  • Who's Debs?!
  • Will the podcast have a RSS feed? Some of us hate iTunes!

WSS, I'll lend you the dvd of Debbie's trip to Texas.
  • I am not overly technical, but from what I have learnt so far there will be an RSS feed, as soon as I have it all worked out I will post info on here, as well as itunes I cannot see a problem in posting a link to the MP3 on this forum as long as our hosts are ok with that, as BDL said we will take the two hour show and condense it down to a 15 -20 minute highlights of the show package, not 100% sure if it will contain match commentary though as there may be copyright issues.
  • I, personally, haven't subscribed to Player. I believe that buying a season ticket, programs and replica shirts is enough outlay. As I go to all the home games and a few away and I don't want to spend my Saturday afternoons listening to rubbish commentary for the remaining games, there is little worth subscribing for - in my view.

I'm in the camp that believe that if you support the club in the summer (or March this year) by paying for a whole year in advance these type of services should be available for no further outlay.

Having an 'Independent' show only available to subscribers seems a little wrong to me. Either way I'll not be subscribing and unless the numbers increase or the club make it available for free I suspect there will be little interest from supporters making it a fans' show. It's a subscribers' show.

Fair enough. I don't subscribe either.

Enough people said they weren't happy with the commentary last season and that has changed with Terry Smith, who is a fan and experienced broadcaster, doing it I believe.

Enough people said there wasn't enough good content to make it worth while so the club have added a new element to the service in Charlton Live.

Ultimately if Charlton Live and all the rest of CAFC Player are attractive people will buy it, it not they won't but either way it's not going to come for free so might as well forget about that now.
  • I have just this minute signed up. Just got to remember now to leave the pub on a sunday evening to listen!
  • I didn't realise they had replaced the commentator from last season. That is good news.
  • With regard to Charlton Life, this has been set up by supporters, the Club have not paid anything towards our studio set up costs, the team have set up the studio themselves, and do not get paid by the club or anyone, we merely use the CATV Player as a vehicle to broadcast, since Time FM went there has been nowhere else that we could launch Charlton Live from, believe me BDL has exhausted every possible avenue to get Charlton Live to as many people as possible.

The Club has no editorial control, but they have been extremely helpful in setting this up, and allow us to use the Valley. It may seem wrong to some, for us to have an 'independent' show only available on a subscription service, but that really is the only way we are able to provide this service, without using CATV as a platform the costs would be beyond us. We are hoping to launch a podcast of the shows highlight very soon which will be available trhough ITunes and an RSS Feed.

If not then he blagged a great view just in front of us in the gantry for the Bournemouth game : - )

  • Terry is providing commentary for the video, BBC London are providing commentary for the web, if they do not Charlton Live will step in and do it.
  • Yes in the perfect world I would like it to be free as well, but the reality is this is probably the only solution that is possible and viable.

I do not subscribe at present , but intend doing so in the next few days!. If Terry is doing the commentary that has to be a vast improvement on what was deliverd over the past two seasons to me and I guess the majority of fans on
BBC London that listerned to the commentary.

It is good to see this programme back, and run by people who support the club, and have a good knowledge of it!, that relate's to the ordinary fan. In many ways like this website, it is good to see 'fans' doing something for the club and other supporters, instead of just sitting back and moaning, or viewing everything as what can we do as fan's!

Use it or loose it people.........

My question is about sustainability , i understand everything has a cost , but what if i paid £34.99 and 6 months later , enough people hadn't subscribed , or for whatever reason it was pulled , i would feel a tad gutted , if it was free , i would be gutted but not financially gutted , is that a fair point?
Im not trying to be a miserable old got ( well may not miserable bit!) but having bought 4 season tickets , replica shirts home and away , jackpot tickets £1 halftime , as well as a programme and refreshments , as well as xmas pressies from the club shop , you do tend to feel a tad strung out!

Fair point on the fact it might get pulled.. I would assume that for this season at least the club would feel honour bound to continue with this,! but it is a consideration......

In times like these, and the financial outlay you have made perhaps only you can make that commitment on an individual basis.

With the way that technology is going, in time the club may think that to deliver it's messages to it's customers that this is a marketing medium to support, a case of let's see how it goes I assume.
  • You're banging your head off a brick wall when it comes to the cost of iPlayer, the price is set by FLi whose only interest is making money...

Fair play or a decent service doesn't really enter into it, we've all found that out in recent seasons...

