Charlton Appeal Semedo Sending Off (appeal rejected)

  • At least it is only 2 rather than 3 league games and the appeal wasn't branded frivolous.
  • I think we all knew it would be..

    Absolute joke.

Anyone who has played competitive football will tell you that was never a red card in a million years. Both players were going to ground, he led with one foot and took the ball cleanly with that foot before his momentum took him into the opposing falling player.

What got Semedo sent off was the position on the pitch the incident took place. Within seconds half a dozen players had reacted making it appear a bigger incident than it was. Had it occured on the touchline between Solly and an opponent 20yds from anyone else it probably wouldn't even have been a yellow.

Ridiculous decision, though sadly fully expected the outcome of the appeal.
  • Pathetic decision. It really annoys me. If that was a sending off there should be a lot of teams down to 8 men this season!
  • Sadly the beautiful game is being ruined. Soon it will become a non contact sport. How semedos tackle deserves a 3 match ban I will never know. Disgraceful
  • So AshTray was right after all...
  • People like John Terry and Rooney have got away with worse.
  • What a surprise! Buffoons!
  • Ridiculous but, sadly, not surprising.
  • The Bournemouth players comments are alright now but if he wasn't rolling around the floor like he'd been shot Semedo probably wouldn't have been sent off.

There is no point appealing anything these days. The FA are a joke.

  • Absolute joke. They've had it in for us ever since we got a ruling against Sasa Illic overturned many years ago which enabled us to play him in a game they said he couldn't play in. I can't remember the full circumstances. Since then they've rejected everything we've ever appealed against. They should be made to explain their decision to the club and fans.
If that wasn't a good fair tackle, then they might as well ban tackling all together. There is now allowance these days for the conditions or mistimed tackles and it is ruining the game. Norman Hunter and Chopper Harris wouldn't last for five minutes on the pitch if they were playing in today's game!
  • Not surprised that it wasn't upheld and I think some of the comments on here are unfair. It was a dangerous lunge, should have been a yellow, but he wasn't completely innocent, so it was never ever ever going to be overturned.
  • [cite]Posted By: queensland_addick[/cite]They should be made to explain their decision to the club and fans.

They never will. There is no accountability. It's all done behind closed doors. Is there panel that decides this? Who is in this panel? Ex-footballers or just overpaid pen pushers with nothing else to do!
  • Buffoons whoever they are. Getting pretty fed up with this 'behind closed doors' stuff.
  • What can we do about this? Does anyone know an email address that we can send our complaints to? Fan's pay good money to see 11 v 11. Too many games are ruined by decisions such as this and it's time something was done about it.
  • Stav on the bench for Orient then?

Hopefully Macca will step up to fill the midfield enforcer role, and Racon shows his class against Spring.
  • The FA were never goin to overturn this. Going against one of their own after the first game?... No chance. Too many suits involved that have never played the game in their life.
  • What's the third game he's going to miss?
  • Oldham at home.
  • Cheers.

  • Typical poxy FA, never give us any decisions!
  • Ridiculous! always said they wouldn't but joke decision still

lucky only tonight, Orient & Oldham so could have been worse. although i gurantee if it was a top 4 club it would have been overturned FA are a bloody joke!

although ashtray was right in a way that ref still was shocking
  • it was never a sending off and anyone with a brain can see that but we should never have appealed as they never over turn these things unless you are the England captain
  • The best way to stop this arbitrary nonsense is video evidence at the time of the incident. It is so bloody simple, I just cant understand why it is such an issue, especially when it is used so widely in ice hockey.

It involves the fourth official doing something useful, that is, sitting in front of a monitor with playback facility, and wired up to the ref. Ref sees Semedo incident but isnt sure. Radios 4th official, "Not sure Reg, red or yellow?" and points to his earpiece, indicating he's asked for the replay. When he does that, no player is allowed to approach him at all, on pain of getting a yellow card. Max 20 seconds later, Reg comes back "there was contact Bert, but his foot was on the ground, and he had every right to go for it. Yellow in my book".

What on earth is so bloody complicated and controversial about that?
  • I so have to agree with Prague Addick. What exactly is the argument preventing using a 4th official advising, having watched the playback? The game has already been stopped.

Sadly, it was a Third Division game ...... and the last thing the FA appear to want to do is encourage Third Division clubs to appeal against any ban.

Putting aside the fact that favoured Premiership clubs have always had a much better chance of overturning a ban, at our level we have to rely on the decency of the referee ....... he himself has to be willing to review the video evidence, and consider the possibilty he over reacted in the heat of the moment.

Some referees will do this, but apparently not our Mr Hegley. It's also apparent the suits on the panel are always going to back their referee regardless.

So the only chance an appeal by a lower division club has ...... is to rely on the honesty of the referee after reviewing the video evidence.
  • PragueAddick is right, completely agree - however in this instance the FA have had the video technology (for the appeal) and still gave the wrong decision!

It's always going to come down to interpretation. Unfortunately we've got idiots running football (at the FA and FIFA). (...and I used to work at the FA!).
  • I completely disagree re the technology. Our opinions about this incident are still divided on here - even with the benefit of many replays. What difference would it make having a fourth official look at it? Takes away the referee's authority. Matches would end up being constantly interrupted. Will be the day I stop watching football.

But how many big, potentially match changing decisions are there in the average game? probably only two or three. At twenty seconds per decision, that's only one minute out of the average game in order to get justice and fairness into the game. Each captain should be allowed to refer a maximum of say three decisions to the 4th official. It should be very easy to administer and cause only a couple of minutes stoppage time. I would much rather that than see my team struggle with ten men for half the game, or concede a last minute equaliser because some stupid blind lino has given a free kick rather than a throw in, like happened to us against Fulham in the Premiership.
  • How have the FA got away with such a lack in transparency for so long? A judge has to explain his rationale, why don't they? And why is everyone in football powerless to change it? Why do we allow our football association to be a clueless old boys club?
  • But what constitiues a big decision? Already on this thread we're talking about was it a red/ was it a yellow/ was it even a foul? So every foul could be challenged? Then it extends to corners/ goal kicks/ throw-ins? And is it the ref who refers it or the captain of the team, or the manager of the team? It''s a very slippery slope.
