but it's pretty insignificant.
Whatever lineup Parky had put out, people would have moaned. There are lots of Llera bashers on here; he plays alongside Mambo and people are surprised we fall apart and have a defensive nightmare. It may have been a different story if Llera had lined up alongside Doc or Dailly. That's not to say I'm pinning all the blame on Mambo, but we know that Llera needs an experienced partner alongside him - we were much stronger last season when he was alongside Dailly rather than Sodje.
I'm annoyed about the manner of the defeat, but as I said on the match thread last night we already knew our backup players are weak, and we won't see several of last night's starting XI together in a League Starting XI unless we have a monumental injury crisis.
The one positive to take from last night is that both strikers scored, and they are the two who are most likely to feature on Friday.

Do you ever post when we win....?
I'm just wondering how well it blends in.

I'd subscribe to that, 10 minutes of airy fairy passing and a bit of arrogance and it was 2-3 and all getting out of control

The left back cover situation is not good either.

You mean when we lost to Hereford and won the next five games on the bounce? Nope, didn't work at all.