It's a pity that Charlton Live have to get into bed with them but if that's the way it is, then that's the way it is I'm afraid...
  • I should be able to. Wonder if my desire can help
  • Ha, when whispers go wrong - probably not is the answer - can you plug into a laptop or is there a spare receiver????
  • Right - I fully understand the politics of this and why some people are not happy with CL being exclusive to Player.

I looked at so many ways to bring back Charlton Live, we could have recorded it and put it out on a podcast, we could have tried a webcast of our own, simple problem was money/resources. To stream it ourself we'd have needed a lot of money up front, we simply didn't have that.

Radio wasn't an option either, nobody was interested, I was told it was too niche. The other problem is lack of broadcaster in the SE London area, there isn't one since it all went bottom up at Time FM.

Using the player service was the best option, most probably our only option. We were guaranteed that the club would provide access to players, officials etc. It also meant that we could help the club add the value so desperately needed to the Player service. There has been absolutely no interference with content, look at Your Views on the OS - how many other clubs would publish some of the stuff that's been on there?

I know that Matt Wright has worked his cojones off to improve the player service so that fans get the commentary that was so desperately needed, but also get added content to make the £3.99 monthly subscription even better value. When BBC London aren't able to provide a pundit, i'm sure a familiar/biased voice will be heard.

As Pete said earlier, we are working hard to get the podcast working, we are working hard to make the show something that you want to listen to. We have some interesting plans, which we know you will enjoy hearing when they come to fruition.

The boys will be outside the ground tomorrow, before and after the match. We want your views, your stories. It's nightmare journeys to away grounds this week.

I hope that you will join us live from the Valley from 7pm on Sunday.

Thanks for the explano BDL I know your hearts in the right place , make sure you give it plenty of gusto with the matchday mike , l love it when you get going , it gets the fans up for it! Well done mate
  • In my view, as someone who both subscribes and listens, that the show just needs support, it will grow from strength to strength.

If possible, whack out the full 2 hours on iTunes, please.

My only real criticism is the uneccesary 10/15 audio match highlights and interviews given air time. A one hour podcast filled with the presenters discussing topics and reacting to email, tweets and phone calls is the way forward.

    Keep up the great work.

Yep, point taken on highlights, we're trying to get them down in length. It's still important to have something as a point of reference. (edited - Bloody predictive text!)
  • With regards the club's commitment to CAFC Player, this is absolute.

Now the club has signed up to FLI, there is no way that CAFC Player will not be around in six months' time, so I hope that provides some reassurance on the subscription front.

From a club perspective, we intend to give the Charlton Live team as much support as possible without interfering with how they want to do things.

Oh, and there might be a familiar voice summarising on CAFC Player/BBC Radio Kent today...

  • I have found this years player ten times better than last years.
Well worth a quid a week.
Only thing is would like to be able to download the show on to the laptop so I can put it on my phone to listen to.

Apart from that, keep up the good work
  • @RedZed333 - We're trying very hard this season to ensure that the price FLi sets is value for money.

Charlton Live (both the live broadcast and catch-up recorded version), extended highlights of every home fame with live commentary, the complete 90 minutes of every home game with live commentary and the Addicks FM pieces have been introduced as extra regular features, and there have also been more regular video/audio interviews with players/officials etc.

This can still be improved further, and we're working on it and are working out ways to devote more resources to it.

Furthermore, it's worth stating now that when the website switches over to FLi, all audio interviews/coverage (such as the post-match press conferences and pre-match media meetings with Phil Parkinson) the club currently provides free of charge in the audio archive section will only be available on CAFC Player.

  • Living up north, as I do, I suppose paying £35 a season for 46 match commentaries is good really, you just need to up the game on other stuff...

But, as you say, things can only get better and I'm sure they will..

Matt CAFCPlayer does not seem to work today ???
  • So basically what you're saying is that as soon as the FLi site goes live you're going to withdraw all decent features from those of us that pay hundreds of pounds a year on season tickets, shirts, programs, Valley Gold etc. and offer it to those that potentially have none of the above but pay £4 a month instead?
  • Dont waste your time the volume is so bad i used headphones with sound on max and still struggled to hear?
  • Charlton Live on now, but it is very quiet.

I hate this FLi site idea, and while I understand the pros for the club financially - it is a disgrace.
  • It was the same last week, i like the show, the effort, the people, but you have to be able to hear, i wonder if they have a 'master' volume knob to turn up....or maybe they need to get advice from spinal tap and have a facility that goes to 11.
