Your hopes and expectations for the season ahead - 2010/11

  • I hope we play modern passing football. Or at least try. I don't want to see the 'stone age' long hopeful ball up to the front expecting someone like Burton to 'get something on it'; sometimes last season I thought they were trying to set the world record for the number of attempted chest passes in one game.

I hope the signings turn out to be decent footballers with the right attitude. I have no idea about any of them (apart from Docherty) so can't say they are good signings at the moment.

In the last week of August, when a lot of clubs realise they have players in contract who have not managed to find another club or they have managed to sign better players, I think there will be a lot of good players available on season long loans. I hope we get 2 or 3 really good ones.

I hope Parky finally starts taking responsibility for the performances and does not try to imply that the problem is still with Pardew, or Pardew's players or the budget he has to work on. He takes the training, picks the team, selects the starting tactics for each match, adapts those tactics as required during each match and makes the substitutions. If we have another performance like we saw at the Den last season, which was 100% his fault as not only did he start with the wrong tactics but he failed to change those tactics after the first 15 minutes when it was clear things were going very badly, I hope he holds his hands up and accepts it was his fault rather than seemingly accept no responsibility and blame it all on the players.
  • I'm expecting the Play offs, Pawel will get 15+ but we need another 15+ from somewhere else, and a decent back up keeper.
  • I think we'll finish 5th or 6th so not having threatened automatic promotion but a decent position nonetheless.
That would be a successful season and then we'd just have to hope we get the rub of the green in the play-offs that arguably we didn't get last season.
  • Hope: automatic promotion

Expect: mid-table / just outside play-offs with the odd burst of optimism as we flatter to deceive before screwing up again.
  • I think we'll be very close to automatic but will end up in the play off's, although hopefully we'll be able to do better than last time. I really believe we'll be much stronger in attack and a few more decent acquisitions could see us really challenge although I'm a little concerned about our defence and would have liked to see Fortune sign.
  • I hope we stabilise the finances and start building again. It would be good to get to a position where we dont have to sell our best players and most promising youngsters just to stay afloat.

On the pitch I dont expect anything other than committed performances and the cliche of players giving 100% for the shirt.

Anything other than a relegation battle I would be happy with and anything other than that will be a bonus. Maybe a good run in the paint trophy for a morale boost and possible win at wembley.

No pressure on us for the first time in years other than to stay up so hopefully this will transcend to the players and manager and there will be a bit more unity between them and the fans than there has been in recent years.
  • Hope never abandons you; you abandon it.
  • It's the hope that kills you!
  • [cite]Posted By: Killarahales[/cite]I'm hoping that we play as well as last year, make the play-offs again, but this time, get to Wembley and win!

I'm hoping for as few injuries as possible as we're going to have a very good first eleven, but the back-up is thin.

I'm hoping that Kyle Reid lives up to expectations; he could be the best player in League 1 this season.

I'm hoping that Richard Murray stays an integral part of Charlton's future.

I'm hoping that Parky gets offered a new contract as that will mean things are going well.

Almost exactly this except I would tentatively add new / more investment to secure the future of the club

And rather than calling for the booing to stop I would like to call on ALL fans to be just a little more excepting about the way other fans choose to support our team.

Your way is not always their way, but we are all here and we all paid and we are all helping to ensure the clubs survival. If you don't like it please try to ignore it.

Peace and love between the rose-tinted and eternally pessimistic brigades.
  • Hoping for supporters and a team full of passion and pride for Charlton Athletic F.C.

Expecting supporters and a team full of passion and pride for Charlton Athletic F.C.

It's pretty much a new team this season. Please let us get behind EVERY player (not just your favourites) because this newly built team needs ALL OUR support... ALL!

  • I hope for financial stability or better still, a Charlton friendly takeover. I would love to see us promoted but I don't really believe it will happen. My greatest concerns centre on questions about why we dropped off so badly around Christmas last season and the seeming disaffection of too many players. Jonjo's comments worried me to be honest, were they accurate or did they merely reflect the chasm between League 1 and Prem? I had wondered just how good our coaching and fitness regimes were, and Jonjo's remarks somewhat fed into these concerns. Is there a man management problem? Why could other clubs get their players fighting for every ball and why couldn't we?
I'll just keep turning up and cheering but I would like a season of wholehearted vociferous support without having to cringe at the sounds of abuse and booing, and If the players give their all, I'll be happy.
  • Hope: Anything like last season, really enjoyed it (except the penalty shootout result). Would like promotion at the end of it this time obviously. Hoping to get to a lot more games this year being based in London and hopefully having a bit of cash if I can find a jobby! Few more away days especially!

Expect: The above, but with me having to fill in up front due to injuries.
  • you really don't want to know !!!
  • PROMOTION!

