Akpo

edited August 2010 in General Charlton
I though he did well on Saturday and ran his socks off, however just before he came of he didn't chase down a back pass (the only time he didn't) and this Geezer a couple of rows back (NW Quad) caned him, 'chase it you lazy c**t etc'.
Don't you love our supporters, ironically this bloke looked like he had eaten a space hopper for breakfast!!

  • I think he had a good game and looked a threat, missed a sitter but scored next one so wont complain if he keeps it up. He looked knackered at the end think should have gone of instead of abbott who looked fitter and sodje's legs had gone at the end so dont blame him for not chasing that one down

Still would prefer him to be a back up or someone brought on
  • He's legs went just before he came off, its still early so once he can do 90 mins I think he will be a threat. Took his goal well then skied one over that looked just as easier to score, think that's what we have to accept with akpo he will get goals but will also send a few on to woolwich road. He was very clever when comming off going for a drink to waste a few mins well done akpo!!
  • Sodje, Solly and Reid were, between them, worthy of special praise against Bournemouth.

Sodje played really well, and if you look at the replay, was really unlucky with the first attempt that skimmed the crossbar. The ball came in really fast and he had a player right up his A_Hole.

Good positioning and kept it down for the GOAL, was a handful/looked hungry for almost all the game: very good performance for the first game of the season.

I can see that coming up on "A Question of Sport" in the "what happened next round". His eyesight is good enough for him to be a ref!
  • I think he's our worst player but we have a good squad so that's not really a problem. What he lacks in quality I suppose he makes up for in effort. He should only be a sub though imo, as we need someone better. If we get that extra striker in, we'll be very capable of getting promoted I think.

Ah, we seem to have our fair share of the non-thinking class of supporter.
Good job not everyone's like that.

Akpo really did his job ..... and scored the winner.
We know his strengths and we know his limitations - so what more can we ask?
  • Akpo does what he needs to do very well, i.e acts as a human battering ram and mixing it up with the big lumps often found at CB. Unfortunately its not a very glamorous job and doesn't require any skill (in the Reid/Martin sense) so you often come off looking like a donkey.
  • I'm staying out of this !!
  • Well I thought Akpo was one of are best players on the day. He looks like he has last weight, and so is much fitter. He covered an awfull lot of the pitch and was in the correct place for both of Reids best passes. Akpo also won a lot of headers, again some thing he struggled to do last season.
  • Makes me laugh though. Some of our supporters screaming at him to close down when the oppo has it in there own half & were down to 10 men. The oppo has 4 at the back if he sprints to the defender his only gonna get the ball knocked around him. Plus he ran his socks off.

  • he looks like he has lost a couple of stone from last season too.
  • If he gets the service (ie. decent crosses) he can easily get us at least 15 goals this season.
  • This is a bit like it was in 07/08. Varney was far more exciting to watch than Iwelumo, he ran at players, closed them down, tried to create chances for himself and others. Iwelumo battled against big centre backs, won headers, gave away fouls, didn't have pace and sometimes gave the ball away with a bad touch or pass. Yet in the end Iwelumo played an important part that season and Varney was inconsistent.

We could go for say Abbott up front with Martin just in behind, and at times it will be good to watch. There will be games though when Abbott and Sodje is the best option, it stops defenders winning the ball in the air easily, gives us another two big players to defend set pieces and there is always two outlets to go long when needed.

I can see why people don't want Sodje in the team, I don't rate him that highly myself, but as long as he stays fit he can play an important part this season. It's not as if he's just a League One Heskey who can't score and is only there to hold up the ball. Parky has said he wants at least one more striker, I doubt he'll be in the team every week unless he keeps scoring.

He might only be a League One player, but that's where we are and despite all the frustrating things he does/doesn't do, he is effective and has a decent scoring record for us. I'd rather that than another Varney type player who looks the better footballer but doesn't look like scoring.

Are worst player? i think not sir.
  • What's Akpo's goal to game ratio for us?

Backed him to score 10-15 goals this season. He is limited and some don't rate him but in the last 8 months he's probably scored more goals for us than Burton, Mooney and Forster did.
  • He's limited. I don't really rate him, if truth be told. But, he does put in the effort - usually. He scored, fair play, but he's... not technical like I see Abbott being. Both strikers looked a little out of shape but I'd have Abbott because he does track back more often. He was quite unlucky on Saturday.

Akpo is one of the best forwards we have. End of subject.
  • Akpo is one of the best TWO forwards we have - and that's the end of the subject as we've only got two strikers!

from 11 starts i think he has scored 7
  • Really was not keen on the bloke last season, far too raw, looked okay as a hold up player, but I always get annoyed, and frustrated with them, and I liked Scohams 'league one Heskey' label that really did have a ring of truth about it...

But the league one Heskey label amuses me...... ( I think some call that a back handed compliment)

  • I was saying he's not a League One Heskey, he has a decent goalscoring record for us.
  • I just the love the way you are all trying to pick the lad apart.

This was going on before the Bournemouth game. Now after he WON us that game and played very well (universally accepted FACT) you are still picking OUR player apart.

Give it a rest and support him over the majority of the season will ya all?

You never know, he might hustle and bustle us out of this league starting with HIS goal on Saturday.
  • Well said, Red5.

If Akpo was a new signing making his debut last Saturday, people would be saying he looks very promising - real handful for defences, works his socks off .....and scored the winner.

People would be singing his praises!

Instead we seem to have blind prejudice against the player, regardless of his performance.
When are we going to get behind all our players?
  • I was saying he's not a League One Heskey, he has a decent goalscoring record for us....... correct Scoham

It is me saying that...... Once again The league one Heskey, who knows he could be the new Carl Leaburn......
  • But Ken, neither leaburn nor Heskey have a scoring record, Akpoe has.

Last season, before we all realised what a waste of space Chris Dickson was, it was argued that whilst he did nothing he was capable of scoring goals and vociferously it was demanded that he be in the team, now it seems to be being argued that although Akpoe scores goals he does nothing else, so he should not be in the team, it does not compute!
  • I don't know what people want. There are things about the Sodje family in football terms that is not always the greatest. Yet all the Sodje's I've ever seen play bustle with commitment and energy. Sodje has been able to score throughout his career, let's just hope injuries don't hit as they have done in his career. I for one am pleased to have a player who is physical and works hard, boy have we needed a lot of that over the years.
  • I think that people forget that he came to us on the back of a couple of years out. If he gets fit he could be great. I'd not be shocked if he turns out to be our 20 goal striker if he can stay fit. He can stick his head on the ball and he can crack a shot from distance. All that's been missing to date is fitness and an ability to do the easy things, consistently.
  • If Akpo gets a service he will (sometimes) stick it in the onion bag as he showed on Saturday.

What more do people expect or want from a division 3 striker?

He is good at the level and thus is what we need to hopefully progress beyond this level. If we go up then back to the drawing board probably re Akpo but at this level he is fine.

Yep, and that is going to be the difference this season: service for the strikers!
