So easy for the likes of "Ooh-ah", isn't it? Slate a manager who's spent almost his entire time here undoing the damage inflicted by his predecessor, without suggesting a better realistic strategy. To describe last season simply as failure is patently nonsense. As Mascot observed, seeing a limited but hard-working bunch of players give it their best shot and come v close to promotion was far more enjoyable than watching Marcus Bent pretend to be injured against the likes of Man. Utd, but then there's no reflected glory in that is there?
Am I missing something? Do we have a divine right to play our football in the top two divisions? A club the size of Leeds has just about squeezed back there after several years away but we're expected somehow just to breeze through a limited but highly competitive league whilst selling enough talent to ensure the future of the club.
So, because the vast majority try to see a REALISTIC picture, and enjoy it for what it's worth, we are accused of looking through rose-tinted glasses etc., despite making the occasional criticisms we feel are merited. Reasoned argument is always welcomed - we all do it in the pub on match days - but the constant irrational moaning without sensible suggestions for alternatives is just becoming tiresome.
if people think that our abysmal attempt, after parky took over, to stay up in the championship was ok then no wonder you're all happy about where we are now
billy davies was a suggestion at the time and anyone with any clue knows that we missed that opportunity that any new manager would have given us some fresh impetus and maybe kept us up
i know we have no divine right to be in any league but i clearly prefer it when we're mixing it with the big boys and you might not
give me a win at arsenal or whoever in the top flight over a dogged well earned battled win over orient ...
and our regular prem players were a hard working bunch
and yep i would prefer to watch darren bent rather than akpo but thats the charlton i want(even if we have to put up with the reflected glory of england interrnationals, god forbid) and it maybe not the charlton some want or can relate to ....
i don't mind that people look at it and enjoy it for what it's worth , even though i think it's cloud cuckoo land that people are living in
and if i choose to look at it thru pessimistic/black glasses ,in what are clearly the worse footballing times our club have fallen into so relatively close to the good times , then surely i'm entitled to
i think the charlton board may consider last season as failure
and here is my reasoned argument
[cite]Posted By: oohaahmortimer[/cite]I think the reason everyone thought mid table last year was due to the fact no one expected the board to dig so deep and find the money to keep the likes of bailey, semedo, shelvey and co
Then the continued backing to find the huge wage budget(for league 1) to get in dailly and then the further backing to get in reid , forster & co , they didn't play for free
On the backing parky received there promotion was nearly achieved but nearly isn't enough
I go to watch my team. I don't really care who we're playing, as long as we win or at least try our best to do so.
I enjoyed it when we had Benty knocking them in for fun and I enjoyed us beating Arsenal at Highbury. I also enjoyed us beating MK Dons 5-2 last season. I'm looking forward to Saturday and I'm not going to be miserable because we're playing Bournemouth not Birmingham. It comes with the territory.
Billy Davies was the potential Curbs replacement, not Pardew's - you're about a season out.
Do you seriosly think most of us don't prefer to see us beat Arsenal than Orient? We're just a bit more realistic about hoe often it can happen.
Who mentioned Darren Bent? Don't recall his namesake being hard-working or playing for England; just how angry I was that he was taking home the money I put through the turnstile.
Fair enough - the Board backed Parky the best they could without jeopardising our future, but those funds were generated in part by trimming an already under par squad.
Other than by employing Billy Davies I'm just curious to know how you'd have handled it all so much better with the same "huge" League One budget. Which actual decisions has he got so wrong that you and a handful of others can see while most of us miss them?
I think Parky has slowly turned things around but the bottom line last seasons target was Promotion, we were not promoted so it is a failure. Think we are arresting the slide now though, another strong season & promotion bid is the minimum we should as a club expect. CAFC is NOT a Third tier club.
I think Parky has grown into the job. Lets face it he was handled a poison chalice. We all knew thing were going t**s up under Pardew and he could not stem the tide. I'm not convinced he had much imput under SAP.
As for Billy Davis He was offered the job, agrred terms then changed his mind hence we ended up with Dowie then Reed and Pardew
Difficult to disagree with that Ketman but I think it was (and still is) a massive task. There have of course been times when I've questioned his management like just about everyone else but I think we may have under-estimated the extent of the necessary turnaround. That "cancer" of the losing mentality had clearly spread and takes some shifting.
paddy7 i would have dropped elliot earlier
parky got very lucky with that injury forcing the change and the improvement under randy was there for all to see
the lack of use of jonjo , who was rightfully rested /dropped at the time he was but wrongfully not reinstated was another mistake imo
and playing reid on the right at millwall and chucking solly into the lions den were other mistakes
yep parky did reasonable last year but i'm not happy with reasonable
if he gets this mob up this season then it will be cap doughing time
billy davies was available when parky took over the reigns btw
Fair enough. I actually agree re. Jonjo, and Randolph came in and did a good job at the right time. As I've said elsewhere I reckon the positives outweight the negs but they're fair points you raise. Let's just try to be positive from the k.o. and see where it gets us - we all want the same thing.
I agree with you. Bloody well said, mate. And Oggy too, but I always agree with Oggy :-)
The one thing I agree with Oohaah about is his remark about JonJo, but I am not sure he or anyone else here has the full story on that. And the fact is we had some muppets who booed him. We have always had booers/muppets, but I dont remember them booing the most talented player in the team before. We now seem to have some real Third Division muppets, and i wish they'd do one.

Bullsh*t ... Id escort every booer out the ground and ban them for life...
Not wanted, end of... they need to get some backbone and take what supporting Charlton is on the chin.. IMHO