I'm hoping for some imagination and some creation, less of the long balls and hopeless crosses and more of a passing approach. I'm hoping the number 10 jersey is being reserved for a 20+ goal forward that will sign this week and put away a good percentage of those chances and make himself a hero as see Abbott as a direct replacement for Burton (around the 10 goal mark) and Akpo / Tuna will come off the bench.

I would take 6th now but if we can get that striker then we could push higher.
  • Hi Charlton fans, I have done a preview of the upcoming season here: http://posh.footballblog.co.uk/theopposition-leaguene-season-preview-part-two.html

I'm sure you will disagree with what I think Charlton's chances are but it would be great if you could take a look at the blog and express your views on how you think Charlton will do.

Anyway, best of luck this season apart from when you play Posh of course ;)
  • Oh, I forgot to add that I want a trip to Wembley so we'll have to reach either the playoff final or the JPT final.
  • Hope: Promotion

Expect: the unexpected, a rollercoaster, a new Lloyd Sam, a new Dave Mooney.

Dread: we continue with the relegation every 2 seasons pattern. Or administration.

You forgot to include new star winger, Kyel Reid in your incoming transfers.
He tore the Watford defence to shreds in last Saturday's friendly.

He was on loan last season, then went back to Sheff Utd; signed permantly a couple of weeks ago.
  • I hope we don't end up trying to draw our way to promotion like last season!

I actually think we'll start the season with a better (stronger) first 11 than last season, all depends on injuries/suspensions and how Parky plays the loan market when needed.

If we can get those 4 signings and they are the right players I think we should be able to make the play-offs. From there as they say it's a lottery.

I think that's a realistic expectation. Wasn't looking good when Richardson suddenly left, but the team is nothing like some predicted with 4/5 young players starting. Wagstaff appears to be the only one, with Mambo probably in the match day squad a fair bit.

Anything more would be a fantastic season, anything less would be disappointing. Compared to last season we at least have a more balanced squad assuming we eventually make the signings in the positions we need. Whether it's as strong or not we'll see. Easy to forget this time last year we had 5 CMs, no left winger and Burton was our only decent striker. Loans will be required at some point I'd imagine.

Southampton are expected to win the league, so although I put them down as the winners in the other thread, I think someone else probably will. No idea who. An unexpected team will probably make the play-offs, bit like Swindon perhaps last season who seemed to appear from nowhere.

Sorry about that. It's all updated now.

Well, the team may gel and get results. We've seen Blackpool, Fulham etc all achieve this so it's always a possibility. But ON PAPER it does look a little weaker, from my point of view.

On paper, you may well be right, Mr Posh ........ compared to the fact we've had to sell/release some of our best players for finance reasons. However, if you had seen our team last season, you'd seen that despite finishing 4th it lacked balance.

Down here at Charlton, we've all been a bit worried at how threadbare the squad has been. But during the last 3 weeks or so, one by one the squad has been added to, and each one of the new players has come with a decent reputation, including 2 from promoted sides and another Player of the Year at his previous club. Out own PotY Christian Dailly has now re-signed, and despite his age is pure quality.

The squad is still short of 4 players according to our manager, but he's been proven to be a good judge of player so we're reasonably confident he will get his four - and they'll be the right type of player to complete the squad. If not, then Parky will have to bring in a long term loan player - he's done that to good effect before.

But already the likely starting team is looking more balanced and cohesive than last season.
So we live in hope .....!
  • Hope - automatic promotion. I'd take the playoffs (but would prefer to avoid them), although I think if we finish there this time round, we'll win them.
Expect - well parky/muzza keeps mentioning that we are trying to get a competitive team together, so, as always, I expect them to compete in every game! I also expect them not to let sides 'enjoy playing' at the Valley (i.e like we're their 'cup final')
[cite]Posted By: oohaahmortimer[/cite]dread/fear reid , jackson and docherty not being as good as we hoped they are
Agree. Re. jackson and (particularly) reid - there's impressing during loan spells and then there's trying to match that in the following full season. I hope they're all a success though.
  • No Norwich, Millwall or Leeds this season, on paper this division looks weaker.

Realistically we should finish in the top six, but we need to finish off the squad re-building first. If we can get a loanee in or two to plug the gaps in the squad this could be our year.

I hope our fans are a little more patient...
  • McCormack for Bailey
    Wagstaff for Sam
    Francis for Richardson

Based on the above I cant see how our first XI is going to be anywhere near as strong.

Abbott for Burton looks pretty like for like but until we sign another striker, a first XI keeper and preferably a right sided midfielder I cant see us being top 6 as things stand.

Might be different at the end of August though if we can get those players in.
  • [cite]Posted By: Southendaddick[/cite]a first XI keeper

    That'll be Elliot.
