Who gets the right back shirt?

Solly in possession but he has been lacking against non-league opposition and is rather small for set pieces. Alternatives are Mambo, Jenkinson and Cousins or does Parky get someone in, using valuable striker funds? My personal choice is Mambo, blooding potential centre-halves has worked for us in the past (Dailly can't go on forever) and he seems a reasonable athlete, reports have him doing a good job against Kettering. He'd be a frightening sight for opponents when he gets forward.

  • While Mambo was good in a short cameo when the game was effectively over can't agree that Solly has "been lacking".

I would still expect another right sided player to come in either as first choice or cover.

I think Solly could well play RM.
  • irrespective of whether Solly plays 1st game or not we still need to get in another right-back as back-up/competition for Chris and let them fight it out between them. IMO if Solly isn't ready then Jenkinson definately isn't. Mambo isn't a RB and Cousins isn't ready either.
  • I think there is no doubt that Parky is looking to strengthen the right hand side of the team. We have lost both Richardson and Lloyd Sam over the summer, and whilst Solly and Wagstaff have both showed promise, I would feel slightly uncomfortable with them being our first choice right back/wing combo.
  • What's happened to Simon Francis at Southend?

Did he go to the Spanners?

    gone nowhere, yet.
  • If we don't get anyone in before the start of the season, then I'd go with Semedo at right-back. Get the impression Parky wasn't expecting Richardson to be sold, so of all the holes in the squad we have to plug, this one may take a little longer.

Solly was done at least three or four times by the AFCW winger, I wasn't at Kettering but on another thread a report said similar. I'm not saying he's not ready but I don't think he is good enough. Didn't Rufus, Steve Brown and Les Berry all start at right back? As cover on the right, James Mulley would seem a decent bet, will only get better with full-time football.
  • I disagree with large I thought Mambo was fantastic at right back for us on saturday!Hes more agile than you think for his stature. He also brings extra height to the side for set pieces both attacking and defensively. Mambo gets the nod for me!Although Jenkinson looked equally comfortable too!Solly is just to small!
  • Would like to see Parky bring someone in, unsure if Solly is ready for regular week in week out league 1 football. Also if he was to get injured or suffer a loss in form, then we would need to bring someone in on loan anyway. I know it was at left back, but when we played Bristol Rovers and Milwall, Solly was targeted as a weakness by the opposition and I think this would again be the case and at the current time, I am unsure if Solly will be able to cope.
  • To be fair to Solly in those situations Dan he was thrown in on the left hand side which is not his preferred position!

  • Gotta be someone new imo

All true but that was about 20 mins against a non-league side. Promising but dangerous to read too much into it.

Jenkinson looked equally good v Kettering IMHO but neither we're put under any real pressure.
  • Mambo isn't a right back, can't judge properly there in a pre-season friendly. He played centre back for Welling and I'm sure he mainly did for Staines as well. Solly and Jenkinson would surely offer more in attack than Mambo, though of course his height and strength can be useful.

I'm sure we'll get someone in, though it'll be interesting to see if they're competition for Solly, or clearly more experienced and given the place from the start.

Solly would make mistakes, any of the young players would, but at times I think he could surprise some people. He's not big but he has more aggression about him than you might expect. He could really benefit from a run of games, he's mainly played left back in the first team and has never gone out on loan.
  • i like the pace Solly has to offer and his ability to get forward. However , Solly is not strong or experienced enough to be our first choice Right Back. Id like to see Mambo play RB then Solly as a cover for Mambo.
  • can't say solly doesnt have experience but then choose Mambo.

Sorry but basing far too much on 20 mins in a friendly
  • What did Mambo do in those 20 minutes? Was it just solid defending or did he offer something going forward?
  • I really rate solly and I think park does too. I think one or 2 of you might be pleasantly surprised how good he isu
  • agree superclive
  • Solly shows promise but almost every game I've seen him in it takes him too long to settle into the game. Seems like a slow starter to me, though once he's got the pace of the game, he seems quite capable.

I think we need an experienced RB with Solly as cover.
  • I wonder what the manager thinks ......?

But if he takes time to settle into a game, then he won't be much use as cover (only coming on for a few minutes).

I like Solly. Agree with superclive.

agree entirely. Everyone seems to base their opinions on the games he played a LB which isn't fair to him. He's better than a lot of people give him credit for.
  • I think Solly will do very well and dont think lack of height is a real issue for a full back
  • Uncle just look at the twins at man yooooooo they're both about solly's height and for that reason I'm happy enough.
  • Bet they dont have your pace though Daz do they? ;-) how you doing mate you ok?

LOL ...... poor old Dazzler, you'll never live it down!

    ;o)
  • Solly will be fine, as a young full back who will have some bigger boys to look after him at some of the northern holes we have to attend next season too.

He isn't scared of his own shadow which is the impression I always got from Sankofa and Moutakil and enjoys a tackle, besodes that full back is a position you grow into and playing alongside two of the higher-calibre centre-halves of this level will only help him.

Mark Reid wasn't exactly a giant, & he was a full back of great & understated quality. He was a solid physical presence when required, & very much held his own against bigger players. As a bonus, he was also a highly adept penalty taker.

If Solly packs on a bit more muscle, he could be a very good full back, irrespective of his height.
  • It also depends on who plays in front of the full back.

Last year we had Sam giving Richardson good cover and support - and Semedo just inside.

If Solly starts, at the moment we've got Waggy RM, who's a bit lightweight but a grafter and keen to learn.
And hopefully, Semedo will still be in place to give inside cover.

I feel Solly is worth his chance playing for once in his own specialist position.
At this point as the season begins, we can afford the risk for a handful of games to see if he can step up.
  • I don't recall Phil Warman being over-endowed in the height department either, but he did a job at this level.
