  • It would be very very harsh if he wasn't RB next game. I don't expect him to play every game, due to age, inexperience etc but I can see him being a regular if not a constant.

if he plays like that evey game i would take a foolish mgr to change it..

Chris Solly shut a lot of people up imo today
  • Chris Solly, Solly
He only stands 5 foot 3
He's better than you and me
    Chirs Solly, Solly

Excellent today. Didn't think he was good enough, halfway convinced now and would be happy to be proved wrong.
Lovely bloke as well, would love to see him do well.
  • Solly was a giant today , player of the match for me , can he keep it going? he knows he's got stiff competition , thought Waggy was a bit quiet though , maybe should go back to the bench next match.
  • Same height as the Da Silva brothers at ManUre. One inch taller than P Lahm.
  • Superb game today from Solly and long may it continue!
  • He was superb have to say I'm not surprised the boy has class and uses the ball well

I don't want to take anything away from Solly because I agree he did well but , in my opinion, one reason ..."Waggy was a bit quiet though"... was because he tracked back and doubled up to help Solly out which, unfortunately, affected his own attacking game.

I can see a scenario, especialy away from home, where Francis plays right back and Solly plays right midfield. Waggy can then do his super sub bit and run at them for the last 20 or so if we are chasing the game.
  • what ? Solly, one of our own youngsters played well. I'd be damned.

You usually are, mate. Didn't Akpo do well today?

  • Sorry, I agree with AFKA. I thought he had a good game, but also got a touch lucky.

It may be me, but I feel he is too small & lightweight & much like Llera I think he is an accident waiting to happen.

Hope they both have great seasons and prove me wrong.
  • I must have watched a different match.

Solly did well enough, but MoM? Did Reid's performance escape you? And Akpo absolutely ran his socks off as well as scoring the winner.

Delighted that Solly did well today, but he still isn't good enough for me. And we will suffer if he plays against a better winger than Bournemouth could offer ... or when the opposition hit a decent right wing cross to the far post.
  • [cite]Posted By: Dave Rudd[/cite]And Akpo absolutely ran his socks off as well as scoring the winner.

    Sssshhhh. Don't tell Large.

He won't want to know that!

    ;o)
  • OK, so he is small, and he is inexperienced.
    But
he is one of our youngsters, he has a decent footballing/decision making brain, he is tenacious, he is hard working and a good team guy, he has probably had to be twice as good as a bigger fella to be treated equally as he has made his way in the game.
I am not saying he is the greatest player ever, but pre-Francis, and post Richardson, I for one was not in despair regarding him.
I hope he plays so well throughout the season that Francis has to be top notch to win and sustain a place in the side.
  • reminds me very much as a player of alan wright, his size didn't do him too much harm, and i think solly has a bright future.

Exactly. Alan Wright had a successful top flight career as a left back and he was only about 5ft 4in! And Paul Parker didn't do too badly in his career either....
I think that Solly's lack of height being an issue is a load of bollocks. If you're good enough, you're big enough...unless you're playing basketball...
  • he will have harder games and will make mistakes but he has a lot more going for him than those on here that wrote him off imagined.

I really think he could be a more than decent RM as well as a RB.
  • Typical Charlton player from the ranks, proud to wear the shirt, gave everything he had and proved he's got something we've needed at Charlton for a while...

    Bollocks...!
  • Excellent match for Chris Solly- gave everything, very pleased for him. Tbh I always thought he was good player and it's now up to Simon Francis to fight him for the shirt and competition is great for the club.
  • Just been reading the handbook says he's 5ft 8. He walked past me at the seat cleaning and was one of only about 5 faces I recognised. Didn't really notice his height was kicking myself at the time that I didn't shake RM's hand just smiled and said hello.

Reid was excellent first half but faded second half and on at least 2 occasions was too greedy. I cannot recall Solly making any mistakes, and his performance was all the more impressive given Waggy didn't have the greatest game in front of him.

All about opinions though isn't it!

    Yes, it is.

I agree that Reid faded, but I thought his first half performance was good enough to make him my MoM.

I saw several 'mistakes' from Solly - mostly of the 'what he didn't do' category rather than misplaced passes or failed tackles. I haven't seen any match highlights, but didn't he commit the foul for the penalty that wasn't given?

Don't get me wrong. I'd love Solly to do well. I just think his lack of physique will hold him back. And those who find examples like Alan Wright and Paul Parker don't impress me. Find another couple of hundred like that and I'll concede that you have a point.
  • If he's 5'8" I'm a Dutchman. And I'm not. He's about 5'6"
  • Solly reminds me a lot of Richie Bowman, similar stature and appearance, when Bowman first played people were saying he was too small and skinny to play for us but he soon proved them wrong, he turned out to be a real firebrand and feared no-one, could play a bit too...

all depends on your definition of well. In mine no he didn't.

It might hold him back but how much? How far he goes will be down to how good the rest of his game becomes to make up for it.

No big list but there were several small players at the World Cup. Others mentioned are Lahm, Germany's captain and Rafael & Fabio at Man Utd. There are plenty of small players around and it's just a weakness like anything else. Messi is shorter and meant to be the best player in the world. I know that's an extreme example but what I'm trying to say it's about being good enough in other areas to make up for it.

I believe that was McCormack, but not 100% sure.

There was a handball by one of our players in the second half that I thought was much more of a pen than the McCormack challenge. We were pretty lucky not to give one away.

Looks like the jury is out on whether Solly's size is a problem. I guess he needs a prolonged run in the side for a conclusive argument to be made. He got targeted a bit last season when he played, but I'm not convinced that was due to his size.
  • It will always be a problem.
Bournemouth tried to use it to there advantage a few times. Some high balls came over, but somehow Solly still managed to get a head to it.

While it didnt seem to much of a problem against Bournemouth, I see him struggling against better teams.
  • I completely agree with you Scoham. There are so many quality small players, and yes their height can be at their disadvantage but the other attributes make up for it in their own game.

I think Solly was targeted last season because of his age not his size more than anything. He has just proved every doubters wrong by his performance yesterday, he showed strength, awareness, good tackling and never pulled out of a challange once.

For me his overall game for the full 90minutes gave him the man of the match, at points he was faultless. If we had a man of the match at HT then an overall one at FT then Reid would have got it for his first half display and Solly the FT MOM one. All in all, shows a lot of promise for the season to come for both players. I personally can't wait.
  • first start in his own position

Far too early to write him off.
